He has a QO, which means that the Mets would lose a draft pick, which means less trade fodder for aging highly-paid veterans.

As I tried to state yesterday, it's "win now" time right now. There will plenty of other draft picks and toolsy 19 year olds out there after the "deGrom window" has closed.

We need a solid major league catcher now. To heck with the draft pick.

He was better against RHP than against lefties last year. Don’t know if that’s just last year or career wise.

That may be a consideration.

I'm not too concerned about the draft pick. He looks like he'd be a good guy to get if they can keep it to a three-year contract.

It's typical. Career-wise, he gets on base at a slightly higher rate against lefties (.351-.338), but comparatively hammers righties (.459 SLG vs. .378).

FWIW, his defense has also been generally well-regarded. I almost like that he struggled in the playoffs, provided it doesn't affect him too much mentally-- it'll drop the price a bit.

True, but the Mets just frittered away last years #6 pick, so I'm not about to let myself get too attached to this year's #9 pick.

But that's not the pick they'd lose.
There are various 'tiers' of draft pick forfeiture for signing a player who rejects his team's QO but the highest 1st round pick in a year is exempt in all cases.
It's been complicated by recent compromises in the CBA and is all explained here, but it looks like this is the one most likely to apply to the Mets:
-- a team that neither exceeded the luxury tax in the preceding season nor receives revenue sharing will lose its second-highest selection in the following year's Draft, as well
as $500,000 from its international bonus pool for the upcoming signing period. If it signs two such players, it will also forfeit its third-highest remaining pick and an additional $500,000

So, depending on how many supplemental picks between rounds 1 and 2 there are, we're probably looking at losing choice #45-50 or so for signing a QO player.

Do you acquiesce to giving up two draft picks? Or do you stay away from Pollock and sign Gonzalez or Jones instead?

I doubt that this Brodie administration is going to fret too much over losing draft picks.

And with this, you have at least a partial answer as to why they are pushing so hard for Realmuto. I think that BVW wants to be strong defensively up the middle. Realmuto, Cano, Rosario, and Pollock would accomplish that. Grandal in place of Realmuto would as well, but the cost as described above would be too high if you were to sign two guys who are yoked with qualifying offers.
