Meanwhile, Terry goes with the righty lineup, + Kirk. #Mets Fri. lineup vs. Chicago: Tejada-SS, Cedeno-2B, Wright-3B, Hairston-LF, Duda-RF, Turner-1B, Nickeas-C, Nieuwenhuis-CF, Santana-LHP

If teams want to reframe their names in the cause of Latino outreach, I think it would be more poetic and meaningful and substantial and exciting for teams to market themselves under actual translations rather than misbegotten mixed constructions like "Los Red Sox." Right, not what others call you. I think it loses something in translation. The Islanders are not residents of an island. The Mets are not a densely populated city. The Cubs are not actually baby bears. It transcends language. They've built an identity attached to the one name.

To get to 89 wins, which is probably what they need to get in, they would have to win 52 of 78, exactly .667, or a 108 win pace. That's not a hot streak, but half a season at the same pace as the 1986 Mets. They need to be better than they have been in the past five years - way better, with one exception - over three full months to reach the probable lowest number of wins to get into the playoffs. They're dead. yeah but..they can influence that 89 win target by how they play against the team they're chasing. Granted it was only a .500 start in 2007, but they played at .608 the second half. But they complemented that with 9 wins against the Mets. Even just 8 doesn't get them in. If they didn't play the Mets at all chances are the Mets don't lose 9 and probably win a slightly higher number that keeps them out.

I've had Spanish-speaking folks calling me Eduardo and Irish folks call me Eamon. Folks in the country of the internet call me Edgy. It's all good. Also, you know what they call a Quarter Pounder with Cheese in Paris? Sure, but that's not your name. When I was little, my mother got annoyed when people called me Mike. "That's not his name!" And it's not. What do they call a Big Mac?

It's Ryan Howard they need to bank on. I don't see Victorino or Rollins doing much improving beyond say offsetting Ruiz coming back down to earth. There was no way the pitching was going to be what it was last year, and even if Lee has a good second half and Halladay returns to be Halladay, they'll have less offense and won't be able to make up that ground. Halladay/starting pitching is FAR more important than Howard, or any offensive improvement; this team won the last two division crowns with little-to-no consistent offense. And the other two things I mentioned are more like fat-middle-of-the-bell-curve possibilities than longshots; with a shouting-distance-of-league-average 'pen and starting pitching approaching last year, this team could be well-poised to take advantage of, say, August National doldrums. Rollins is .005 off his OPS from last year. The last time he had an OPS higher was 2008. There's no hot st reak coming. Even if it all came together and they played at last year's level (career low ERA for ALL of their pitchers) they'd still fall short of the Mets and Nationals pace so far. And they won't. A lot went right last year for them. I'm not sure who we're expecting to be league-average reliever of that bunch.

Howard probably gets activated during the series, but maybe not by tonight. oh, i left out that I voted 'not dead'. They're in ICU and could certainly make a full recovery, I just don't believe it's going to happen. They're certainly less dead for the Wild Card as well.
  8. Edgy DC wrote: No. Bad karma is patriotic hats forced on us by MLB and Sunday nights on ESPN. I just wish the Mets billed themselves as "Los Metros" in Spanish. "Los Mets" sounds dumb, though not as dumb as, say, "Los Suns." Let's work with an actual translation. "Los Cowboys" = bad "Los Vacqueros" = good "Los Islanders" = bad "Los Isleos" = good but they are proper nouns. You wouldn't say Henry was Enrique when he's over the border. His given name is still Henry. You can't buy a Manzana iPod in Spain. I think the entire concept of wearing a different jersey is silly anyway, but losmets.com seems cooler than like espaol.mets.com It's about creating a spanish presense of Mets. adding the article is a tiny part of a marketing presence towards spanish speaking fans.

This coming from the Willie Randolph lover -- the jackass manager who, despite having the most lethal middle of the order in all of baseball, would serial sac bunt right before Beltran, Wright and Delgado were due up. In the first inning. Every. Single. Game. not true, and not true.
  12. I wouldn't have sac'd there. I never agree with giving away outs in the bottom of the 9th like that. Guess you could've tried to bunt Kirk too.. that was fun. even Torres hobbled out of the dugout (and hell, if you can tell he's hobbled just getting out of the dugout to get to the pile, that's not good) to celebrate.
  13. Edgy DC wrote: So much for disabled Nieuie. Torres is hurt and DL bound now instead it seems like. If you're naturally right-handed and can physically swing a bat, report to Flushing.
  14. Tejada-SS, Murphy-2B, Wright-3B, Hairston-LF, Duda-RF, Davis-1B, Thole-C, Nieuwenhuis-CF, Dickey-RHP
  15. Jon Niese currently has a higher batting average than Ike Davis, Andres Torres, and Mike Nickeas.

  17. *checks* Lee's not bad, but he hasn't really been Carlos Lee since like 2009. His power's been steadily dropping off and that it's Houston, which is a friendlier park than the technicolor dreamcoat.

Gary mentioned yesterday that only one team has been as far out as the Phillies are on July 4th and won the division. (you should be able to guess the team)
  19. Swan Swan H wrote: Everywhere but behind the plate, but this is the logical game for Nickeas, considering it's a day game after night game, 90+ degrees, and Dickey going tomorrow night. Josh is young, day off Monday, Niese is hitting better than Nickeas, only six games before a break, I'd say just go for 6 with Thole but I guess Lee plays in too.

  21. http://www.milb.com/multimedia/vpp.jsp?content_id=22815867 Valdespin (taxi squad today) hit a walk-off infield single last night, and then continued to run into left field while being chased by his teammates.
  22. Edgy DC wrote: The people outside dont know what kind of guy this guy is. He made one mistake. --- Josh Thole on whether there should be a problem with Francisco Rodriguez return. I appreciate Thole being a good union man and not talking trash about a potential teammate and all, but wasn't it more like five incidents in Rodriguez's brief tenure with the Mets, including altercations with coaches, teammates, and opponents? Just one mistake he got arrested and prosecuted for is more like it. and some of those coaches and teammates(teammates?) are still here and we don't make a big deal out of it right? Takes two to fight. He was a 'good soldier' last year wasn't he? It's not like he left on a bad note.

  24. i'm only halfway annoyed that these teams we're chasing are coordinating winning streaks with us. (to be fair, they seem to coordinate the losing streaks too). Keeps seeming like the mets play well, but only gain like 1 game.
  25. Good game. the Phillies were pathetic all around, and ultimately it ended up being a fairly boring game, boringly awesome though. Ruiz hit a home run (so much for my fly balls will become outs theory. ) so that shed all hopes of a shutout. Mets scored but ran into some outs, but quickly made sure that didn't hurt them. Crowd was a record crowd, but sucked for the most part. random wave in the 5th. stopped clapping for two strikes when the PA stopped (umm..why'd you think we were clapping? morons..) Couple of Phillies groups but they didn't really have much to get excited about. Daniel Murphy had two chances at a cycle, but didn't get it. added 2 more RBI on a double though. Mets win! David Wright got MVP chants after his home run and during his next AB. halfway through seems to be a good point to start that. Was tracking him and Ruiz all night because I'm silly like that. Maybe he'll pass him one of these games. Then we got all fireworky. The theme was 5 decades as it's been all year. they played mets highlights from each decade and then a couple of minutes of explosions set to short clips of popular songs from that decade. Last bit was the Johan No Hitter. I tried to get some pics of it but it was too bright and my viewing angle was bad. The moon was up there but mostly obscured. I enjoyed the fireworks this year, thought they stepped it up a bit, but my wife disagreed and was annoyed that they didn't jive with the music at all.
