  2. Benjamin Grimm wrote: It effectively cost them a roster spot. In the long run, given the way 2010 turned out, it probably didn't matter. But at the time, we didn't know that. The Mets were still a contending team until early July. Perez's stubbornness could have been very costly. Anyway, whether the selfishness proved harmful or not, it's not an admirable quality. It certainly can be considered grounds for not liking him. Except that M went just as long not using Elmer Dessens either. So it's not like he was sitting there wishing he had another pitcher out there. And the Mets brought him back from the minors early for some odd reason.

If he pitches well enough in the spring to earn a spot and then has two solid starts on the road, then I'll support him. If he pitches well enough in the spring to earn a spot, then gets lit up in his first two starts, then I'll get my pitchfork and flaming torch ready for his homecoming. What if he pitches badly and they make that home start "pitchfork giveaway day"?
  4. Hypothetical time, because, it's November and my Paradox script is pissing me off and I'd rather think about the Mets. Say Perez performs well now and in Spring Training and for whatever crazy reason, makes it into the rotation. It's possible he could have two starts before pitching at Citi Field. Is there anything he can do in those two starts that would earn him any credibility before his first start at home? And in a related note, will attendance spike for that game? I sense a willingness for fans to actually go out and boo him.
  5. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: He's a little like John Maine, right down to the attractive whiff numbers and multiple shoulder woes. Both were pretty good in 2007. I would guess Young could come cheaper at this point. Last clocked throwing 85-86 too.
  6. bmfc1 wrote: Heyman says that the Mets "are closing in on a deal with veteran right-hander Chris Young, who would fit their park perfectly." http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/y/youngch03.shtml Was Olney that said 'fits the park perfectly' I believe. I wonder how much? He had a 8.5 million option declined by the Padres. does he take peanuts so early? He was 85-86 on the gun when he returned last season after shoulder surgery. A lot like John Maine actually, with a lot more upside. Interesting though.
  7. Edgy DC wrote: You know, if the Yankees acquired Rafael Furcal, it would scare the pants of Jeter's negotiating team. They would literally walk into the negotiating room pantless. After they capitulate, the Yankees could flip the guy again, or wind up stuck with a high-priced backup for a season. It's funny, just signing Furcal and releasing him after Jeter caved would probably save them money.
  8. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: And speaking of teal... yeah, were I Alderson, I would have done this... even with the no-arb stipulation. The Marlins have agreed to terms on a one-year deal with Javier Vazquez, pending a physical, according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports. Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports adds that the deal will be worth $7 million, with a full no-trade clause and the Marlins can not offer Vazquez arbitration. Are the Marlins "going for it?" or is this their yearly transaction to make sure they don't get yelled at for stealing money again? Seems pretty lose-lose for them. Either Vazquez continues to suck like I expect, or he has a good year and will depart for a more lucrative deal and the Marlins don't even get picks out of it.
  9. Edgy DC wrote: It's $2.64 mil. He doesn't have to be as good as he was in 2007 to be worth that. I'd certainly take 2006 or 2008 numbers for that change. I'm almost certain he's gone, though. The team probably can't handle the stress of trying to figure him and and Perez out again. They probably want to give Warthan some new problems. I don't think there's anything bum-like about Warthan. I think people are tired of both of them, however, what's best for the team is not necessary to adhere to what the fans want. I'm curious what other teams think of Maine. I don't think they do 2.64 million, but I think they might be well served to offer him something lesser, after the fact. If someone really wants him, he'll go elsewhere, but if he's willing to prove it in Buffalo..
  10. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: The money's worth it if he's 2007 John Maine-- or something like it-- at the end of it all. But here's the rub: that's his ONLY fully healthy, productive year on record in the last five. So there's no guarantee-- hell, little likelihood-- of his being able to reach, much less sustain, that again. Plus, he's now three full years removed from that. And it wasn't THAT damn good. They've been giving him the rehab-project money, in essence, for the last two years. If nothing else-- his history here, last year's Warthen business-- he's a classic-needs-a-change-of-scenery case at this point. Well, still unhappy about Warthen myself. But since they've decided to keep the bum, you gotta make sure he wants to work with Maine. But Maine's a fighter, works hard, cares..etc. supposedly likes it here, is close to Pelfrey, etc. but I do feel like we're working off little info. When is he gonna start throwing again? is he? What's his velocity at? Can he be ready to throw when pitchers and catchers report? Would he be willing (not sure what the contract would say here) to start in Buffalo if he's not quite ready yet but shows promise? Do the Mets feel his 'natural' motion is likely to cause the injury to reoccur, or he can adjust his mechanics to suit? Do they trust Collins and Warthen to possible rest a guy more regularly coming off shoulder surgery?
