  3. The Yankees game notes would like you to know that John Lannan is 2/5 against Hiroki Kuroda with 1 HR. Kirk Nieuwenhuis 0/3. Omar Quintanilla 1/5.
  4. can I go off on him? I so want to go off on him.
  5. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: I really wish we could start him at short. Second is at least a possibility with him, but that overlooks that Muffy's one of the only guys having a decent year in the whole lineup. Duda. Lagares. (And Wright's year is still decent)

  7. Frayed Knot wrote: The line about swinging on 3-0 pitches being "frowned upon in Aldersons Bases Per Out World" comes off a just another case of a writer treating mis-interpreting the strategy, which itself is often lumped in under the "Moneyball" label, to be about maximizing walks to the exclusion of just about everything else. Rubin touches on the same thing with his comments about Keith not approving of the approach. One of my takeaways from Moneyball is that just because someone is a former player doesn't mean they really have any clue how to build a winner and sometimes just the opposite. It's easy to preach a philosophy when you have/had a talent level that's maybe not present in everyone you're preaching about. Not that i don't value Keith (And moreso Ron)'s opinion on these matters, but there's more than one right way. And on the 3-0 pitch, the Mets philosophy has always been reported as a 'swing at your pitch' type philosophy. Recker got it, swung, and drove it 350 feet. he pulls that just a wee bit more or less and it's a double that can't be reached and a little harder and it's gone. I'll take that swing, on that pitch, in that situation, every single time.

  9. ouch ouch ouch. That Kernan article hurt. I couldn't finish. All I got from that is "I was going to write up Sandy Alderson's thoughts but he didn't speak to the media today so I'm just going to pretend I know his opinions on things and write it anyway."
  10. Edgy MD wrote: It may not come to pass forthwith, but I think Lagares does have power potential. He's got upper-body strength, maybe as much as anybody other than Recker. Clearly that's only one factor in slugging the ball out, but it's there. 9.9% XBH this season so far. Perhaps as he gets more experience, and perhaps selects better pitches?, a couple more actually go out? I'll buy it. Looking though I was wrong about Juan being a contact guy. slightly above league average K rate.
  11. SteveJRogers wrote: metirish wrote: Not much for me to pick at except this There is no Pedro Martinez and Carlos Beltran now because the Mets do not throw around those types of dollars anymore. Granderson...... And in a lot of ways, UNLIKE Martinez and Beltran, the move could be seen as a move done solely to say "SEE! We are acting like a big market franchise!" and very much not a move that should have been made. Yes, but any move that's not signing a future HOFer can be seen as such. You can see the arguments on both sides with Granderson and most people tend to agree with the one that fits their notions of how the Mets are run.

