  1. What is a shunt?
  2. ]That's wrong. The Dodgers are up by half a game after last night's win. Whatever. But that's exactly the purpose of this thread.

  4. My guess is that the standings thread we already have is going to get flooded with pictures as the magic number winds down. And that's a beautiful thing. But it means actual talk will get buried quickly. So I'll start this for general comments and pictures of the actual standings. ------------------------ Three way tie with a record of 58-56 out west: San Diego Los Angeles Arizona

Carter had just struck out: http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/B09170NYN1986.htm How'd you do that? Did you search on the runs and hits through 7? (or whatever inning it was) Or did you look at all the Cub games that year?
  11. Edgy DC wrote: ="Elster88"]IMHO, the Internet is partly, if not mostly, responsible for the demise of the quality of sports' periodicals. How about the seperate, though related, rise of rotisserie/fantasy sports hobbying, and journals angling to porvide those hobbyists with data and betting angles that don't really illuminate the culture of the sport, and sometimes dim it? That's what I was going to say next.
  12. I guess playing in the Met outfield automatically means you become a good thrower-outter of runners.

  19. I look at it from a personal level, too. Piazza had a huge impact on my baseball fandom....and will never be replaced. Being in the crowd for his last game as a Met and first coming back on another team showed me that a helluva a lot of peeps feel the same way. The "never be replaced" includes if the Mets run a guy through their farm system who is the best position player ever to wear a Met jersey, who says all the right things, who challenges for an MVP in his second year, and plays his entire career as a Met.....probably because even though Mike didn't do those things, his Met career was right in that period of my life where sports mattered the most. And he brought me out of the hell that was "being a Met fan in the mid-nineties". So for me, retire the number. If no one else wears it in Queens I'll be just fine.
  20. Good to know Milledge is "a fake". We should let Omar know so they can just cut him and not waste time seeing if he develops.
  21. metirish wrote: You're joking about Kevin Mass, right?, he played 4 seasons and a total of 384 games for them....how could they retire his number? http://www.baseball-reference.com/m/maaske01.shtml They didn't retire his number, they just gave him a plaque.
  22. It wasn't a cheap shot. Manny's earned it.
  23. They didn't get it. Oh and remember that Boston team that beat the shit out of the entire National League and the best team in the National League? Well, that team doesn't exist anymore. The team that currently plays in Boston lost again to Kansas City.
