I'm certain that isn't their strategy in any way and they mean to acquire some players also. We're only talking about a million or two raise here. And maybe they think they can spend that money better elsewhere. I don't know. Maybe they'll sweep in with a midnight offer. if the team feels a lefty specialist is important, why not the one we know and theoretically trust? Do we think we can get better? doesn't Aldy have enough to worry about? I think if you slice up his 2010 season, there's plenty to worry about with Feliciano. Aldy? Aldy? I thought we were going cutesy in this thread. I'm not going to be disappointed if they let him go, but I don't think the downside of having to pay him an extra million or so is even much of a downside, and certainly not for the possibility of a replacement pick. his numbers against lefties still seemed good in 2010.

I couldn't stand how Davey Johnson's post-game chats were peppered with references to "Mexy," "Millsy," and "Nailsy." "Nailsy"? You ever listen to Girardi interview with Francessa? He gets so cutesy with the names that you'd think he was a 12 year old girl (the braces help with that as well) Hughesy?
  4. metirish wrote: So , mot only are you weighing the possible price tag but also the supplemental round draft pick......not sure if I want him back regardless of any of that...he wasn't that good against righties last season was he? Why are we pitching him against righties again? We face Ryan Howard 18 times, he's only hit home runs against lefty relievers 3 times in his career. To me, having a good LOOGY goes a long way towards winning some of those games.
  5. Frayed Knot wrote: Biggest local question is Pedro Feliciano. Adam Rubin seems to think that they'll NOT make an offer for fear of getting stuck with a $4mil price tag on an aging LOOGY who appeared in 468 games just last season alone. The restriction about not being able to then make a deal with your own non-arb offered player no longer exists so the Mets & Pedro could still reach an agreement separate from this process, only with the other 29 teams being able to compete as well. That means the only drawback to NOT offering is, that as a 'Type B' FA, Pedro signing with another team would net us a Supplemental Round pick in next year's draft. No arb = no pick regardless of if/where he signs. They've already let one solid bullpen pitcher go, can they really afford to let another one go? I know LOOGY's are not super-important pieces, but it just adds yet another piece for Sandy to find, and risks that guy not being good. So far Sandy has only lost players. Feliciano has pitched a lot, but he's proven he can handle that, and 60IP is not 260IP. would one year, at a max of a 1-2 million raise and the possibility of a draft pick if he leaves, really be a bad idae?
  6. I'll have eto try to remember to listen. If it even matters. Also, Terry, Jerry, Willie, (Artie?), Bobby. lot's of -y/-ie endings there. Wonder if it really came down to Wally or Terry.

  8. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: THAT's right-- the whole "catcher ERA" boondoggle. I remember it coming off as a little untoward, or tin-eared, at best... but then, team pitching (perhaps unsustainably) was a LOT better this year. Nobody asked what he'd been "sitting on" for a few weeks re: why Backman wasn't a REALLY serious candidate? Or was that the attendance business? geeze, I'd forgot about his unfounded rumormongering. Think it was the attendance thing? that's a stupid one, if it is.
  9. Frayed Knot wrote: What happened w/ Omir Santos last year? Warthen made some comments - I think it was last spring - to the effect that Omir wasn't exactly the favorite target for most of the pitchers. Rubin's comment that maybe some players felt that way also is a new one at least to me. I thought those comments were broader, and encompassed Schneider as well. I still think Warthen's worthless though.
  10. If he stays without looking like the greedy scum he is, it'll suck. However, if he leaves and fades away with the Royals or something, We're gonna get a couple of months worth of "Oh, great joy! Jeter has finally re turned to the stadium like he belongs! how wonderful life is isn't it?" some time down the road. Although the drama of maybe AJ beaning him in a game, or him hitting a walk off homer against them with that short porch (wait..the biggest problem here might be a situation where I could actually want to root for Jeter. ick. i feel dirty already) might be fun.
  11. I have no desire to 'chat' with that guy. Someone ask him if he's in the running for the scouting job.
  12. Fman99 wrote: Oh, the hyperbole train keeps a rollin' thanks to our moronic friend Wally Matthews. Now, Jeter is the modern-day Babe Ruth, at least according to his agent (quoting the Yankees vaguely). Like the Babe, I have something stuck in my throat. Not a tumor, just a wad of Monday vomit. The article draws an interesting parallel, documenting the slowly decreasing salaries that Ruth and Mantle faced, pre-reserve clause. It doesn't apply here, now, but still. The radio hacks like Kay make it sound like it'd be an affront to Jeter to offer him less than the $18.9 mil per year he's averaged for the last 10 years. Ruth made so much more money in his day than anyone else, and prorated to modern day he'd be making less than Cervelli. But let them draw all the parallels they want, Ruth ended his career in Boston.

  14. Okay, so apparently they live in Jersey. what's his daughter do? lets get with the stalking people.
  15. *yawn* can we sign a pitcher now? maybe 2 or 3?
  16. Those guys certainly accumulate WAR fast.. .28-.29 is what, 3 and a half days? and they got like 8 WAR.
  17. http://nybaseballdigest.com/?p=31181 aparently Dino Costa of Mad Dog radio is projecting Backman.
  18. Edgy DC wrote: Pretty cool, in the end, that with all Sandy bringing in his own guys, and with those guys looking to bring in their own guys, that the final four are all internal candidates. It implies that the team has done something right the last few years, or something consistent with Sandy Alderson's idea of right, and he maybe won't have to turn everything over to get the team going in the direction he wants them moving in. yeah, I mean, the perception that everything Omar did was detrimental and inept is wearing on me a bit. Lots of people writing off 2011 prematurely as a year to let the kids play and grow up, but those very kids were all drafted by Omar..
  19. Yet supposedly they're taking the day off today and will get together tomorrow to actually make the decision everyones sure they've made already. Still don't see any "they'll hire Backman" leaks though. curious.

  21. As long as we're being stalkerish..she did a commercial for the Mariners somewhere, does that disqualify Bob? facebook fan page IMDB Twitter last tweet? Alexi wrote: I really think the squirrels in bronxville may be on crack. she used to have a blog that it looks like she deleted, and someone named "Judy Melvin" keeps commenting on your facebook posts.
  22. Alexi thinks it should've been cast this way.
  23. OlerudOwned wrote: batmagadanleadoff wrote: If the Yankees are being sincere when they say that they want to pay Jeter strictly as a player, then 3 x $15M is an exceedingly generous offer. I think that the Yankees have most of the leverage here. The few other teams that can afford to top the Yankees 3x15M offer would be crazy to do so. What's Jeter gonna do? I think the Red Sox should blow him away with an offer, just as an astronomically expensive practical joke. I think the Phillies should, and then have him play second and move Utley.

  25. Works for me. i do wish they're iron out the "definition" of the award a little clearer so people were voting on the same thing.
