  1. Any reason why Piazza isn't playing instead of coaching? Bernie Williams is on the active roster for the 'Ricans.
  2. There was a caller on WFAN who said he was a former bodybuilder and steroid user. Said that cysts were common in steroid users at the injection site. He said that the hip was a common injection site. Again - that came from a caller so take it for what its worth.
  3. Too big for lights, no? I was thinking statues but that middle one seems way too big for that.

  8. I realize this is the media trying to make sumpin' outta nuttin' but I love the fact that A-Rod just cannot get out of his own way... LOOSE LIPS A-ROD HAS CYST ON HIP By KEVIN KERNAN March 4, 2009 -- JUPITER, Fla. - Chalk up yet another day when Alex Rodriguez rocked the Yankee Universe. Rodriguez first shook things up yesterday afternoon when he tried to compliment Jose Reyes, which left A-Rod open to criticism that he had dissed Derek Jeter. A second tremor came last night when it was revealed the Rodriguez has a hip injury that likely will knock him out of the World Baseball Classic, sources said. Earlier in the day when I asked A-Rod about the Mets shortstop's laser running ability, he said, "I wish he was leading off on our team or playing on our team; that's fun to watch." "Our team" happens to be the Yankees, which has Jeter at short and Johnny Damon leading off. Shortly after A-Rod made his statement, he sent word through a WBC official that he did not mean anything negative toward Jeter. Too late, the blogo-sphere was off and running with the quote, and once again A-Rod was being criticized for saying the wrong thing, even though he was simply trying to praise Reyes. As for the right hip injury, Rodriguez will fly to Colorado today to be examined by Dr. Marc Phillopon. Turns out Rodriguez had an MRI Saturday in Tampa, and a cyst was discovered in the hip before he came to the WBC. Rodriguez has had tightness in the hip, going back to last season. On Monday, during the Dominican team practice, he ran sprints and stretched, showing no signs of any problems. But hip explosion is essential to hitting. He was 1-for-3 yesterday with a double in the 10-1 win over the Marlins and left the game in the fifth inning. "He has no pain," said a Yankees source. "We just want to take every precaution." In a statement Brian Cashman said, "We felt it was in everyone's best interests - for the team and the player - to send Alex to Dr. Phillopon, who is regarded as the leading expert in his field." The Yankees, no fans of the WBC, likely will pull A-Rod from the tournament because too much is at stake. Rodriguez has been in the middle of a steroid storm this spring, and this is another setback. Though A-Rod repeated he is having a great time, the WBC has already caused him problems like with his Reyes comment. He could have chosen his words better. The politically correct answer would have been: "It's great to be Jose's WBC teammate. It's great to be playing with Derek Jeter, a first-ballot Hall of Famer, every day with the Yankees." I don't think life should be that scripted, though. I like it when athletes live in the moment, let it go and say what they have to say. That's what makes them human, and if we've learned anything about A-Rod over the last few weeks, he is human. He makes plenty of mistakes. But let's be honest, he didn't exactly come out and say, "I hate Jeter." And, honestly, wouldn't you want Reyes leading off for any team? After A-Rod praised Reyes and Hanley Ramirez, I asked Rodriguez if he watched Reyes run the bases. That's when he smiled and said, "I wish he was leading off on our team or playing on our team; that's fun to watch." A-Rod then caught himself, hitting the edit button. "Anytime you have that type of speed; we have a guy in [brett] Gardner, that's probably the most fun you can have is watching a guy like that run." The press conference ended. A-Rod punched the edit button again, sending word through a representative he did not mean anything against Jeter. The WBC format does not allow media into the clubhouse, so there were no more explanations. The hole had been dug. Yes, Jeter always says the right thing and would not get in such a mess. But that can be boring; A-Rod is never boring. He's never going to be Jeter and that's a good thing. He's different. A-Rod's hip injury is much more of a concern than an off-the-cuff comment. kevin.kernan@nypost.com

