  1. meh, arguable Fergie Jenkins was REALLY good that year too. less Ks, but also a lot less BBs than Seaver. Seaver had a better ERA but that was mostly because 85.7% Left On Base percentage, and lower batted ball luck
  2. and deGrom is already 'old'. Maybe that means he has more 'bullets' or whatever, but it could just mean his window/peak is smaller. This year will be less taxing on his arm, but the rest of his body is still aging too. We'll still be citing this season in 50 years when comparing deGrom to whoever's the hot pitcher of 2066.
  3. in 2020 people still struggle with how to quantitatively assess 'interest' in a sport, and also how that interest translates to revenue. Like you could not have cable and attend no games, but still watch ad-riddled bat flips via social media share. how does that factor in, and how likely is that person, in perhaps 10 years, to have kids and/or more money and spend it on the game?
  4. was 25 years ago, prices were pennies compared to now, tv, etc. it's a different world, and MLB attendance is only a tiny portion of it. Plus lingering Covid, public health, rampaging cops, who knows what going to the park will be like in 2021?
  5. I have no problem with a short season. It's different, but whatever. But there's just so much going on I'm finding it hard to imagine. Certainly shouldn't happen with snipers on the roof or heavily armed people patrolling outside, if they get to a point of letting some fans in.
  6. I'm not changing any argument, my argument is simply that the owners are evil and do evil things and get away with it, and this is unprecedented and I don't trust them to negotiate in good faith.
  7. Frayed Knot wrote: This is unprecedented. The owners are assholes. Courts don't do anything fast. In that case couldn't the Dodgers just deny Betts his FA-gency no matter what his service time adds up to? I mean sure, the Rules say that you can be a FA after six years but the clubs might just unilaterally negate that. they do this all the time. Not usually to the stars, but not bring up guys to start the season is basically "we're keeping you an extra year" Or they'll declare it the 2020-2021 season and manipulate it somehow.Or maybe they'll just screw the minor leaguers more.
  8. you used the words Bob Nightengale and journalist in the same sentence. well, i guess it's true, in the same way my 5 year old is a journalist, as she owns a journal. This is unprecedented. The owners are assholes. Courts don't do anything fast.
  9. I could see, particularly the Dodgers, try to claim 2020 doesn't exist if they don't play, and that say Mookie Betts is NOT a free agent. While the players argue the opposite.
  10. COVID-19 is the disease. If a mutated SARS-CoV-2 continues to cause the same, or similar, symptoms, it'll probably still be COVID-19. Found it - see the bottom of the article: https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-losing-its-lethality-in-italy-according-to-doctors-2020-6https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-losing-its-lethality-in-italy-according-to-doctors-2020-6 Later seems to agree with what I said, though the genome itself may change slightly (which may mean the antibodies that work best against it may change, similar to the flu) the virus and the disease itself are the same.

  12. Benjamin Grimm wrote: The first wave is receding. It's way too early to spike the ball, but the numbers are in decline. Not in every area, but in most of the areas that had been hardest hit. we've all been inside, allowing the hospitals to catch up. That's hardly the same thing. Like if a huge real wave came and flooded the beach. We've got most of the people out of the water and fewer and fewer drownings, but if everyone starts going back on the beach..
  13. i like how people talk about a 'second wave' like the first one's receding.
  14. the expanded playoffs is just something they both want that has to be negotiated. 2 years is simply the terms until the next CBA. I don't think it really matters what the owners are 'claiming' about revenues, since literally everyone knows it's a lie. It's just a thing they say to try to swing the negotiation more in their favor. It's funny that they're cramming in games as the players constantly negotiate for more off days. But I guess they're probably expecting a push back to 82 or whatever. The schedule is complicated, you can't keep just saying numbers!
  15. Mets have the whole broadcast. they should air it instead of '86 WS for the 700th time this wee.k
  16. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Has anyone explained why the Mets operate at "a major loss"? It's not still the Madoff thing. And it's not the Bobby Bonilla thing. short answer: "it's a lie." longer answer: creative accounting, mostly. Counting loans against the stadium as deficit, while not counting name rights as revenue, that sort of thing. Only a direct 'tickets sold against payroll' type calculation. It's how you cry poor and beg players to take pay cuts.
  17. it only opened in 2004? that surprises me. Always thought it was a place collecting baseball minutia for decades.
  18. I mean, it's Martino so grain of salt, but it does make sense that the public negotiation isn't the actual negotiation.
  19. =ashie62 post_id=37452 time=1590531285 user_id=90] . What would happen if a player has deferred payments coming and his team goes bankrupt?
  20. What is this two months stuff? He's on the hook for the whole lease term if the landlord cant find a replacement tenant. Because you can't whine to the media that Syndergaard didn't pay if he's offered you two months and those two months haven't expired yet. What if it got rented? Then you look even worse. They asked for 80k+ on 4/17. If Thor is not lying about offering the 54k they're bickering over a month's rent. A MONTH. They claim he owes three, he offered two, so they sued for the whole amount + lawyer fees. Because they know he has it. How is that not money-hungry and greedy? Also, if you send a letter saying "you owe us 80k" do you have the legal standing to then demand 250?
  21. Lefty Specialist wrote: You signed a lease, you pay the rent until the lease is up. If you can't use the apartment, then try negotiating with the landlord for a reduced rent while he has a chance to re-rent it. This should be done quietly, but I get the feeling Noah was being a bit of a dick about it. I saw Noah a few times walking around in Soho, in the Before Times. So he had to have a place nearby. Noah made his offer two months ago, and suddenly now when (PANDEMIC!) they couldn't rent the place and risk a month of vacancy if they accept his money, suddenly it comes out. It's not Thor being a dick here. He didn't say anything until he was dragged through the coals over a very normal process of negotiation. Sure, he's legally obligated to the contract, and I don't know if he told the group to fuck off when they didn't take the two months or when they came a-calling again and he just ignored it or what. Keep in mind he offered two months and this leaked like 1 day into the third month. This was surgical by the landlords. dick move. So yeah, I'm firmly on Thor's "side" here, and hope he wins at least a reduced rate.
  22. we'll see. If it was me and not Thor, and there was no pandemic, there's a huge chance the company (because it's a company, of course it's a company. it ain't some little old lady who's just happened to own the building forever) just takes the money and tries to rent it out. This stuff is common place, hell I've done it. I don't remember the exact details but I lived in an apartment complex and begged out of my lease early when I bought a house. They accepted and we moved on. And then they yelled at me when I kept parking there to use the train. oops.
  23. =batmagadanleadoff post_id=37335 time=1590422487 user_id=68] I think what's called for is a two or three trillion dollar tax cut where 83% of the benefits go to the richest one percent. I wonder which scumbag political party that won't pass more stimulus for ordinary folks struggling in this pandemic passed that tax cut? Because poor folks and regular folks never get screwed a zillion times over. Oh, those poor, poor rich people.
  24. probably. this is a country run by and for rich people, and if you own a building like that, you're almost without a doubt in the 1%. no doubt. Damon is Co-President of ATCO, a family of real estate companies. He oversees the company's operations and accounting departments, as well as its capital raising and acquisitions programs, ATCO City Center Retail Estate (ACCRE). But at least he's an anti-trump democrat, so there's that. (I have no idea if he's in charge of having his company sue Thor for more than the total cost of the contract)