  11. Edgy DC wrote: Problem is that this report may have been filed before his mandatory five-day vacation to rest his leg. I have to imagine that was somewhat expected right? As part of a rest cycle in the rehab from surgery?
  12. Ashie62 wrote: If the general idea is to lighten the Mets payroll I don't see that you tender Maine. He is very ordinary. is that the general idea? I thought the idea was to create roster and payroll flexibility? one year contracts don't hinder that.
  13. A Boy Named Seo wrote: Nah, wouldn't do it. Pitchers with chronically hurty pitching arms don't tend to quit being hurt, and poor guy throws all slow now, too. Sorry, Johnny Maine. I'd say you've got to work your way back to those $2.6 mils, if you were to stay around here. Would think that some team somewhere would offer him more than a minor league deal, though. well he was throwing all slow while hurt and injured. so who knows.
  14. too big a risk. offer him a minor league deal. The Mets need pitchers in camp, but Maine is virtually a complete unknown at this point, and I don't think they can afford that money on him. Now, if the 2.4 mill doesn't actually hurt the Mets from doing anything else this season, then sure, go ahead. I think he'll have a shot at a decent year now that he's actually healthy, but i don't know their finances.
  15. Kong76 wrote: Why is that better than the raw data supplied by retrosheet? (which is available now) I think that's what I'm looking for, thanks. you know, I just want to ask a lot of zany questions that I can't think of right now, but isn't usually listed anywhere obvious.
  16. RealityChuck wrote: Do you mean the Lahman Baseball Database? yeah, something like that. but that's only through 2009, it'd be nice to have the 2010 data.
  17. I'm tired of digging for these things when I want them, but have no idea where or if they're recorded. So what databases do you guys use? I found one that looked slightly outdated, but ultimately I'd like to be able to download the data, and throw SQL statements at it. or at least some sort of query. Ultimately free would be nice, but I'd certainly be willing to pay a bit for that sort of data, particularly if i could get it mostly current. This kinda access has to be out there somewhere right? That's the whole point of the 'sabermetric rebellion?'
  18. Ceetar wrote: Well, Jeter's shown his greed before with his contract. It'll probably be some game of chicken with his Ego versus his desire to only play for the Yankees. Swan Swan H wrote: Either way, I think Ceetar's call about the game of chicken is more likely to happen than a graceful meet-halfway scenario. Cashman is no sentimentalist, and he is unlikely to want to spend any more than he has to on an immobile singles hitter who is clogging up a key defensive position. Funny, I guessed 5/100 6 months ago and Jeter's demanding more than that. Could see them settling, if they do, on that. *pats himself on back*
  19. Which would be more damaging to the "Jeter Allure?" Him bolting for another team, or him having 3+ bad seasons that have Yankees fans calling into WFAN wondering why the Yankees aren't "forcing him into retirement?"
  20. seawolf17 wrote: Reyes for... Lincecum, Cain, and Buster Posey. There is NO trade that anyone would actually, realistically make that would make sense to deal Reyes. Joe Mauer? Posey's intriguing though. At least you're getting a stud at a sparse position.
  21. metirish wrote: I'd listen to offers and honestly for the right 3 or 4 prospects I would do it. Funny, I was talking to a guy in St Louis yesterday and he was saying that talk in St. Louis was trading for Reyes, he claimed they had the prospects. I'll take one prospect....and Pujols.
  22. The Mets would have to be, without a doubt, clearly better _right now_ for me to consider it. And even then, probably not. I invest a lot of emotion into the team, and I'm attached to the players. to just tear them out like that would definitely curb my enthusiasm for 2011.
  23. batmagadanleadoff wrote: Once the 2010 season was lost, I might've messed with my squad, (if it was me in charge) by asking Francoeur to hit like Castillo, while secretly demanding from Castillo that he hit like Francoeur. But eventually I woulda figured it out for myself that the best strategy would be to ask everybody to hit like Ted Williams. The big mistake was asking K-Rod to hit like Mike Tyson.
  24. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: The Glavine Wins 300 hype for me was the crystallizing moment of the Mets' complete loss of touch with its fans, and its disturbing inward focus. I mean, this was obviously all a show for Glavine, and had nothing to do with the fans, nor the team, yet was fed us like some kind of treat. --Hooray for round numbers ac heived as a Met despite the vast majority coming withour biggest rival! --Hooray for us! We committed more money and more resources than anyone else for a veteran pitcher to head up a shitty team going nowhere! shitty team going nowhere? That game should've been a iconic moment on the World Series DVD. A flashback from him hoisting that World Series trophy after a season in which he got his 300th win, and pitched a gutsy game to get the Mets to a playin game. It was the precipitus of winning as much as a Met as he did as a Brave.
