And so it continues.

Scott Boras’ annual assessment of the Mets’ spending habits — a tradition like no other at the general managers’ meetings — brought the team’s owner and a discount retail chain together under one umbrella on Wednesday.

“Frankly, like always, the Mets will shop at Fred’s,” the mega-agent said.

Asked what was for sale at the store, Boras said: “It’s not what’s for sale, it’s where a man [Fred Wilpon] who wants to win, wants to win and he has the wherewithal to do it.”

I get the first part, Mets are cheap, bla blah blah. I don't think I understand the second part.

I don't know that this means a heck of a lot, but I hope the two sides can repair this relationship before Michael Conforto's status becomes an issue.

I don't think they were shopping at Fred's when they signed the Cespedes contract.

I get that he's trying to get bigger contracts for his players. "You say you're not cheap? Prove it! Sign my players for what we say they're worth."

The media loves these quotes. It's great content. When we get a little closer he can count on them to drum up a lot of extra specific talk about his player.

The Mets should be making Cespedes like free agent signings all the time instead of once every 15 years. It's an embarrassment. It'd be one thing if the Mets had even a modicum of success with their approach but two first place finishes in 30 seasons ..... I suppose later tomorrow, you'll write that we have terrific gun laws because, hey, there wasn't a mass shooting on that day. Great! The Mets signed Cespedes. I guess that compensates for all the other years, when the Mets shop at Fred's.

Does he have a client this year that the Mets might be in on? I doubt that he's trying to goad them into signing Bryce Harper...

I think at the high end of the market, there are very few suitors. Only a handful of clubs can afford to take on this sort of commitment. Out of that handful, some will not have a need (like the Yankees, as currently constructed).

I think it benefits him to have all possible big market teams in the discussion, as it creates leverage and allows him to create a market for his player. I think it frustrates him that the Mets should absolutely be among this handful of teams, but are not.

They should be right at the fucking top. Right there with the Dodgers and Yankess. Every fucking season ferchrissakes. Give me a fucking break already with but the Mets signed a big one every 15 years or so.

I've been through this act too many times. Tell me if you've heard this before.

*Undisputed fact: Mets don't spend like other big market teams

*Newsworthy Item: Boras renews his criticism of Mets for not spending like big market teams.

*41Forever: Cites to isolated incident suggesting that the Mets do, in fact, spend like a big market team, even though anyone with a brain knows this is not true, and it wasn't even what the thread was about.

*CF: Gets angry that 41F would offer intentionally misleading information. Accuses 41F of being a shill for the Wilpons.

*41F: Refuses to acknowledge that he likes the Wilpons, continues to feign neutrality, says his only experience with the Wilpons was a pleasant conversation in some elevator or something.

*CF: Loses his mind. Can't believe anyone would buy that garbage. Asks 41F why, if he is so quick to defend their actions, he won't just come out and say he likes the Wilpons. Accuses 41F of dishonesty. Uses bad words.

*41F: Asks CF to stop using bad words. Asks why he makes personal attacks. Brings up M. Donald Grant.

Scene.

It wasn't in an elevator, it was in the stands at Dodgertown in Vero Beach. He was, in fact, pleasant. So was Nelson Doubleday. I met Glenn Close in the Shea elevator before one of the Subway Series games in 2008. She was pleasant, and shorter than what you might think.

I miss Dodgertown. What an amazing place that was to see a game. I loved how there were no dugouts, just benches separated from fans by just a short chained-link fence.

I'm not sure if he even likes the Wilpons. He defends the Wilpons, I think, because they own the Mets, not because he has any honest insights. He's a zombie and he'd shill for Adolf Hitler if Hitler owned the Mets.

I used to get mad at Boras and think he's bad for baseball and all. I mean, he probably is on some levels but I've begun to get a kick out of his zinging the Mets.

Fred's btw is a Memphis-based discount chain that's something of a combination of Rite Aid and Dollar General, and doing very badly as business.

I find his silly analogies zany and amusing (though this one probably misses the mark since few in the NY area probably know what Fred's is) there's just a squeaky wheel aspect to them that bothers me a bit. Thought it does make me look at the Nationals roster and laugh sometimes.
