In it they were giving the upcoming schedule of Jeterian "lasts" (cuz, you know, it's all about him): last home game, last game in his native state of Michigan, last game at Fenway, etc. In the rundown they included the date of this year's All-Star Game as another Jeter-last. I wasn't aware that the rosters had been set for that game yet. We all know Jeter was starting that game at SS even if he is batting .200. fuck that, it's a ballot. With plenty of concentrated voting against him we can keep him from starting.

  3. I tend to poo-poo lefty/righty stuff a bit, so I'm okay with leaving Germen in, but I feel like Collins goes to the lefty there 18/19 times and that's basically why. As good as Germen's been lately, I don't know that he's earned the trust to go after lefties in tight games? But the 9th? I definitely would've pinch run. I don't know that I would've done Kirk though, because of the weak hitters coming up. I'm always tempted to use a pitcher in those situations. Maybe Colon? Omar is crap anyway so I don't think there's any situation you can credit putting him in, but I wonder if Terry was thinking about the possibility of Cishek and getting the lefty in there, or if it was all just about getting Germen the second inning. That probably means he'd already determined Germen was going to face the lefties. But, LolMarlins. they're now 2-11 against the NL East and 1-9 on the road.
  4. Bobby Valentine Pine tar? Rosin is the form of pine tar that does Not stay on the ball and does Not affect the flight of the ball!! Cheat better? Lie better? I don't get it. Rule also says it needs to be on the ball!! Let's get it right! Btw. The reason a bat can not have pine tar on the hitting surface, remember George Brett, is the tar would be on the ball when hit and it becomes a dangerous situation

  6. Edgy MD wrote: Ceetar wrote: "Blah blah blah, they disagreed with me and didn't let me make decisions and went with a different guy. Those bastards." I would be loathe characterize his quotes that way. We probably shouldn't be characterizing out of context quotes in any way at all.

