  1. Good book. #1 thing you learn is that you're thankful Strawberry dropped in the draft, because if the Mets had gotten stuck with Beane over Strawberry..yikes. I'll see the movie. It'll be particularly interesting to see which parts of the movie are taken out of context and twisted to mean something completely wrong about what Moneyball is/was.

Last night the Fish got a jump on Halladay and took a 2-run lead into the 9th. They then blew that on a 2-out/2-RBI hit before going on to lose the game in the 10th That's 7 wins in a row for Philly; 7 losses in a row and 15 of their last 16 for the Marlins The Marlins are absolute trash. I mean, they won't always play _this_ badly. They'll rebound to hold down 4th place, but geeze.
  3. The Mets won't play a NL team at home until July 15th. The last game they played against an NL opponent at home was 6/4. That's quite a stretch.

Grrrrrrrrr You know that if the Phillies continue this winning pace, in 35 or so years they'll reach that .500 mark? The Mets will need a similar winning pace and nearly as long a run. more like half. (actually closer to a third) of all the original NL teams, the Phillies are the whipping boy. I believe they're the only one significantly under .500. before 2010 they were the 26th worst franchise by total record.
  5. Frayed Knot wrote: The Braves, as it turns out, became an over .500 team as a franchise with their Sunday night win at Houston - and did so for the first time since 1923!! But Monday's loss to the Astros dropped them back to 9,983 - 9,983 and now our two wins here have set them two games under the break even point. Out mission here, of course, is to see that they remain such and hopefully reach that 10K loss mark before they reach the 10K win plateau. It's a small goal as they'll obviously do both before this season is out, but it's one worth pursuing. Admit it now, you had no idea this series held such critical importance did you?!? Anyway, going for the sweep tonight with Mr. Pelfrey facing 2nd year pitcher Mike (no known relation to Blas) Minor. The 23 y/o LHP was a (somewhat questioned) 1st round/7th overall selection by the Braves out of Vanderbilt University in 2009 who will be making his 5th start of the year and the 13th of his ML career. He was 3-2 last year in 8 starts and is 0-2 so far this season. Hopefully we'll get to see the old man with the brooms again. If we do I'm gonna celebrate by whipping my hair back and forth ... my hair back and forth. I did actually have an idea. You know that if the Phillies continue this winning pace, in 35 or so years they'll reach that .500 mark?

  7. TransMonk wrote: I thought the new plan ditched the divisions...wouldn't games against the Dodgers be just as important as the Braves in this 15 team league scenario? hey, they're just making up stuff and haven't decided a thing. i'm going to make it up my own way. *Shrug* keep the divisions.
  8. Sure, 81 games against your divisional opponents. (probably fit in a nice 4 game series in there too, or even a 5 if they're ambitious. Imagine Mets-Phillies early Septemberish, 5 games. sorta like a mini-playoff in it of itself. ) 60 games against your non-divisonal league opponents. 10 teams, two series. roughly what we do now anyway. 15 interleague games. one division. rotate. They wouldn't do this because want intercity every season. 6 more games. owners choice. trump up an opponent you like. Mets want to play the Cardinals 3 more times? request it.

  10. From Metsblog, via the FAN's interview with Alderson this morning: He spoke about the future of Jose Reyes, and said he intends to reach out to his agents soon. He is aware of the fan sentiment regarding Reyes and acknowledged that has an effect on these kinds of decisions. However, while Reyes has expressed his loyalty to the Mets and the fans, he doesnt know if Reyes intends to test free agency this winter. I'd be pretty surprised if he didn't go FA. We'll see. This means Alderson hasn't actually offered him an opportunity not to test them. give him something that works 5/6 with option years and what not and maybe he won't test free agency.

  13. bmfc1 wrote: So when the SP doesn't pitch at least 5 complete innings, the official scorer can decide who gets the win but cannot select the SP. "Change the rule!" (says Warner Wolf). If the SP doesn't pitch at least 5 complete innings but would have gotten the win if he did, then official scorer can select any of the pitchers, including the SP, to be credited with the win. I'd consider changing it if there has been an official rain delay. After all, it wasn't really due to failure of ability or anything that caused him to come out.
  14. Of course, this (no divisions)would just cause teams to clinch way earlier, and coast for even more of September. It'd probably cut down on the number of meaningful last week games.

  16. I kinda miss the "view active topics" link.
  17. It's not really 'on the table' from what I've heard. just something someone threw out there. I've always been in favor of year long interleague play. (or just keep NL at 16 and only do interleague in non-april/sept months) Or, give the players an extra roster spot (more jobs) and ditch that stupid DH thing. Abandon any last semblance of separation between AL and NL and just go with it.
  18. soupcan wrote: Ashie62 wrote: Ask Einhorn. He has 5 weeks to make up his mind. You know, it's not so far-fetched to think that it may behoove Einhorn to support a trade. The guy wants to be the majority owner. The path to ownership for him is dependent on the current ownership not being able to afford the team and/or be able to return his $200,000,000.00. If Reyes stays, it would stand to reason that the team would be more successful than if he leaves. More successful team = more revenue for current ownership = higher probability that they can pay him back = no majority ownership for Einhorn. Now the flipside could be that Einhorn thinks the Wilpon/Katzes are going to come out on the short end of Picard's lawsuit anyway and reaping the benefits of that, having a player like Reyes on HIS team would be a favorable thing. Just saying that we, as fans, should not assume that Einhorn is Jose's (and our) white knight eh. if that's the case it behooves the Wilpons to keep him. And Einhorn has no say.

WTF are you doing 1) Getting hurt waiting for a popup to come out of the sky 2) Taking 2+ months to return from said injury 3) Accomplishing both 1 and 2 as a 24-year-old. I want to see some bloody socks from this mutha if and when he makes it back. I suspect once Ike takes the boot off he'll be okay and healed and hurry back. back's are iffier things, though I am hopeful he'll get the all clear on the 24th. I'm not sure it'll take 3 weeks from that point though.

It's always a bad bet in the long-term, and investing in a lot of good pitchers is always a better bet than investing in one or two excellent ones. And it seems like employing someone like Rick Peterson who's fairly good at determining good/healthy pitching motions, might be a good idea.
