  1. Meanwhile I will now grow a beard. Reverse karma baby!
  2. Well I got about halfway through the 'Hebner Memories' and then assumed I knew the theme of the rest of them. I guess that at that time me thinking Hebner was a bad egg was pretty much the party line for Mets fans. Combination of a surly guy and dissatisfied fans. Some funny lines in some of those memories though. Some of Sparkle n' Shari's best work I would presume.

He led the team in RBIs, but when it became clear that he was what he was, he was roundly booed by the 1,500 people who were showing up. He said --- surprise --- that playing New York made him unhappy, which naturally amplified the booing. He wanted to leave town and the Mets saw to it. Which doesn't make him a cupcake, or even not a douchebag. I don't know. I just think people subsequently got way too exorcised about his pretty typical performance. He had been reduced to platooning with Phillie by the time we got him anyhow anyhow. He eventually went to Detroit for fourth outfielder Jerry Morales and AAA infielder Phil Mankowski. Yeah I'm sure it had something to do with that. Maybe he said something nasty though towards the fans either while here on his way out.
  4. RE: Hebner If he was such a great guy then how come I remember him as being a total douchebag?
  5. Between Dmitri and Delmon I'm beginning to think that substance abuse may not be the only issue that the Young family struggles with. Dmitri Young gets 12 months probation for assault By L.L. BRASIER FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER September 26, 2006 Former Detroit Tiger slugger Dmitri Young on Tuesday apologized in court to the woman hes accused of assaulting in a Birmingham hotel and told the court sobriety is tough. Young was charged with choking Michelle Schumaker, a 21- year old college student from Toledo, at the Townsend Hotel April 14. He pleaded no contest to a domestic violence charge June 27 and was sentenced today in 48th District Court to 12 months probation and three weekends of community service with the Oakland County Sheriffs Office. Judge Diane DAgostini told Young today that his previous no contest plea was not allowed under Michigan law in domestic violence cases, and that he would have to plead either guilty, or if he chose, not guilty, and stand trial. Young then entered a guilty plea. No contest pleas are treated as convictions, and are usually entered in cases to avoid subsequent civil liability Judge Diane DAgostini also ordered Young to pay $700 in court cost and $30 in monthly oversight fee to the court. "This has been one of the worst years imaginable for me, Young told the judge. He then asked the judge for permission to address Schumaker. I would like to tell Miss Schumaker that Im sorry, he told the judge. DAgostini agreed. Young then turned to Schumaker and said: Michelle, Id like to apologize for what happened. I wish you the best of luck. Earlier in the hearing Schumaker told the judge that Young had publicly apologized to everyone under the sun except me. Youngs attorney, Paul Rinaldi, told the judge that Young had not apologized to Schumaker because he was instructed by a judge in May not to have any contact with the woman. Schumaker told the court that she was in love with Young. Then that morning I woke up in a room with a man I didnt recognized. She described her injuries she said she suffered, including having some of her hair pulled out, bruises, and a broken cell phone. The judge ordered Young to pay Schumaker $400 in restitution. Young, 32, who spent two weeks this summer in a substance abuse treatment facility, was released from the Tigers ball club Sept.6. He is to also undergo daily drug and alcohol screenings for 30 days. If he completes the drug screenings he will be allowed to travel to Florida to visit his children, the judge said.
  6. Just a snippet from the recap article... September 27, 2006 Championship Hangover Lingers for Mets By BEN SHPIGEL But Randolph was a part of what was almost a colossal collapse. In 2000, when he was a coach with the Yankees, he watched a bunch coming off two consecutive World Series titles stagger down the stretch. Those Yankees lost 15 of their last 18 regular-season games, including the final seven, and backed into the division title with a Red Sox loss. It took a while in the playoffs for them to regain their swagger, needing all five games to defeat Oakland, then six against Seattle before dispatching the Mets in five games to win the World Series. 15 of 18 and 7 in a row to close out the season. Not saying that I'd prefer that the Mets finish up like that but it does prove that momentum may actually be overrated and that perhaps, once the postseason begins it in fact IS a brand new season.
  7. Look how much nicer that uniform looks without the black drop shadow.

I would think this would be true only if the wives were recognizable - Anna Benson, etc. I'm sure Jay Gibbons' wife would be relatively anonymous should she take a sit with the - what was it - 'the great unwashed'? Really, who would know what some bench players wife would look like? Besides you I mean.

  12. IT'S A WASH. BY MICHAEL MORRISSEY September 25, 2006 -- Carlos Beltran arrived at Shea Stadium around 10 a.m. yesterday and hitting coach Rick Down walked over to his locker to get a status report on his strained left quad. To the relief of Met fans, Beltran woke up on the right side of the bed. Saying he was "feeling a lot better," Beltran tested his leg by running before yesterday's 5-1 loss to Washington. He now expects to play tonight. In a morning conversation with the Post, the MVP candidate stepped back from the idea of getting a shot for the injury. Beltran said he hasn't discussed a cortisone shot with the team, and manager Willie Randolph also downplayed that scenario. Beltran has missed the last six games. "Right now, I don't feel it like the way when it happened," he said. "But it feels weird. It feels weird for all these days without running. I just want to test it and see how it goes." After the game, he said, "Everything went fine." Although his legs felt a little bit tight and "kind of heavy," he was encouraged. "I didn't feel any pain, so that was a good thing," he said. "If I don't feel anything (when he wakes up today), I'll be out there (tonight)." With rain forecast in New York yesterday, Randolph was adamant about keeping Beltran out of the lineup "even if he came and said he wanted to play." On Saturday, Beltran expressed frustration about being sidelined and worried that he wouldn't have enough time to get ready for the playoffs. Yesterday, he said he was getting excited about the playoffs.
  13. martin wrote: i thought he broke his lower leg, but he broke his femur! eek, that hurts, i think the femur is the biggest fattest strongest bone we gots. he must have really punished his leg to snap that thing. My wife was watching the game with me when Johnson went down and when he rolled over and the lower leg just kind of flopped we both looked at each other and said 'broken femur' 5 years ago when our 7 year old was 2 he broke his femur when our dog, Mookie, ran fullspeed into him. When I picked my son up off the ground his leg from the knee down was just sort of hanging and flopping. We'd thought he'd ripped ligaments in his knee but ultimately it was the femur. Yup - biggest bone in the body. Our son had to be put in almost a full body cast (from his chest down both legs) to ensure that he kept his hips immobilized. 9 weeks before that cast came off. Ugh. I don't know if keeping the hips immobile is as much of a concern for an adult so maybe Johnson just gets one leg in a cast. in any case its a nasty, nasty injury.

Everybody uses goatee for the whole thing, because (a) vandyke sounds dumb, and ( neither Dick nor Jerry had one. Coupla things - Vandyke does not sound dumb, it sounds cool. Super cool in fact. When the vandyke/goatee craze first hit in the cearly 90's it was me that started it. I was the first. Same thing in the early '80s with the RayBan Wayfarer sunglasses. Had 'em BEFORE 'Risky Business'. When I grew that first goatee in like 1989-90 my European mother's first response was 'Oh, you grew a vandyke'.
