  1. Well, Yogi made it work for him. He was a terrific hitter, and I'm sure some of the current guys could learn from him. But I seriously doubt that his fishing trips did more damage than Williams's patience.
  2. Williams was only a great hitter, but Yogi was a great clutch hitter? Oh, come on now.
  3. It would be pretty stupid to shun just the ones who happened to get caught. And if there really are hundreds who did the same thing, I guess shunning them all doesn't make much sense either. But I want to know they're guilty before I forgive them.
  4. But he's also suggesting that the drugs may not have made much difference anyway. That may or not be true, but if you take it as your assumption, it's easy to dismiss all the indignation about steroids as so much hot air. But I think there's plenty of reason for real indignation. Hundreds of players cheated. They didn't break the rules, you can't punish them, maybe you can't even really judge them. But we ought to know what they were up to.
  5. I think there's some truth to what Verducci wrote, though, naive as it is. When baseball players finally realized that working out could make you bigger, stronger, and fitter, it changed the game, and that had nothing to do with steroids. The steroids just took it to another level.
  6. I can't go along with an article whose premise is "I don't really care that Alex Rodriguez used steroids." Because I do care that Alex Rodriguez used steroids. Not because I want one more excuse to kick poor Alex around--that's the ridiculous part of this, that he's getting all the abuse that should be spread 104 ways--but because knowing that he did gets us one step closer to knowing what the hell has been going on in baseball since the nineties.
  7. When you get to Z, you have to roll around again to A, right? 1. Samuel 2. Teufel 3. Unser 4. Valentine 5. Wigginton 6. X. Nady 7. Youngblood 8. Zimmer 9. Appier
  8. Yes, the same Jack Fisher. A future Met then, though. Here's the box. http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/BOS/BOS196009280.shtml
  9. Bob Miller and Bob Miller. So which one was it who showed up on the Mets again in the seventies--was that Bob Miller? The two Bobby Joneses were never a problem for me, though.
  10. Yeah, him.
  11. Rico Brogna and that other guy who isn't Rico Brogna.
  12. Rooting for your team after it leaves town is like rooting for your ex-wife. You have to transfer your affections somehow.
  13. I haven't posted here for a long time, because much as I love the Mets, you guys know a lot more about them and have much more interesting things to say about them than I do. And because I'm still recovering from the collapse last year and haven't felt much like talking. I'm posting now just to say that I have to love a place where you can find a whole thread devoted to Ron Swoboda and his semen, including a Jonathan Richman parody devoted to the subject. Keep up the good work, guys.
  14. I say 4: go home first and try for the 3-2-3 double play. It looks like stepping on first cost him a tiny bit of time, just enough to let the run score. And after that I'd say 3: what he did. It damn near worked, and the throw home looked easier than the throw to second.
  15. An instant classic. We've had some memorable games this year, haven't we?
  16. Willets Point wrote: Toronto gets a home game on an American holiday. Good planning. I bet Toronto is playing at Anaheim on Canada Day if they follow the same logic/ Close. Seattle.
  17. Wayne Garrett!
  18. Great escape, but I don't know how long Maine can keep this up.
  19. Right down the middle. What's his beef?
  20. Franco could have switched to shortstop. He's played there as recently as 1987. It seems like only yesterday. When he played a few games at third last year, it was the first time since 1982.
  21. If it wasn't real, it was the greatest piece of gamesmanship in baseball history. I'd respect that as much as his pitching with pain.
  22. The RS/RA ratio went up last night; it's the differential that went down. The overall ratio is close to 2:1, which is insane. Only one team has ever done that for a full season: the 1876 Chicago White Stockings.
  23. Good luck to Felix. The game needs young stars like that.
  24. Do I get extra weenie points if I spell it Schöneweis?
  25. I would have pinch hit.
