  1. I turned down tickets to tonights game. The rest of my world has made the Mets look competent though. i should've gone.
  2. on the other hand, like I need another excuse to go to Vegas?
  3. Zvon wrote: So when David Wright hurt his thumb early this year, the Mets went public with an intimidation campaign. Wright, fortunately, managed to play through it and thrive. But what that ultimately did for the team's relationship with Wright isn't clear. What campaign was this? no idea. David Wright also didn't "hurt his thumb" he fractured one of his..ring? fingers. And was pretty adamant about staying in, from what I recall. he missed two day and kept insisting he was going to play whereas the 'campaign' from the beat writers was that he was definitely going to be on the DL. the on the same page-ness and open dialogue that must have happened for him to talk his way into the lineup and finding a way to make it work seems like it would help, not hurt, the relationship.
  4. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: It hurts after last night's throwing session. Having an MRI, won't start Thursday, Rubin citing "Rumblings," sez Mejia will get the call. This bad back/bad ankle stuff is starting to reek of pandering to the public perception of what they should do. They probably should've shut him down after the Cubs game (and drilled Reed Johnson). Did he hurt the back compensation for not fully landing on the hurt ankle?
  5. Even the '62 team had a 9-3 stretch (although it only sorta swept the Cubs in that span. 2 game home stand after a win in Chicago a week earlier. Actually, they were off Monday, won in Chicago tuesday, and then were off Wednesday/thursday? Did they make up those games Cub home games at Shea?
  6. Vic Sage wrote: i have no illusions about Jeter being denied 1st ballot HOF status 5 years after he retires (unless some damning personal facts come to light). But is he an all-time great, or more of an accumulator who benefited from the luck of hitting atop a high scoring (high priced) lineup for a very long time, without loss of skills or significant time to injury? What are the arguments against, if any? Just his deficit in the Black Ink test, and his overrated defense? None that would keep him out. (although he certainly won't be unanimous, like I know someone somewhere suggested) But no MVP (though maybe deserved one?), never the best SS in the league (or really his own team..although that never seems to count for much. He gets credit for still playing SS even though clearly the right baseball move was probably to move him. But even the logical fallacies in his game are often glossed over and the narrative grants him so many intangible points. The media loves him because the things he's bad at (like the defense) aren't that clearly measurable and he gives them just enough nothing to placate their columns so that when he runs away and avoids questions they have enough that they don't speculate.

Even in an optomistic moment like this, they can only take one from the Braves? Shame on you! Go for it! Later oh, they'll take the series, but they'll lose the middle game on a Tommy Hanson (Cousin of the band) 3-hit gem.
  8. metirish wrote: Whoa, who voted 7? Let's see, Vic Sage?.....doubt it gotta be Ceetar. :-D It'll probably be the "can't trust what happens in September" variety. Duda will blast some home runs, David will be hot again. Murphy will even poke a couple over the wall. The Mets will score 60 runs over those 7 games (and allow 32 (8 by Manny Acosta)) It'll be the last two games against Miami at home, a sweep of the Pirates trying to clinch, and the first game against the Braves on the road.
  9. Edgy DC wrote: Most optimistic Ceetar statement ever. I mean, it's true, but it doesn't feel true. here's a negative one for you to balance it. I leave for Amsterdam on 9/13. The Mets have 21 games. The Giants open the season on the 12th. Do the Giants score more points before I leave?
  10. TransMonk wrote: My 5 for 5 comment was mostly self-serving as I'm rooting for him to break the record in Milwaukee while I'm in attendance. Step it up, Wright. I've been rooting for before 9/13. starting to look unlikely.
  11. TransMonk wrote: He's still on pace for 2012. 09/19/12 at home vs. Philly. Although the date is getting later and later. If he continues to fall off the pace, he puts breaking the record in 2012 in jeopardy. or gets some rest days or something. But he's been slumping, presumably he won't continue to do that all season, being he's awesome and all. :-D
  12. Mets Willets Point wrote: It looks like a 20-win season is not going to happen. He's got 8 more starts probably. 5/8 isn't unreasonable. It's not like the Mets are forever going to score 1-2 runs a game.
  13. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: He was trying to win a footrace to the bag, it wasn't the dumbest thing ever. Credit to whoeverthefuck was playing first base for them, it was nicely executed defensively. Of the 9 names in the Colorado column on the scoreboard last night, I knew the first name of only one of them -- Dexter Fowler. Their pitcher was wearing No. 6. That's pretty weird. I'm trying to eat less so eschewed the new steak sandwich, the pulled pork, the Shackburger, etc and settled for a Shake-Cago Dog (and fries, and 3 beers, and popcorn. Oh well, I tried). The point is, the dog was pretty good. The Mets fucking suck. yeah, love the Shack-Cago dog.
  14. Edgy DC wrote: Playing independent minor league ball your late forties and coaching in the bigs in your late forties aren't that similar. the concept of getting a cameo in MLB to delay/extend your Hall of Fame eligibility is eerily similar though.
  15. also unrelated, Jeter apparently has had a cough for two months but refuses to talk about it. And this is magically okay or something. Oh, i'm fine, it's just a cough. I'm not going to talk about it. go away. Edgy DC wrote: Ceetar wrote: people said the same thing about McGuire's hitting coach role last year and Tony La Russa was going to pinch hit him in September. I don't remember anyone saying that here. no, maybe not. But the sentiment was out there. I was merely noting the somewhat similar situation.
  16. people said the same thing about McGuire's hitting coach role last year and Tony La Russa was going to pinch hit him in September. But I think McGuire is a perfect example of why it's stupid. they're not going to all leave him off so that he drops off the ballot. the worst that happens is he gets kicked forward to next year. of course, his chemically-enhanced ego may not permit him to accept a non first-ballot election to the Hall. if he's successful at 50 aren't rumors about PEDs just going to have more fuel? Is there a drug testing policy in this league?

I wonder whether the fucker's taking an outside shot at postponing his HoF ballot introduction. Actually, I outright suspect it. That rule about Professional baseball is no longer in affect for HOF ballot inclusion, it's just MLB. yeah, Henderson played some afterwards right? This is going to be a fun class coming up, full of drama and moralizing and name calling.
  18. Finally going to trade in the tickets from the Tom Seaver bobblehead rainout. (the whole concept of not being able to trade in tickets I bought online anywhere but in person.. odd..) for the Mike Piazza bobblehead game Saturday. This could be my last trip to Citi. Only one more homestand I'll be in the country for after that.

Touch to time precisely and you're pretty much doomed to go tumbling past the bag. Your legs are moving so much faster than your upper body, so unless you're physically propelling your upper body with the push off, it's just not going to work. regardless, freaking run through the damn bag. EVERYONE knows this. Or if you're carrying yeyo in your back pocket. save it for the Melky thread. ;-)
  20. hell, I'm pretty much going to accuse everyone of steroids if Piazza doesn't get into the Hall next year.

You looked flashy Valde, and I'm sure that was your only concern, but you just cost us a run son. A BIG run. I concur with a hearty booo0000OOO! and Edgin's poor fielding/decisions was part of giving up one. fundies and what not. and now Rauch figures he's due to give one up.

Taken together with the shit baserunning/Teufel calls... the stuff you can tie most directly to coaching-- outside of plate selectivity earlier this year-- has been pretty uniformly shitty, hasn't it? oh, indeed. the "Lucas Duda never scores from first on doubles" thing wasn't just his speed or timidness. And it wasn't just Duda.
