Here's where we are at the close of the third round. We're down to eight contenders, four from the Daily News and two each from Newsday and the New York Post.



Voting will resume after the New Year with the following matchups:

The Tabloid Cover Derby will resume tomorrow. This will begin the fourth round, in which the eight surviving covers will be reduced to the prestigious Final Four. We'll have polls posted on Thursday and Friday, then we'll take a break for the weekend, and then the remaining polls from this round will be posted on Monday and Tuesday.

The Friday and Monday polls seem to be a bit harder to predict than those on Thursday and Tuesday. We'll see what happens!

I would never have guessed that deGrom would not make the final 8, or that a cover like "Rainin" would.



I guess it just goes to show you that the old proverb still rings true.

Fate (and math) gave IT'S RAININ' METS and MIDNIGHT BADNESS a series of weak opponents. I would be surprised if their luck continued.

Today's poll is the last one until next week, when we'll have two polls that will determine our finalists.

I'm looking at the bracket, and I realize Smile High and Wright face off the next round.



Which means either Sweep Snakes or Badness will make the finals.

No, you're misreading it. It will be WRIGHT vs BADNESS and SMILE vs SNAKES.

Oh, I see now.



In that case, I think the semis will be a formality, and the faceoff will come in the finals.

I agree. It's likely that it will come down to WRIGHT vs SMILE.



Here's the updated bracket, a bit premature since IT'S RAININ' METS is technically still alive, but SMILE HIGH has a commanding lead in the poll that ends tomorrow.
