  1. I wonder if they can get a somewhat reasonable swath done in time for an All-Star Village in 2013 since we're supposedly getting the game. Although I think the All Star Village should take place in a diamond shape with the path being the Shea baselines.
  2. the site's reputable..been around a while and what not. (in so much as they're not making things up, but that doesn't mean when they link to Heyman he's not misrepresenting stuff) But the story doesn't exactly mean much. Other teams could still get in on him, the Marlins offer is largely unsubstantiated, and the Mets haven't made one.

  4. Jayson Stark (salt grains here..) reporting Heath Bell to the Marlins pending physical for 3/27. I like. Let the Marlins blow their cash on 60ip guys instead of NL batting champs or other such things that make them way better.
  5. reality shows aren't my thing, and any doubt I had that this was another version of JErsey Shore/real housewives was dashed by the retweeting of some of the stories. And it's pretty clear she's just saying things, as usual, to be controversial. So shallow it's boring (although these shows keep cropping up, so I guess i'm in the minority)
  6. Edgy DC wrote: Nobody is suggesting that he be banned, and it's a cheap distortion to suggest that that's the issue. But I wouldn't want him representing my team or city on the field of honor until he's borne the weight of his transgression through a much darker valley then his words have imply he has walked. Probably isn't enough for me to demand he meet some sort of 'darker valley', and apparently it wasn't for the Rays either. Especially from one isolated event three years ago. If there were still rumors of him Ben Roethlisbergering his way around bars (and maybe the Rays did do a little background check), it'd be a different story.
  7. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: So it's optimism about the Mets' prospects, unmitigated cynicism regarding sex crimes accusers? He eventually-- EVENTUALLY, after repeatedly lying about even knowing the accuser -- stipulated to the facts as laid out by Seko in his post (and they are graphic, so I'll refrain from recapping them here).I'm not arguing--or even suggesting--he be banned from baseball, and I don't think Seko isquite doing so, either; but is there a natural right to MLB employ that talent--superseding all othrr imperatives-- buys you? maybe it's just a belief in the justice system, flawed or not. He made a plea bargain and served the compromised time. He came out the other side with a marketable, and highly desirable, skill. why should a 'false imprisonment with violence' stop someone from buying that skill, presuming of course that there isn't any reason to think the sentence would be something that could affect his using that skill?

Across sports, I'm not sure why we need to hear from GMs so much, when really they don't want to say anything and tip their hand to agents/enemies.
  9. trade market hasn't developed yet. They'll probably grab a rule 5 guy, but hard to predict. Probably more closers than teams that need closers, not going to be goaded into overpaying via greedy agents shooting for the moon based on Amaro.
  10. probably going to touch base with Reyes again soon, but haven't talked the last couple of days. mentioned catcher and 2b, but bullpen is the glaring hole. never talked to Posada.
  11. Sandy's making the rounds, SNY, beat writers, bloggers prior to the meetings. He's gonna say a lot of things, most of which will probably be meaningless, but it's the closest thing to news we have to talk about lately. (off topic already, where'd these new sticky options come from?)
  12. I'd have traded Mike Nickeas for him. Guys got a 10.7 K/9 rate in the minors.
  13. it boils down to one thing for me. I don't believe that the guy should be banned from playing baseball for something that it wasn't, and can't be, proven he did. The small market Rays need every advantage they can get, and if can get a reliever they think can help them at an undervalued cost because he's tainted? So be it.
  14. metirish wrote: money not spent on the team is not going to the Wilpons I've looked at that several times and well how can you be sure either way?, any money not spent on players could go to other Wilpon ventures, trust funds, pension funds etc.? I guess you can't be sure sure...but I'm pretty sure. It's almost a lock that expenditures will be greater than revenue (and the Mets have a loan with MLB, beyond the Wilpons financial troubles) so if the Wilpons were to take $5 million and say pay off a trust fund or something, that's $5 million more the Mets are in debt. I think the Wilpons not doing that is the key difference between why they're still here, and the McCourts aren't.
  15. money not spent on the team is not going to the Wilpons, it's simply decreasing the amount of money the Mets lose next year. (Unless they make the playoffs, which I'd gladly trade for a couple of million profit being taken out..) I don't think Sandy's really 100% set on believing Santana's going to A. make his Opening Day start or b. make 30 starts. There will be other pitchers, on a variety of minor league/incentives/cheap deals that he brings in to Spring Training.
  16. metirish wrote: WOW, the comments coming form the fans up there is mind boggling, a lot are fixated on the Chass column and the stupid "how many days in first place", others are convinced that Valentine is nothing more than a bridge to Madden or Farrell. It would seem that the trend is negative on V. I believe through 2007-2008 the Mets spent the most time in first place. I think the 2011 Red Sox as well.