And while they might improve on that as the season wears on--considering that they're dead last in HRs & SLG and 4th in Ks they almost can't NOT improve--they're never going to be GOOD at power with this bunch. That was sorta the rest of my point. If Young/Wright/Granderson/Duda hit more home runs, and they will, most of this is mitigated. It's not crazy top of the league power, but it'd certainly alleviate some of this disaster. And really, the other guys aren't the K guys. Lagares/Tejada/Murphy are more of the contact guys. So as I sorta thought in the offseason, a lot hinges on d'Arnaud. Is he gonna be a high-K/low value contribution this year? Will Flores if they play him instead of Tejada? That honestly might be the difference over the course of the season if they're a frustrating LOB team or an above average offense.
  13. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: The thing is, at Shake Shack, I see a long line and am prepared to deal: Service is actually quite quick given the crowd, and getting on that line I know what I'm in for at any rate. Pat LaFrieda's had almost no line to speak of, just a bunch of pissed off suckers waiting to get what they paid all that money for. Really poor service, and the kind that CitiField officials would assure us we don;t get there. Yes we fucking do. Citi Field officials can talk all they want, they take the money from Aramark and ignore it I suspect. (Or Danny Meyer in this case? or is there an affiliation? who knows) I now have a Shake Shack on the route to work and 10 minutes from home so I no longer worry about it. Also Shake Shack has better visuals to the TVs to see what's going on while you wait. Anyway, I was driving all pissed off about this game and it was going to the 9th down 3 after Valverde pissed away another run and I was sitting in South Jersey in traffic about 75-90 minutes from home after driving all day. So I almost preferred the tie game to the win in the 9th because they got me just about all the way home. I don't know if you guys have been listening but one of the promos Josh and Howie have to read is about some silly Wendy's sandwich in extra innings and they were both getting a little loopy and talking about the cheese and the aioli. So when they're talking about the win Josh drops a "And this time it was a Rueben!" line or something that make me snicker.
  14. Mejia. Don't give up on young talented starters so fast. Just don't. I'll admit to some Schadenfreude here though. Some have been touting Tanaka's undefeated streak (didn't lose last year) and I'd love for him to face off with the undefeated Mejia and lose. Did I see something about Mejia's innings limit recently? If someone was putting that out there, feel like it might be the groundwork for a switch to the bullpen. Personally I think there (should have been?) is a plan in place, at least a guideline, for when deGrom or Montero or even Thor is ready and given health (crosses fingers) that's the perfect time to transition Mejia and preserve his innings.
  15. On a side note, I can't remember a time when I knew less about the Yanqui's bullpen. I mean I recognize names and such but, outside of Robertson, I don't know anything about who's good or what each of them throws, or how they're being used, or anything like that. Looking at their stats it seems like they're doing decently as a group, but it's like they're just an anonymous bunch of interchangeable parts to me to the point where I'll have no sense of the strategic plusses or minuses whenever Girardi makes a pitching change or what we be a good counter-move for Terry. Dellin Betances - the 6' 8" NYC-born righty who the MFY publicity machine hyped up as a coming star a few years back. He's now 26 y/o with 27 innings of ML time under his belt across pieces of three seasons Matt Daley - Just called up to fill C. C.'s spot (but at 6'2"/180 not his pants). Pitched in one game earlier in the season and a few innings last years after spending pieces of three season with Colorado. Shawn Kelly - Always good to see an Italian on the team. This 30 y/o, who went to the Yanx in 2013 after 4 seasons in Seattle, appears to be their main set-up guy these days. Matt Thorton - Their only Lefty out there, he's a 37 y/o 11-year vet who was on the Red Sox last year, so naturally he's the one guy in the pen with the multi-year contract Adam Warren - The other 7th/8th inning set-up-type guy. Preston Clairborne - As LWFS said the other day, he sounds like the guy in your tennis club who cheats on line calls then insists on "air-drying" himself in the locker room. Was also with the Yanx last season though started this year in AAA Scranton. Has pitched in 7 MFY games to date. I always mean to pay more attention but usually don't. I look at the W: L: S: line on the at-bat app and frequently go "wtf is that?" The Yankees are NOT a good team.
  16. Howie and Josh were absolutely beating the strikeout/situational angle to death this weekend. There's some of that. Clearly if you field a power/K team you're going to have some LOB issues but you're also going to have some bloop-blast situations too on the other side where you get two quick hits and two quick runs instead of a single a stolen base, an infield ground out, and a sac fly. It's just that right now those hits aren't quite coming. Wright's not hitting it over the wall, Granderson started way slowly and while he's better, he isn't smoking it either. C. Young..well, he's shown some power and he's had less time. I feel bad discrediting him right now at the depths of the slump the same way I feel like I don't want to overcredit Murphy's team-leading fWAR and 800+ OPS at the height of a hot streak. Lagares is fine but not a power hitter, Eric Young is a great pinch runner or a guy to pinch-hit in one of those obvious contact spots but otherwise he gives you nothing. Tejada, who at least isn't making out at a league-average rate (don't discount the value of a walk in those high-leverage situations as solely quoting average will do). But the weather will heat up and those guys WILL hit there home runs. Sometime soon, we'll be down 3-2 in the 8th with first and third and one out and anti-Kers will be clamoring for 'just make contact' and Granderson will pop one and we'll win 5-3. It might even be tonight.

I'm telling you, "' 'Sign' this stupid made-for-social-media thing which then gets launched from your account out to your friends" is absolutely the current wave of marketing. Sure, but you didn't get in a contest for two tickets to the state of the union address or anything for that did you? I still don't get why a silly over-enthusiastic contest is getting so much coverage. Especially by media guys who are going to spend the next four days with their own interpretation of "real New Yorker/real New York Team" etc. I suspect the desire for more brand loyalty is formed out of companies increasing need to separate themselves from their competitors when they generally just blend in. Watch NBC or Fox? how about I DVR whatever and watch the best shows? Post or the Daily News? How about I just read the articles that interest me from each online? Toyota or Ford? How about I read reviews and focus on the features that _I_ prioritize and make an informed decision? Of course, companies seem not to reward loyalty anyway. My 'loyalty' rate for car insurance was still more than switching. Fios and Optimum give you gifts for signing up new, but nothing for sticking with them. Most of the cellphone companies discount the phone ($400+ off) if you re-commit to a new contract, but the 'loyalty' reward for Verizon is $50 for the primary phone on the account towards a new phone. I'm subjected to way more offensive marketing schemes on a daily basis and on SNY commercial breaks than a silly "please say you like us!" call to arms.
  18. Well of course. When someone gets a job over you you're always critical.
  19. If I'm other team's fans, I chant "pro-gress-o" when he's up
  20. Let's try this walkoff thing again Maybe pinch hit Niese

  22. Wasn't the most exciting game to drive to. Radio got fuzzy enough into Maryland that I switched to the Crappy at-bat app. Signal coming in okay in parking lot, but unsure if linthicum heights hotel has radio. Ninth now. Let's get this done.
  23. This is neat. I bet my phone's gonna auto pop-up a travel time Google Now card this evening too.

Would single letters be the highly coveted? or would the A5, A1 etc be? If someone wears A1 you pretty much gotta nickname him 'sauce' right?
