  1. there's like a 4% chance the bullpen cart wouldn't look like a giant coke can. or maybe Rolaids makes a deal with the league and they're all barely team branded Rolaid's rolls
  2. Of course, Willie floated some of it on his way out too.
  3. There was a lot of complaining about how Omar was making the Mets "too Hispanic". I'm sure that there are references to it (if not examples of it) here in our own archives from 2005 and 2006. ON EDIT: Oops, maybe not. Our archives only go back to June 2005, months after Omar signed Beltran and Pedro. I would imagine that the biggest anti-Hispanic backlash would have been during the 2004-05 offseason. Try May 16th+ 2008. That's when Billy Wagner made the "Ask those guys questions, they speak English, believe me." comments. Which I don't think were racially tinged on Wagner's side, more that "ask the guys that actually played and aren't always standing here after games. They all can answer your questions too" Many saw that as confirmation of a clubhouse divide when really it was Wagner being tired of answering questions about losses he mostly twiddled his thumbs during.
  4. This is one agent's threatening memo, if there were serious and actual discussions it'd come from a different source. The veterans all take off the early spring games after like 2 innings or so and are replaced by minor leaguers not represented by the union.
  5. well, i'm not sure one agency's PR speaks for the entirety of the players, especially since he doesn't even pick the number of actual unioned players and just mentions the 40 man x 30 clubs. (which also excludes the minor leaguers)
  6. I mean, I think they should sign Darvish, i'm less sure about Arrieta. But they're expensive and risky too and we've got a lot of bodies here too.

Don't forget tailgate party first though. I might even have stealth bottles of my 'We didn't get Elvis Andrus' Hefeweizen. (I'm working on the name.)

  10. Frayed Knot wrote: The Mets are going to have to make an Ike/Duda type decision with TdA & Plawecki at some point, but I don't think they're at that point now. Selling either now would be selling low and there's simply not the pressure to do so, nor is there an obvious upgrade candidate sitting out there just waiting for the right deal. maybe. Catcher workload being what it is, it's not as pressing. Maybe this doesn't happen with Gonzalez here, but the idea of putting a catcher at first against lefties occasionally, and the 12ish DH games make it a little less pressing.
  11. Flores is what he is. A lefty masher. he's had his shot. I don't believe in Lagares anymore, but there's still potential he can be useful if he hits more HR, or takes more walks, and still plays elite defense. Nimmo is probably already good. Really the biggest hope of mine is not that Smith and Rosario are great, but that they're not bad. If they can be simply average (and Plaw/d'Aran too) the Mets will have pretty much no holes because the NL one. I think having real weak spots might end up being better for all around run creation.
  12. Lucroy's bad year makes me suspect him anyway. His overall numbers look okay in the limited Coors time, but that's mostly because his swing % dropped and he walk rate doubled. His numbers with Texas last year are more in line with career. I doubt he randomly figured something out in Coors in limited AB. Of course, he K% was down from career in both places. Career high contact%, career low swinging strike rate. I don't know if that's an indication of anything good. Does he just need a change of approach or did he lose the ability to identify the pitches he can make good contact on? in any rate, I don't think the Mets could be fine how they are at C.
  13. much younger, still a lefty. Not on the 40 man. roster space. Could still be useful as a LOOGY if they need him later. Flexibility. why did the Pirates do this?

  15. no. I have little doubt someone thought "what local animal can we pretend to be in a fight?" and get Chippewa.

Sandy got borderline-crap for established major leaguers because the Wilpons needed the other team to take on salary. If the Wilpons ran the team (or were able to run the team) like a team in New York with their own cable channel and a new ballpark they could have focused on the player rather than the trade being a fancy salary dump. Like the Yankees, who, had they simply been willing to pay Bruce's salary, supposedly could've had him, but they preferred to give up better prospects?

I'm curious what you think nicknames are. Why schools have 'fight songs'. It's certainly not a hard and fast rule, plenty of teams choose imagery unrelated to locale and the battle thing. but just saying nice things about the culture you're appropriating doesn't excuse it. all those justifications for Chippewa are the same ones the Redskins are using. the sports/battle thing is so overlapped that it's hard to see any sports team using native American names, especially local ones, as thinking of them as warring savages. And you can't control everything about it, even if you don't use the imagery officially. Hell, the KC Chiefs have a blog called 'Arrowhead Pride'. You'll still get all sorts of Native American related imagery that you can't control, even if you sanitize the official ones.
  18. "tastefully" done or not, it still equates a group of humans to things like Grizzlies, the panthers, the huskies, the fighting iri.. It doesn't erase the racist reasons you adopted the logo/mascot/nickname to begin with. Chippewas is still implying a group of humans is local fauna. And even if you don't use the imagery, it's still pretty much implied by your history of using it.

  20. Nymr83 wrote: Promotions were a big culprit. It also seems like there have been a lot of injuries, particularly pitchers. yeah, it created a gap between the last crop and the next crop. There's a reasonable shot that we'll jump up significantly from 27 next year as guys move up.

  23. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: I'll bet they can reel in Harrison without Zimmo. Harrison wants out of Pittsburgh and Pittsburgh doesn't have that much use for him. It's similar to the Walker situation a few years back. Unless the contenders for him get too frothy I'd bet that Nido and Callahan gets it done. WRITE IT DOWN Nido is Nimmo's best friend though! sad face
  24. teams all do this stuff, so do doctors. What, the initial diagnostic of Beltran was more cautious and less predictive? shocker. no one jumps right into surgery at the first bruise. You're also looking at it from hindsight (the Church concussion thing too) when we know so much more about concussions, brain injuries, and micro-fracture surgeries. This actually re-affirms that a lot of the disagreement with Beltran and the Mets had to do controlling the message.
  25. Davidoff might be on to something. The way they handled Reyes in 2004 is super relevant to 2018. He also randomly ascribed other injuries to meddling or mismanagement with absolutely no sourcing. The only actual sourced information is the idea that it's a pressure cooker, the influenced the decision making stuff is the source's opinion, and the rest is Davidoff spin. The other stuff isn't really news. we kinda knew that the Mets meddled with the PR of injuries, always want to control the message and always put the best spin on things. It's generally super easy to see through, but at least it's consistent. I've never understood why I'm suppose to be mad that they try to downplay the devastation of an injury or are super optimistic about how fast a guy will be back. They're heavily incentivized to do so.