I liked Nick, and I'm sure he would've gotten another chance if he decided to stick around, but he's expendable in terms of roster space for the offseason.
  19. I suspect it's far from certain that this is necessarily going to drive talent away from baseball, or necessarily hurt small market teams. It's something to keep an eye on, but I don't think anyone exactly sure how it'll end up playing out.

Frayed Knot wrote: "[it's] like a cold sore I can't stop flicking with my tongue" -- Vic Sage, Crane Pool Press I can't imagine why the marketing department for this movie didn't use that quote in their newspaper ads. More people would read reviews written like that. I accidentally gave this a three before reading the thread and got the movie wrong. I'd thought I'd saw it because for 6 months everytime I saw my Grandma she'd ask me the name of the movie since it was Heath Ledger's last project or whatever. But I confused it in my head with that weird toy-store movie with Natalie Portman. sounds like i'd enjoy giving it a once over though. Stunning images..should I download it on Blu-ray/HD then?
  21. Watched Back tothe Future this weekend. Shouldn't it have been the Cubs that moved to the AL? I don't know how else they're going to beat Miami in 2015.
  22. From Chass's piece * [veteran manager]: Id burn out my bullpen in a minute to kick his ass. -- and if Bobby's team is my team I'd invite the opposing skipper to do so every time cuz we'll come out better in the long run * In the same conversation, one of the managers remarked, Valentines team has to be 10 games better than anyone else because everyone hates him and plays harder to beat him. -- Does anyone really actually believe this crap? ... not that sentences like this aren't said but that (by implication) teams/managers actually give up winnable games by not always trying all that hard against managers they do like and only try really hard when there's something personal on the line (and to the tune of 10 games no less)? sure..I mean, Tony LaRussa's teams in '06 and '11 had to be so much better than everyone else right?
  23. Edgy DC wrote: You get a fourth option year if you come up at a young enough age, or some'un. GM Alderson has stated on more than one occasion his confidence that Martinez is option-able this year. yeah, but they changed the rules. regardless, I was wrong, we're talking about third option year, not fourth. He didn't use one in 2009.
  24. I'm curious what the new 4th option/outrighting rules are actually, as it pertains to Fernando Martinez. I saw one or two suggestions that it's beneficial to the team (i.e. easier to have that 4th option year) but nothing's clear from the official synopsis. Is it possible F-Mart becomes ineligible for it and is forced into a on the roster or on waivers situation? edit: guess I'm wrong, he didn't actually use his 3rd option. Oh well. Willie Mays for CF anyone?

Not only is it unethical, but-- as the "Bonus Pool" formulation is a de facto slotting system-- it kinda puts another dagger in small-market gamblin'-type organizations, doesn't it? except small-market teams get extra picks, plus over-slot is still clearly possible, but you have to be smarter with it. Can't just willy nilly throw money at everyone. So benefits the small market in a way. Draftees will also be bidding against each other. The faster you sign, the more is available in the pool to give you. On the o ther hand, if you wait it out, maybe a higher pick opts for college, opening up all that extra money for you. 26 man rosters for doubleheaders, changes to the 4th option/outrighting rules, more replay. lots of interesting stuff. No new Maple bats, although Mariano Rivera will be grandfathered in, and screw you for judging him.
