Mex17 Old-Timey Member Posted November 5, 2018 Posted November 5, 2018 Could be the perfect in-between candidate. He can start while Cespedes is still out and the head to the bench as a veteran presence when and if Cespedes comes back. Won't cost a ton. HR's took a little dip last year but he still hit .281. Still was able to start over 100 games in CF. Going into age 33/34 season, which means he still has a few years left.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted November 5, 2018 Posted November 5, 2018 He started in center, but for a disastrously bad team. He also has a lousy walk rate.As a bench player, they can certainly do worse, but if he was a Met, I wouldn't be giving him regular time even before Céspedes returns.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted November 5, 2018 Posted November 5, 2018 doubt also that he'd be ready to sign on as a reserve, already rejected an offer to go in a trade over the summer.I'd suspect he'll stay in Baltimore, but who knows. Not a priority get.
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted November 5, 2018 Posted November 5, 2018 Has not been a good defensive centerfielder for a while, and wasn't even good at the corners last year. Might not be able to do better than an OPS in the low 7s at this point. He's rapidly approaching the Bautista/Austin Jackson category at this point.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted November 5, 2018 Posted November 5, 2018 Assuming the starting OF is Conforto-Nimmo-Bruce, then we already have our 4th outfielder in Lagares. Smith becomes OF #5 once Alonso is called up.If Cespedes comes back then he's in the mix as well. I think there is room for another OF with expected injuries etc., but I don't know if we can afford someone as high profile as Adam Jones.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted November 5, 2018 Posted November 5, 2018 Smiff may be the #5 outfielder already, depending on the status of Wilmer Flores.
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted November 5, 2018 Posted November 5, 2018 DOES it make sense to talk about Adam Jones? He catch in his spare time?
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted November 5, 2018 Posted November 5, 2018 If I'm going to add an OF I'd want it to be someone who can REALLY play CF.We've already got a multitude of corner guys who can fake it there for short periods, but none, aside from Juan L., who you'd trust there on a regular basis.

It would be nice if we can add enough righthanded offense in other spots so that we can carry him lower in the order and keep his glove in there regularly (particularly in his $9 million season).

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2018 Posted December 14, 2018 I can't see adding an OF -- not a starter anyway -- unless you're nabbing someone who'll be a plus-glove CF which the now 33 y/o Jones once was (he won GGs in 2009 and in 2012-14) but isn't anymore. And it doesn't help that his only two seasons of 800+ OPS came back in 2012 & 13, or that 2018 was his worst hitting season since he was 22 y/o and in his first full season a decade ago.As a 4th OF/reserve/injury insurance? ... Sure, maybe.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2018 Posted December 14, 2018 What’s the point?Doesn’t hit .300. Doesn’t walk. Now only has middling power while playing in a bandbox. Old. Bad fielder. Pass.
Mex17 Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2018 Author Posted December 15, 2018 To be fair here, I think that he is the third option behind Pollock and Gonzalez.I also think that he would be slotted for rightfield with Nimmo shifting back to center if it comes to signing him.
