Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted April 24, 2019 Posted April 24, 2019 1. Eff him2. He sucks and is hard to watch3. The Brewers deserve him, being bastards themselves
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted April 24, 2019 Posted April 24, 2019 The assumption is that he'd automatically be an upgrade for the rotation but that's hardly a given. Gonzalez has had the better career than Vargas but not necessarily the better recent track record. 2nd half of last year comparison:GG: 13 starts; 69.3 IP; 67 Hits; 38 ER; 32 BB; 54 K; 4.83 ERA; 1.43 WHIPJV: 11 starts; 54.3 IP; 45 Hits; 23 ER; 16 BB; 52 K; 3.81 ERA; 1.12Vargas's start to this year has been lousy but so has Gio's and his was at AAAVargas is older but Gonzalez has about as much wear on his tires. And, yeah, he's slow and annoying to watch and often into his 80th pitch w/one out in the 4th inning so won't be doing the bullpen much good either.
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted April 24, 2019 Posted April 24, 2019 depending on which projection systems you believe, he's expected to be anywhere from on par to about 1 fWAR better than Vargas. I mean, he's probably better. But he's not "no need to worry about that 5th spot now" better.
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted April 24, 2019 Posted April 24, 2019 Gio isnt far off from Vargas, i would be thrilled to have the depth but he isn't Keuchel. Come on Mets. Sign Keuchel. Sign Kimbrel. Win WS.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted April 24, 2019 Posted April 24, 2019 I think the thought about Keuchel/Kimbrel is that it's only six or so weeks until the draft at this point and that teams are willing to wait until after that passes at which point compensation picks would go away.

Sign Keuchel now while others are unwilling.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted April 25, 2019 Posted April 25, 2019 Would Keuchel have made those stops at second that Canó totally fudged yesterday?

He might not even be good, especially given the layoff.Oh and also, doing things that 29 other teams seem to think is a bad idea is usually something the Mets get killed for.
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted April 25, 2019 Posted April 25, 2019 But in a month he has 5 other suitors and you may not get him at all. What do you do until he is ready? Vargas. But that is the same question you would need to answer if you wait a month. One way to ENSURE you suck forever is to only try things that the other teams are doing. Innovate!

Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted April 25, 2019 Posted April 25, 2019 I wouldn;t doubt we Omar-up the first round and pick a college guy with a trick pitch who will be in the big-league bullpen in 5 weeks
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted April 25, 2019 Posted April 25, 2019 One way to ENSURE you suck forever is to only try things that the other teams are doing. Innovate!they're in first place. They won't stay there by resting on it.They might. Steamer still somehow projects Keuchel for about 2.3 fWAR in 145 IP. Fangraphs projected standings are Nats 89Mets 85Phillies 84Braves 83.Assuming that extremely optimistic take on Keuchel's volume if not his ability, 2-2.5 wins barely moves the needle. Dan Sabo%%rski... the ZiPS guy, projected Gio might give the Mets an additional 6% of making the playoffs. Keuchel is projected a little better than that, so maybe 7 or 8? Thats a nice bump for little expenditure (depending how many additional possibly bad years you ahve to take Dallas for), but an estimate of a slight bump in playoff odds (that are already reasonably high) is not exactly "BETTER DO THIS OR ELSE"
