Though the random people talking politics has pushed into my carefully selected timelines and filters so that's taking some work. Like anything else in life, it's got it's pluses and minuses. It's the public figure working for a very public company thing in this case. That and that this is like the 57th time he's done something along these lines in the last year or three. right, it's not so much that he's saying/sharing abhorrent things, it's that people, the customers, want no part of him. ESPNs barely cares since we're forced to pay them anyway, but he'd doubled down so many times that there was literally no value to ESPN to keep him.
  3. then it'd take us longer to realize Schilling was a raging hateful asshole and he might still be working.
  4. quite a threshhold of stupid stuff shared too.
  5. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: Verrett did what a good swingman is supposed to do, and did it very well. Since his stuff isn't swing-and-miss, batted-ball luck is a big part of it, though, and that wouldn't hold indefinitely. If his control stayed this good, though, he'd have a shot at Colon-izing opposing hitters for a while... and, even in the minors, his control HAS been good. So... I'd at least throw him out there regularly, for anything middle-inning/multi-inning or mid-leverage (sucking up some of those of-late Robles innings)... or dangle him for that midseason addition, while knowing what he should command. .286 BABIP isn't really low/unsustainable though. the 92.9% LOB rate however.. He's got no real velocity either, so yeah you'd expect him not to really miss bats and what not, though he IS getting above average swinging strike percentages so far (Phillies! SSS!) That said, he's an extremely useful cost-controlled piece right now. But you move him back to the pen now, or the minors if you want him as your 6th guy and stretched out. Shop Colon in June/July and don't worry about if you need to use Verrett for a stretch before Wheeler's back. Just maybe try to pitch him more against the Braves and Phillies rather than the Nats and Cubs.

Edgy MD wrote: Chad Ochoseis wrote: I once read an anecdote about Thurman Munson - supposedly, he once deliberately dropped three third strikes in a game, so that he could throw to first to get the outs, enabling him to pass Carlton Fisk for the AL lead in catcher's assists. I don't know if I believe it - whatever Munson's faults, he never seemed to be the kind of guy who cared about individual records - but I know I read it. I think the tale goes that the press notes for the day noted that Carlton Fisk led the league in assists by a catcher. Munson thought this was a pretty arbitrary thing to praise the guy for, so he spent the day undermining the stat, and (I think) gesturing to the press box each time. bet that intern that put together the notes really learned his lesson.
  11. soupcan wrote: This whole issue is ridiculous. Big effin' deal. They sold jerseys! So what? Who cares? It's the media making something out of nothing as usual in order to sell papers. I could not care less. exactly. I'd say on the LolMets thing that it's completely disconnected from the Wilpons. It doens't matter if they do or don't (still) deserve criticism or not, these trash papers are going to spin up silly headlines and/or articles anyway. So, at least to me, defending the team against the stupid media-driven narratives shouldn't be seen as a defense of ownership, or even the team, it's more an attack of a different industry.
  12. hoping it was just jaundice. fits with the timeline. Glad he's getting better.

  14. Centerfield wrote: Edgy MD wrote: I take it back. Jetes caught it a step and a half in fair territory. Exactly. Big difference between "diving into the stands and then making the catch" and "making the catch then diving into the stands". It's like the issue with Jim Edmonds "diving" catches. The order in which they happen matter. Jeter was a terrific player, but things like this are what make his "legacy" irritating. His patented "jump and throw" gets glorified, but imagine if he had ever learned the simple skill of planting and throwing. Amazing how an inability to stop his momentum ends up being a legendary trait. Don't forget how his being horribly out of position to randomly field a relay throw in the playoffs was 'smart thinking'

From that standpoint, looking pretty solid. Only if you think on pace to lose 101 games is "pretty solid". no, I think a season is a lot of ups and downs and if 'down' is 3-5, I'm pretty confident that the ups will wipe the floor with that.
  16. I'm worried bailing on the game last Saturday to stay with the family (Adam LaRoche style!) cost me a short line for the spicy chicken sandwich at Citi.

  19. What also feels like SSS is that there seem to be have been a ton of soft grounders to third. These are HARD plays as they are, and David Wright made them better than just about anyone in his prime. He probably makes one or two more without the stiff back, but most 3B probably don't. I'm pretty sure none of Flores, Campbell, Walker, or anyone else on the team right now makes them. Cabrera or Lagares, maybe. maybe.
  20. Edgy MD wrote: Matthew Cerrone wrote: Congratulations to Jacob, his wife and deBaby. I'm happy for them. That said, I can't for the life of me figure out what the Mets are doing with their roster and bullpen. The bullpen is burned out, it's thrown 12 innings in two days. Verrett is starting tomomorrow, so he can't pitch in relief tonight. Meanwhile, the Mets are already short a guy with deGrom in Florida and not being put on paternity, so they can back date a DL stint. So, instead of calling up, say, Sean Gilmartin, who can be used tonight, the Mets call up Montero, but say he's unavailable. I don't get it. In other words, Noah Syndergaard, it looks like you have to throw a complete game tonight, you have no choice... I hadn't realized that paternity-listing a guy prevents a team from backdating a DL assignment. I guess it prevents a team from using the paternity list as a way of neither fishing nor cutting bait with regard to a DL move, but it's pretty hard to time a childbirth to coincide with a team's need to pull of a shifty move. Also it's freaking April and they've barely played and have another off day on Thursday. They'll manage to get 9 innings out of these guys. Some of these guys have options, so if the Mets really felt pressed hey could just send Robles down for a bit and promote Montero and recall him instantly should deGrom need the DL. It's fine.
  21. we're tying too much to that one home run. There were nearly 100 jerseys on the field that day. That this one object of memorabilia of the hundreds or thousands of items that exist in the Mets possession over the last 15 years found it's way elsewhere is in no way surprising or embarrassing.
  22. if the Mets really think David Wright can't field anymore (it's very very clear he can still hit) they should really push for the DH next season.
  23. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Let's agree that Matz' awful pitching this spring is also a worry. let's give him more than 1 bad inning before we tack on how he looked in meaningless games. I'd give much more credence to long lay offs, first real game, first cold game, and that sorta thing. Also I've long said I don't think the Mets prepare their pitchers well enough in Spring in general, you could tack on Harvey's late-inning fatigue to this category as well, and they made a special point to take it slower this Spring thanks to pitching into November. Probably deGrom's soreness too.
