  1. The bums. Let's kick it in gear here or something. Can still bounce back.
  2. Edgy DC wrote: Really, if that's a reference to Perez, the answer is not really. Generally, no. Especially when you've got two extra pen guys anyway, and don't have to ever pinch hit cause you play in a stupid league.

One day, a feisty senior citizen is going to kick your ass for that kind of age joke. I wouldn't be me because I was laughing too hard. Later Is it safe to assume that once one stops laughing at jokes like this you become the butt of them?

Take out Sabathias ~3.20 over that time and it would look a whole lot worse. - Justin Morneau has been declared done for the year and will not play in any post-season games I agree with Francessa that AJ is probably only there as emergency Pettitte insurance, but still, isn't having a guy on the roster that you can't and shouldn't use detrimental? He's like 3-8 with a 6 ERA in teh second half.
  6. I despise all these extra days. There is too many off days, especially between series. 19 games max, and it takes 29 days? You know, if they added another wildcard quick series but cut out the days off the playoffs would be over quicker, there'd be more games to watch more often, and we wouldn't even notice.
  7. It's cool and all...but _has_ anyone gotten here from there?
  8. One of the first, and most important, decisions to be made by the new GM will be the manager. Who he favors for the job probably plays a big part in if he even gets hired. I think I agree with Francessa, that it's less likely to be Backman. (I was never convinced it was even likely, particularly given the likelihood the hirer wasn't even around yet to be speculating on such) Backman's more of a fan/history type choice, but I don't imagine the new GM would give much sway to that.
  9. Edgy DC wrote: He had a good pen, pretty much his whole tenure. What he didn't have is the manager to manage it well, or frequently, the offense to take the heat off of it. I'm simplfying. "good enough" pen? "Better" pen? While this is probably the case of every team, I always felt they could've used one more guy. (and with the possible exception of Manuel, who may have kept post-interim by others, he hired that manager/offense)
  10. Willets Point wrote: I always thought he was good at big things - signing Martinez & Beltran, trading for Santana, et al - but poor at getting the supporting cast for the big stars (often erring to players with impressive track records who were on the verge of precipitous decline or already declining). I agree with this. I always felt he was one extra reliever away from a good pen, or always chose the 'safe/boring/crappy' bench guys when something creative would've worked better. I'd say teh turning point to me was when he rewarded the cheating bum Mota, who was one of the biggest culprits in '06, and gave the long contract to Schoe. Also how he refused to even call up a Buffalo reliever in '07 when Willie was wearing out the sucky guys that were sucking. (If I recall Colazzo and Muniz were both pitching well down there)
  11. There is not a single person that ever wore a Mets uniform that I was happier to see go. Most of his quirks wore on me pretty fast, but what I did enjoy is how he always seemed to carry a bat around with him when walking around in batting practice or spring training.
  12. metirish wrote: Jeff "will listen to the new GM about changing the dimensions of Citi Field"..... doesn't sound convincing though , and I hope it doesn't change. I hope they don't hire a GM who's grand idea is "Hey, let's move in the fences!" That doesn't speak to me as a guy who's got a real solid plan for the future. I guess I wouldn't be totally opposed to moving them in a handful of feet if need be, but I kinda like the park as it. In fact, I think the park can be rather intimidating at times to other teams who may stumble into Goose Egg sweeps. Flipped on Francessa a bit before, figured talking Mets so i'd listen, see what's up. less time consuming than constantly refreshing twitter instead of working, but he was too annoying going on like he knows what season tickets holders are going to do and how they think and what Mets fans want.
  13. Steve Popper and Jon Heyman annoyed that we are reveling in this. Why am I not supposed to be overjoyed about finally getting rid of a bad guy who mismanaged something I love for years?
  14. HahnSolo wrote: One final note: while taking the Citi Field tour in August, the guide mentioned that the starting pitcher each day chose the music in the clubhouse and which uniform would be worn. I don't know if this is true...have not heard it anywhere else, but did anyone else who took the tour hear that? Shannon @ MetsPolice confirmed this with someone as well. I still suspect the Mets 'strongly urge' a choice sometimes, and that sometimes the pitchers don't care/don't pick. Also, Mets are undefeated at home on Tuesdays.
  15. Also, Matt Pignataro had the story a full day before Heyman did. But I guess it doesn't become real until it's somewhere that's not a blog.
  16. I understand that a writer's not just making stuff up, but I do feel like they draw conclusions based on what they've been told and hinted at to create a story that they feel is readable or is breaking news. I grow skeptical of it all because it feels to me sometimes, particularly with Heyman, Rubin, etc, that they're looking for facts to fit a story they want to tell, versus finding facts and creating a story from them. What Heyman wrote today isn't much different than what, say Adam Rubin, wrote earlier this week. Did Heyman just present it as more solid? And obviously once someone breaks something, everyone else will jump at it. But in this case no one else actually got any more information, and actually were told things that suggested it wasn't the case. Yet the general consensus on Twitter and around Metsblog/etc seems to be that it's pretty much a done deal. I guess my confusions lies in that I don't really know what the facts are and what's actually been decided. Even I could've told you that we should stay tuned Monday for information, I didn't need Heyman to leak it and then reiterate all the other names that have been mentioned. And because there is nothing solid, it doesn't drive me to read what he's written about it, except when it blows up into a big deal.
  17. Frayed Knot wrote: today he declared it official. That could just mean that (according to his sources) a decision has been made (in fact, that's what I think it does mean) but that's not the same thing as declaring that all parties have been told that directly. If there's one thing we know for sure it's that this NYM front office leaks worse that a Senate sub-committee. I find it hard to distinguish what's a "leak" and what's a cleverly disguised "assumption" by a writer. What ever Heyman said, it was enough to prompt other writers to ask Omar and Jerry directly if they'd been talked to by ownership. What was it today about the way he said it that made virtually everyone run with the story that it'd been decided, when similar such assertions had been mentioned for weeks? Final weekend of the season jitters/story wrapups? Or is this just a back and forth between writers without much else to write about trying to get the first/best/most interesting story and leaving those of us that just want the cold hard facts with a mess of noise to filter through to try to figure out what's actually going on?
  18. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: I don't see where Heyman's reporting the guys have been pre-fired. He has a source who's either right or wrong on what ownership's about to do and he's trusting they are right. today he declared it official.
  19. themetfairy wrote: Let's keep him. I hear Bengie Molina's a free agent. Why didn't we lock that guy up for two last year again?
  20. Edgy DC wrote: Nothing odd about it to me. They got some supposedly inside information about the team's plans, and they ran with it, making it awkward for those whose fates the information involves. It sucks for them, but it happens all the time. It's the worse keep secret in baseball right now, but I'm supposed to believe someone actually came out and told Jon Heyman, "Yup, 100%, it's a go" on Friday three days before they'd actually be doing all this officially? After supposedly keeping it under wraps, at least officially, for weeks?
  21. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Ceetar wrote: Other people are reporting that Omar hasn't been told this yet right? Sure, I doubt he'd admit it. But I find it suspect that only Heyman has it Omar's not firing himself, you know. yes, but Heyman says they were told and declared it official today. Odd timing with three days left.
  22. Today is 38 in binary. so that's how much the Mets are going to score.
  23. crowd aside, Citi Field's nicer anyway. and has better food.
