  1. yeah, did some reading this morning. I've heard the 'not if a run scores' thing before but it doesn't appear to be accurate. It does have to be 9 innings, and that rule was changed in 1991. It may be related, the idea being that if you pitch a complete game no-hit 8IP loss and give up a run you don't get the no-hitter. I don't care if they change it. The accuracy of the bookkeeping is important, and they're gonna be pretty damn positive he would've been out through normal effort if they change it.

Later That'd be really weird. It doesn't matter now anyway though. I didn't think you could get a no-hitter when you let a run score? (I always figured that's how the Mets would get theirs..and maybe lose to boot)
  3. I just thought this was interesting. Mike Groppuso created a twitter account and only has one tweet: to Dave Hudgens Mike Groppuso ?@mgropjr @dmhudgens Hey Hudge. Its Mike Groppuso trying to reaching out to you. First time twitter so l dont know if l did this right.

  5. Funny, winning one of three from them is starting to feel like an accomplishment. Hopefully they've cooled off by mid-July, post-ASG, the next time the Mets face them.
  6. gimme a 3 run win tomorrow!

I know it's best for us the the Skanks win but I just can't bring myself to do it. Braves have left all kinds of runners on all night and the Yanx are leading on, what else, a 2R HR. Too early for that. Mets can pass the Braves by beating them head to head, let the Yankees lose, we don't need their help.
  8. you may enjoy this post on facebook. Evidently no one in Omaha has ever heard of SUNY Stony Brook (who made it unexpectedly into the College World Series). Omahans are are rooting for them as the underdogs, or Cinderella story. Stony Brook T-shirts are suddenly a hot commodity in the midwest. Bizarre.
  9. Vic Sage wrote: but you don't get to swap him out for a mythical Acosta from the past; you get to swap him out for the Schwinden (12.86 era) and Elvin Ramirez (10.80 era) that replaced him. There's always a guy at the back of the pen who sucks, on every team with a negative run differential. that doesn't mean much to me. Elvin Ramirez is better than that and Schwinden threw...what, 1 inning? (And they're still better. That's how bad Manny was) but that's not the point. The data was created with Manny Acosta as an input. He's no longer 'putting. Therefore it's hard to say the Mets will suck because run differential says so, when a big reason for that is gone. If you want to tell me the guy that gets Acosta's innings will suck, well sure, that's a possibility. I disagree though, I think Ramirez is good, I think Mejia and Beato are pretty good as well. Acosta was on pace to give up like 60 more runs. That's a lot.

  11. How would you characterize the balance between sales messages/promotional content and entertainment content in the Citi Field scoreboard presentation? More entertainment than promotional content Equal amounts of entertainment and promotional content More promotion than entertainment content Don't know/ N/A http://mets.survey-mlb.com/se.ashx

I remember thinking it during the second game of the NLDS how there wasn't nearly as much silly mid-inning stuff. Obviously they still did all the PA "Let's Go Mets!" stuff but it was definitely a different atmosphere/experience than the regular season. I believe that MLB takes over all the in-game promotion, etc. for the postseason. What that exactly means, I don't know. You'd think that'd make it worse right? But it didn't feel that way. I guess it means more generic stuff versus "Uncle Jack's Steakhouse" giveaways via pizza passes and Mets trivia giveaways. Fox highlights of the other games. etc.

I think Wright for sure, and Dickey and possibly Santana. unless we get our act together/vote I'm not sure anyone else gets in besides those.