  8. I think there are a lot of us that would rather see less '86, more '99*. Get me some Ordonez, or Rick Reed, Glendon Rusch or Brian McRae.
  9. Me, I think this is the make-or-break series, coming up. Mark my words: we will know for sure by Sunday evening whether or not David Wright is headed somewhere else this year. This is both hilarious and true. Who here doesn't expect the Marlins to completely fuck us up this weekend? Yeah, the air could come out of the balloon real quick. Would just be so nice to end the home stand on a high note and shake some of the 'Mets can't play well at home' stuff that has been haunting them. Hey, they're 6-4 at home when I'm not there.
  10. Edgy MD wrote: The thing with the Marlins is that both times they violently remade their team in the past, the fruits blossomed much faster than prophesied. A rebuilding Marlins team is always a good longshot bet to suddenly turn into the division's powerhouse. Drafting high-talent guys and rushing them to the big leagues can do that. I'm putting that on last year for the most part though, I think this year the Mets figure them out a little more, have scouted them a little more, and sweep 'em this weekend.
  11. Frayed Knot wrote: SNY will obviously be trying out replacements as the season goes on, particularly as KB works fewer games due to growing outside gigs. Or maybe they've already settled on one, although if they have it's not going too well because I've quickly forgotten each and every one who's subbed in, including the ones just from the last week or two. They've seemed to steer clear of the babe route that many teams like to use, although if it's going to be someone who just gives you the routine junk, it might as well be a hot babe. Yeah, gimme the hot babe over Martino or Eamon ..Maca..something. or whoever else they've tried out so far.
  12. Yankees are expected to win their 10000th game this season. Think anyone's enough of a historian to realize it? And will they make a big deal out of it?
  13. Well, the idea that he showed some flexibility in the era of being married to one closer is nice, although I suspect that has more to do with the fact Farnsworth hasn't had enough time to cement down the role than it does some sort of advanced thinking, "advanced" in this case means: going with the guy who you think might be best TODAY rather than whose "job" it is. I do think Collins will be a little more flexible choosing the 9th inning guy (for now, until/if Valverde has like 3 good appearances in a row and gets re-installed as closer) I'm just worried he's going to base it on something like Chase Utley being 1-9 against Dice-K as if that was meaningful.
  14. Mex17 wrote: . . .that is, if they stay at or slightly above .500 for, say, the next month or so, then I think that Hanrahan and Drew will be on the roster before the All-Star Break. Consistent positive performance will provide the justification to make those moves. I think it'll be more significant than that. And I'm not sure I want to take Drew off his couch, unless they're succeeding in spite of Tejada. Don't get a draft pick if you offer him a QO (which you probably wouldn't unless he scorches it) and he'd need ramp up time which means he won't be ready immediately. There are other guys out there via trade, and that will become available via trade, if this ~14% season sample expands to 40-50%. Bullpen help is the obvious choice, but it's going to depend on what exactly happens between now and then. Chris Young been a bust? get an OF. Starters hurt and Noah and Rafael struggling in Vegas? maybe a veteran SP type.
  15. yeah, you really didn't get this "make it legal" push when other guys have gotten caught. The "Didn't want to hit guys" argument is so stupid too.
  16. Can't really tell in this picture, but I'm pretty sure that's synthetic.
  17. Frayed Knot wrote: I - speaking of the local productions, I've still yet to hear how you guard against the local station (often co-owned by the home team) manipulating replays in order to tilt the evidence for or against a call. If YES (or SNY for that matter) has an angle which hurts the home team they have a definite incentive not to run it until after the decision has been considered, an angle that maybe the other side doesn't have, or maybe the other team isn't even televising that game (we're spoiled here in NY, not all teams show all their games). That's an interesting one. I'd hope they're all in agreement or that MLB has access to those feeds regardless of if SNY airs them, but who really knows? On the uniform camera angle thing, while all parks are different, the diamonds are all identical. It'd be nice to at least have some uniformity in regards to that, though geography might make placing said cameras difficult. Also quality of camera too, and maintenance.
  18. Edgy MD wrote: You know, Colonial days may be the days to experiment with the whole pitcher-batting-eighth thing. Why? I'd think Niese days would be the best day, especially one's that coincide with starting guys like Q.
  19. Edgy MD wrote: It implies a cheating intent. I think umps get leeway here. Well sure. But even the comment doesn't explicitly say you can't have it on your skin. It's just interesting to me how weird the whole thing is. I mean, you have a bag of the stuff on the mound already. I also don't like leaving anything up to umpire discretion. see also: check swing.
  20. You know..I don't think Pineda actually violated rule 8.02. You're allowed to put rosin (i.e. is a solid form of resin obtained from pines and some other plants ) on your hands, just not the ball. Rule 8.02(a) Comment: If at any time the ball hits the rosin bag it is in play. In the case of rain or wet field, the umpire may instruct the pitcher to carry the rosin bag in his hip pocket. A pitcher may use the rosin bag for the purpose of applying rosin to his bare hand or hands. Neither the pitcher nor any other player shall dust the ball with the rosin bag; neither shall the pitcher nor any other player be permitted to apply rosin from the bag to his glove or dust any part of his uniform with the rosin bag. You can put rosin/resin on your hands. Not on the ball, not on your glove. not on your uniform. But your neck? Doesn't say.
  21. If you're an out of state fan, you're more likely to pay attention if your team is good. Also, if you're a baseball fan in general you might want to keep highlights on your facebook feed of the playoff teams, so you might 'like' the Red Sox for the sake of seeing what's going on.
  22. metsmarathon wrote: i like my solution. clamps down on cantankerousness for cantankerousness's sake, while still allowing for the maximum amount of correct calls. and with a more instant review as i also proposed above, the delays would be minimized to the point where the stategery of inserting a game delay is minimized. You probably don't even need dedicated replay officials even. Even just a crappy intern who pushes a button that says 'questionable call' that loads up the call and info for the guys in NY to get a headstart on the guys on the field. Like last night on the play at home. it was probably 30-45 seconds between the play and the umpires putting on the headphones. In that time, they could've seen a replay or two and simply said "yup, he's out" and you're done.
  23. as before, Facebook likes is a stupid way to do this. 15% of Turner Field's zip is Yankees fans. yeah. sure it is.
  24. yeah, the challenge bit was dumb. I wasn't aware umpires couldn't review it on their own before the 7th. It should be like that the whole time. Umpires can call for the review themselves after the 6th inning, otherwise the managers can come out and ask them. none of this challenge stuff. And look, this preserves the 'managers yelling at things' angle. Let them come out and yell for a replay. Sure, some managers might try to abuse it by calling for replays on every play, or on simple plays when their player needs a breather, but that's why the umpires can say no. (THERE's an angle. 5th inning, your pitcher is struggling, gives up a liner to left field. Go out and argue it was a actually caught or something. You get the one challenge anyway, even if it's blatantly stupid. At the very least you get a minute for your pitcher to catch his breath and regroup without having to use a mound visit.)
  25. Frayed Knot wrote: Gary brought up another thing that I worry about with the new replay rules; the whole wondering if the ball was moving inside d'Arnaud's glove thing. That drives me nuts in football and, when people think about what they want replay to do, I guarantee you that none of them were thinking about the type of microscopic evidence like whether the ball was slightly jiggling while in the receiver's arms as he was falling out of bounds or whatever. Now I haven't yet seen or heard about an equivalent call being made so far in MLB, but like everything else in replay, once you open that box it's real tough to limit what you won't consider. You've got the "clean transfer" thing as well. I agree that that stuff is too much. Sometimes I flip on a football game and it feels like I'm watching lawyers argue over a turn of phrase.
