Feel like they've been "almost" there a couple of times. the only negative is them not slapping the Cardinals around in '06.
I reject the notion that I shouldn't hate the Nats or division rivals because I should instead hate the Mets cause they sucked. I actually enjoy my team. Screw 'em all. From #natitude right down to fire sales and lifetime contracts for aging slugging first basemen and overrated familiar outfielders.

Getting beaten by a division rival isn't a reason to hate them, it's a reason to want your own team to get better. uh..isn't it both? that's usually how sports work. Am I supposed to tip my hat to the Nats and be all "oh, it's alright, you guys were just better?" cause, fuck that. it's not like they're playing the Yankees. screw 'em.
Gwreck wrote: I really don't understand all of the hate for the Nationals. They are to me, easily the most benign of our division foes. They have committed no major atrocities towards our fanbase or team, other than winning a disproportionate number of games. I understand the douchebag factor (Werth, Harper) but they've got a long way to go until they are become nearly as loathsome as the Phillies, Braves or Marlins. That said, I'm still rooting for Pittsburgh. Isn't the in-division, douchebag factor, and the idea that they manhandled us this season enough?
Frayed Knot wrote: Except that the Nationals are a MUCH better team right now so that's a huge bridge. Their biggest decision next year is Adam LaRoche. I think the plan all along was to move Zimmerman and his throwing problems over to 1B, but losing LaRoche will be a loss for them and losing Zimmerman isn't an option. They'll also need to figure out 2B. Asdrubal Cabrera was a stop-gap and it's clear they have no faith in Danny Espinosa. But Rendon's a future MVP candidate (hell, he's a current one), Harper was still the youngest regular in the majors, Span turned into the leadoff/CF they needed, and that pitching staff is awesome, young, and all under control. It's a long way to next April. Certainly they're better, but to say they couldn't take a step back for any number of reasons, and that the Mets can't actually beat them occasionally making it even closer?

The good news might be that some of that could (could) happen just by standing still. The bad news is that getting 16 games better is probably a better target. well, all things being equal, sure. But are the Nationals as good? Plus, it's also equally important that some of those 12 wins are also Nationals losses, so that'll bridge that gap too.

While technically he wasn't an All Star this year, his numbers are certainly already on that level, despite the splits. His 136 wRC+ is tied for 10th in the NL. 10th in slugging. 22nd in OBP. 3rd in HR. His 1B and defense hurt him, but tied for 28th in fWAR. That's not only All Star level, that's "get a couple of MVP votes in the 9th or 10th spot" territory.
125 PA isn't nothing, but I do feel like he occasionally was okay. And generally I favor just letting guys play against lefties and get the reps in. At least start that way. You have to figure a veteran bench guy that can play 1B, or LF/1B (Andrew Brown? Soup?) and get the occasional start and PH appearance against the lefty. Mets pinch hitters OPSd .544 and shoring up the bench is one of those possibly overlooked things they can do to improve.

Well it does give the team the first shot at him. But I haven't heard anybody speaking in this regard. Certainly I'd like to have 25 guys with his batting eye. I'm not exactly tabulating it, but I've easily heard half a dozen people float the idea. Certainly, if he can impart his wisdom, I'm all for it. Doesn't always translate to teaching though. I'm just curious if anyone's heard him actively voice this idea.

I imagine it wasn't that they didn't have a beat guy at the show, but rather a question of space and priorities. Even the Harvey angle is a heckuva story that's everywhere this morning. Everywhere but the Times, that is. nah, you routinely see the beat guys tweeting that they're not on the road trip in September. Or they move them to the Yankees beat for it. here: 19 days ago Seth_Everett's avatar Seth Everett @Seth_Everett Hey @TimRohan, there's APB out 4 u in the Mets Radio Booth (@MetsBooth) u haven't been seen since u're story from Vegas & there is concern.