    Muffy

Right when I thought he was about to start getting hot and maybe running into one or two he went into a slump and now looks particularly ordinary. He's a big part of why they're slumping right now. His defense is probably right where I expected it. He plays (clearly just what my eyes are seeing here) maybe 6 games okay, 1 game he plays really well, 1 game he makes a small blunder or miscue, and 1 game is a disaster out of every 10. If this is 'rock bottom' for his hitting, than he's fine. If he's going to hover around this level, he's probably a liability.
  15. I wrote about this some yesterday. http://www.ceetar.com/optimisticmetsfan/2012/06/12/run-differential-and-the-mets/ The Mets are now +10 swapping Acosta for a 2011 version of Acosta. 53:39 over the last 11 games has them at what should be a .637 winning percentage, or 7-4 when they're actually 5-6. swapping out Acosta (which I do to make the point that Acosta will not continue giving up runs at the rate that he did by virtue of either improving or not being here) gives the Mets a Pythagorean record of 32-30 which is actually only one game worse than the 33-29 they're at.
  16. well quality of broadcast plays in too I imagine. It's not like the Polo Grounds had a high quality crowd mics under every row of seats. Or the extra cameras with a resolution good enough to zoom in on the nervous guy in the upper deck chewing on his hat to demonstrate the tension. I know it's a pretty small sample, but my impressions of the 2006 playoffs were that a lot of this stuff WAS toned down. I remember thinking it during the second game of the NLDS how there wasn't nearly as much silly mid-inning stuff. Obviously they still did all the PA "Let's Go Mets!" stuff but it was definitely a different atmosphere/experience than the regular season.
  17. also, on the Russo thing, the 1950s sports fan was a much different beast. They watched games differently, just culturally. Even just wearing mets stuff to games for instance. It seems to me that fans in those days were a little more formal in their watching of sports. Whereas nowadays its a more casual atmosphere. hmm. I wonder if this is somewhat related to dress codes in general. I know some people seem upset when people wear less formal attire to Broadway plays. Is it because sports are clearly the #1 entertainment destination, and back in the day maybe Broadway/Opera/etc was more of the prototype for dress/behavior at an entertainment venue?

I believe there is a portion of the public who have never experienced a game without the noise and one would suddenly feel the game was lacking something if it weren't there. well yeah, that's me. At least, I don't remember a time before all the noise and stuff. But would I actually..miss it? I probably would..but not in a bad way. Take the hockey example for instance, the 13 seconds of noise until the faceoff. LIke it or not, I've been conditioned to know that the silence means the game started again. Same with the between innings stuff. When it stops, it means I should stop looking at the out of town scoreboard, the vendor pouring beer, or the hot girl in the next section and pay attention to the game again. (granted the "Now batting: " should do that at a baseball game) I wonder if there are other things so ingrained at this point that I'd miss, even if I'd be glad they were gone?
  19. Frayed Knot wrote: The "throwback" idea is great. The only problem they may run into is that so many people (in virtually all sports and all stadiums) have been conditioned to expect and accept ear-splitting volume and every interlude of more that six seconds to be filled with some sort of "entertainment" that you run the risk of having at least a portion of the audience interpret those interludes as translating into a game that's 'flat' or 'dull'. You think so? I know my wife notices some of that stuff but I'm not sure she'd miss it if it was replaced with organ music. Have we been conditioned to expect that or have stadiums/arenas been conditioned to think that we expect/want that and we don't actually care? (Actually, I've never thought it was at ear-splitting volumes, and I'm usually sensitive to that)

  21. I should print a page of the forum and get Gary to sign it on Friday then!
  22. I wonder how much quieter they can really make it. (LFL can't always see the scoreboard either though) I guess they can mostly mute the mics on that level, but it's not like the surrounding areas are far away. I'll be at Friday's game as well. I'm not staying for the concert. I have no idea what REO Speedwagon even sounds like.
  23. cool on the organ music, although I feel like they ask that a lot. I'm curious though, can they not just add more organ music anyway? Do the amount of PA announcements and between inning ads/games/giveaways just take up too much of the time?

No, but, assuming the stat you're reading denotes DPs that said player is involved in, the 1st baseman gets "credit" for being in on most of the DPs his team turns whereas the guy on the other side of the diamond only gets in on it for those around the horn jobs (that sounds dirty) plus the odd line-drive DP. geeze, good point. where's my head at this morning?