Most players sat alone or spoke softly to teammates. There was a game to play, the Mets' last exhibition before opening day, but nobody seemed to care. The night before, at a team dinner, the players had learned that Brian Cole, a 22-year-old outfielder who had been with them for much of spring training, had been killed in a car accident. ''There's no doubt that baseball is definitely secondary today,'' the veteran outfielder Darryl Hamilton said. ''It's going to be like that for a little while for us. You can't just let it go.'' Cole was driving from spring training in Port St. Lucie, Fla., to Meridian, Miss., with his 17-year-old cousin, Ryan Cole, on Saturday afternoon. According to the Florida Highway Patrol in Panama City, Fla., Brian Cole's 2001 Ford Explorer, which was exceeding the 70-mile-an-hour speed limit, drifted onto the grass median from the inside westbound lane of State Route 8. The car then re-entered the westbound lane, slid sideways and rolled almost two times. Brian Cole, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the car. He and his cousin were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital in Marianna, Fla., almost 20 miles east of the accident site. Brian Cole was pronounced dead there, and Ryan Cole, who was wearing a seat belt, was treated and released. The police said neither alcohol nor drugs were involved in the accident. The Mets and Pittsburgh Pirates observed a moment of silence for Cole before today's game at PNC Park, and the Mets are preparing to honor him in another way. A prayer service for Cole was held for the Mets' minor leaguers in Port St. Lucie, where workouts were canceled. Dr. Allan Lans, the director of the Mets' employee assistance program, will meet with the Class AA Binghamton Mets, the team Cole would have played for, to counsel them. ''That we were all together when we heard it, I think, is something that will make us a little stronger, that we shared our grief together,'' Mets Manager Bobby Valentine said. ''Guys know there was real emotion there, and a lot of people to share it with.'' Jason Phillips, a Mets catcher who played with Cole last season, said a driver had backed into Cole's Explorer a week ago. Cole planned to fly to Binghamton after driving hi car home so that his father and brother could take it in for repairs. ''That's the only reason he was going home,'' Phillips said. Phillips and others remembered Cole's quiet confidence and his ability to match his expectations. In an interview last month, Cole said his goals for last year had been 60 stolen bases, 18 home runs, a .300 average and 75 runs batted in. He exceeded every figure. Cole was in major league training camp for the first time this spring, and he impressed Mookie Wilson, the Mets' outfield coach, with his willingness to learn. All their conversations, Wilson said, were about how Cole could get better. Cole would sit in a corner of the locker room taking everything in, and he became friends with the veteran infielder Desi Relaford. The two played video games together, and Cole spent time at Relaford's home in Jacksonville, Fla. ''It's hard to comprehend the fact it's a life that's over,'' Relaford said. Mets General Manager Steve Phillips said Cole was projected to be an impact player in the majors, and that his talents suggested he could be an updated version of the classic leadoff hitter -- Cole could steal bases, but he also had pop in his bat. Phillips saw Cole play for the Class A St. Lucie Mets last year, and Cole put on a show -- infield hits, stolen bases, home runs. The Mets even considered promoting him last September. ''We had some of our longest discussions about him during spring,'' Valentine said. ''Most of it was about whether he was going to hit 20 or 35 homers in the big leagues.'' Cole was named the organization's player of the year last season, and he was considered the team's third best prospect behind outfielder Alex Escobar and pitcher Pat Strange. Pitcher Jerrod Riggan, a former teammate, struggled to fight back tears this morning. ''He knew he was going to make it,'' Riggan said. ''He knew he was going to be a big leaguer.'' Riggan was not the only Met hit hard by the news. Cole was a teammate for a few weeks, the veteran John Franco said, but he was part of the Mets' family. ''We all have some types of tears in our eyes,'' Franco said. ''The kid had a great future ahead of him, and it was stopped so short with a tragedy like that. It makes you realize how precious life is and appreciate everything you have. You want to go home and give your kids a big hug.'' Photo: Brian Cole (Gary I. Rothstein) MFS62 Mar 31 2009 07:46 AM Thanks, Irish. And thank all of you. Later 86-Dreamer Mar 31 2009 08:52 AM It is a nice tribute to a life cut short. 10. Wade Boggs? In 1988 I fell under the trance of Gregg Jefferies, telling all who would listen that the Mets had a future Hall of Famer on their hands. I was certain of it. My friend laughed in my face and we bet that if Jefferies did not make the Hall I would have to either buy him a new car or pay for his kid's college education. I've been ducking him pretty good for a few years now.

  12. I was listening to Francesa a little while ago and it turned out that Wright ultimately did not go on the air with him today. One guy calls in to debate Wright's real or imagined un-clutchityness and brings up 2-3 specific instances where Wright did in fact get important hits in big spots late in a game and season. Francesa basically dismissed him. A lady calls in saying that Wright early in his career stated that he would love to pattern himself after Jeter and that he has failed miserably in that attempt. Not because of his lack of clutch, but because he refused to acknowledge that Francesa's critiques were not personal! Of course Francesa loved this and went on to say that the Wright-not-talking-to-him story had gotten way out of hand and everybody should just let it go. He then proceeds - immediately after making that last statement mind you - to recap the entire 'controversy'. Then - and this part made me laugh - he says that last year after Wright got miffed at him, Jay Horowitz tried to play peacemaker and came to Francesa and told him that he would get Wright on the air with him. Francesa said fine. But then Horowitz came back to him and told him that 'Wright said no'. Yesterday, Horowitz did the same thing, came to Francesa and told him that he would try to get Wright for him. Again Wright said no. Francesa said 'that was two times. There won't be a third.' If you didn't think that Francesa was an asshole before...

  16. Supposedly Wright is pissed at him because Francesa harshly criticized him during the stretch run last year. Church's issue is that Francesa has constantly reported that Church is very unhappy in New York. Francesa says he got this information from a very reliable source. Church has denied that from the first day Francesa reported it.
