  1. if we're going to shop at the discount store for 2b and/or LF, i'd prefer a REALLY cheap option, like DeRosa and Jose Guillen, rather than Lugo and Alou, who we'd have to pay more for but isn't actually any better. That way we can spend money on a Schmidt or similar SPer. And Schmidt is too an ace, when he's healthy enough to pitch. but i agree with CF that this is no time to cut corners.
  2. edgy, duan, dickshot... ditto. i hope my insight has been useful.

The writing seemed pretty lame.Ollie, i agree. I had a hard time with the movie up till the point where they go to the family's island home. At which point i started laughing so consistently, i had to give the film its due.
  4. ]And this is why sabermetrics is so completely bogus. Chuck, you're amazing. I have so many interests in common with you... movies, comics, writing SF, Mets baseball, accumulating facial hair... yet we consistently have vastly different takes on every single topic. for example, your denigration of an entire field of study that attempts to understand baseball from analysis of data (rather than ephemera, anecdote or magical thinking).
  5. the look of joy in my daughter's eyes while attending her first playoff game.
  6. there is no joy in Mudville. All you "glass is half-full" types make me want to kick a puppy. We were the best team in the NL this year. We didn't win the pennant. That sucks.
  7. its the bottom of the 9th. You've got 2 men on and nobody out. So, with 3 outs left in your season, you want to give one of those few precious gems away to employ a 1-run strategy when you're down by 2? you do realize bunting there increases your chances of scoring 1 run, but REDUCES your chances of scoring more than one run... don't you? reasonable people can disagree, but i definitely liked Willie's approach of "the hell with that... I'm sending up a big bopper to win this friggin game". That's the moment he went from WWSB to WWBB.

  9. ]Please, let's not forget one big reason behind this team's success: its chemistry. A Soriano has the potential to disrupt that chemistry. We have to take that into account. he went 40/40 in a pitcher's park. I'd be happy to take that and let Willie worry about the chemistry. Besides, with Delgado, Green, LoDuca, Reyes and Wright, around, i'm not too worried about Soriano getting too out of line. If he's on a winning team, he's unlikely to turn into terrell owens.
  10. nonononononononono. Our offense went up in smoke this post-season partly because Valentin and Chavez were overexposed and returned to the mean, dragging down the whole bottom 1/2 of the lineup. I like Chavez as a 4th OFer, NOT as an everyday corner OFer from whom you need run production. Valentin, too, is unlikely to repeat this season at his age. Floyd has broken down consistently over his career. Now, as an older player, he becomes EXTREMELY unlikely to hold up. I'm sorry, Cliffie, but the bar is closed. Soriano and Cliff (on edit: I mean CARLOS!) Lee are available. Get one of them. Hell, get both of them and put Soriano back at 2b. Our payroll would still be about 60% of the Yankee payroll. Then, even I could pitch for them.
  11. I'll take Carlos Lee or Soriano in LF, and maybe Gil Meche for the rotation.

  13. ="Edgy DC"]Well, let's be honest. It was the wrong move to leave him in to face Rolen. It's not like what Endy did was within the realm of what was considered when he made the choice. Luck is the residue of design, except in that case. actually, i thought it was the wrong move to let Perez hit leadoff the inning before. He'd already given us a solid start, and we needed to get a big inning going. However, since, he'd already decided to give Perez more innings by letting him hit, apparently he wasn't going to lift him the next inning at the first sign of trouble. Which, i think, just compounded the error. but as i said before, i like what he's done overall this post-season, and i'm sorry i gave him such a hard time all year.
  14. Ramon Castro - no. backup catchers are a dime-a-dozen. Endy Chavez - yes. i think he's turned a corner, offensively. He's an excellent 4th OFer. Oliver Perez - yes, absolutely. Duanier Sanchez - yes, i think. he was unhittable 1st half of season. Victor Zambrano - no. lets just bury the past and move on. Dave Williams - maybe. i'm not enamored of him, but if he's cheap enough.
  15. "no" to suppan. happy? 1. _______ 2. Glavine 3. Maine 4. O.Perez 5. El Duque / Pedro (Duque to pen if/when Pedro comes back) If we don't sign a front-line SPer, then everybody moves up one and either Heilman (unlikely) or Bannister is the 5th SPer until Pedro comes back. Wagner Sanchez Heilman Feliciano Mota Bradford D.Oliver If they're only going to spend money on 1 big FA acquisition, at this point i'd prefer they go for a corner OFer or 2bman (soriano?) than any of the available SPers.
  16. i've done a 180 on Willie, this series. I thought he did a great job. He let his hitters hit, and didn't give away outs with 1-run strategies. Unfortunately, the hitters who hit all year stopped hitting (except for Delgado and Green). He didn't have any better options on the bench for Valentin and Chavez, so their lack of production (along with Wright's paralysis) dragged down the bottom 1/2 of the lineup. When Reyes and Beltran hit at the top, we won... when they didn't, we lost. Willie also yanked his starters at the first HINT of trouble. He handled Maine especially well, i thought, and his use of the bullpen (overall, despite some quibbles) was good, too. His faith in Perez was apparently well placed. he stayed positive and focused and the team played well, despite the death of their lumber. Despite my whining all year about the starting pitching, it turned out to be the hitting that was our achilles heal. Valentin and Chavez came back to their career averages at the worst possible time, and the kids played like kids do when their under pressure. Only the Blue Jay contingent stepped up and played with assurance. Next year, we need another bat in the OF (and i don't want us to count on Milledge) and i don't want to rely on another miracle year from Valentin. Okay, Willie. I hereby retire "WWSB" (at least until you have beltran sacrifice bunt in the first inning next year). next year,
  17. you left out option 3: "injuries".
  18. yeah, your right. fuck the Jets, too.
  19. soupcan: "Next time coldcock her." Edgy DC: " Half of me wants to do that." Well, all of me wants to do half of that.
  20. fuck your beards and the chins they grew in on... i'm one bitter dude this morning.
  21. fuck the st. louis cardinals... and while i'm at it, fuck the arizona cardinals, fuck the actual birds, and fuck the actual clergymen (before they fuck your sons). fuck the tigers, fuck baseball, fuck you and fuck me. Do i sound bitter? baseball season is over. Go J-E-T-S, JETS JETS JETS!!!!

    Optimism

We're going to take Carpenter to the woodshed and we'll be into their bullpen by the 4th inning. Maine will give us 5 decent IP and our bullpen will finally outpitch theirs, because water always seeks its own level. i'll take a 7th game at home any time. Its not like they've got another ace to throw out there, either. Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead! Go NADS! Go NADS! Go... oh ... um... LGM!!
  24. yes, with a Cy Young candidate going up against an adequate rookie. You have to live in utter blackness to see the bright side of that matchup.
  25. ScarletKnight41 wrote: I Getting to Game 6 of the NLCS is a moral victory in and of itself.. WTF? The Mets had the best team in the NL this year, with a record of 97-65... 9 games better than SD & LA, and and 14 games better than St.L's 83-78 just-above-.500 record. We were 3rd in Runs/game, 3rd in ERA and 1st in payroll. StL wasn't in the top 5 in any of those categories. And you consider losing the pennant to St.L a moral victory? Well, i consider it an immoral loss. I think we're sunk, and i don't see the sunny upside y'all seem so cheered up by. but thats just me. woo woo, lets go mets. yea.
