Is that Putz' first 1-2-3 inning this year? I cannot recall another one. Top of the order in the bottom of the 10th. LET'S GO METS!

="Edgy DC"]Royals outfielder shoots TV reporter in face with pellet during locker room interview Posted 7/28/2007 12:59 AM | KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) Royals outfielder Emil Brown hit a television reporter near the eye with a pellet from a small plastic gun in the Kansas City clubhouse Friday afternoon. A team spokesman said Brown didn't mean to shoot KMBC sports reporter Karen Kornacki with the plastic pellet gun. Brown started in left field Friday night against the Texas Rangers. "It was certainly an accident," Royals spokesman David Holtzman said. "He wasn't shooting at anybody." Kornacki was interviewing shortstop Tony Pena Jr. before the game when she felt the pellet hit near her left eye, said Gary Roberts, KMBC's assistant news director. Kornacki ended the interview and left the locker room immediately. "I was just messing around in here," Brown said. "I feel terrible about it. Karen is one of the nicest persons that I've met, especially as far as the media is concerned. This happening to her, I feel absolutely awful about it."It seems the reporter was OK, perhaps protected by her contact lense from the pellet actually piercing her eye, but that's, um, something. Shot her right in the eye, did he? :snicker:

Wow, great sports hobbies that started out as time fillers for teens who couldn't get laid in a Parisian whorehouse, or at NYU even. Classic.

="Centerfield"]Dear Mets, please ignore the unwarranted grumbling from my fellow fans who don't know how to have a good time. They hate life and everything that is fun. Like the B-52's. I think Sweet Caroline is a riot. I'm going to continue to sing it and not worry about what anyone thinks. Along that line, I have some other suggestions as well: 1. Throw back HR balls hit by opposing players. 2. Play Sinatra's "New York, New York" after wins. 3. Put up a meter counting the number of HR's hit into McCovey Cove. 4. Day-O!!! 5. Throw an octopus on the field before playoff games. By the way, I love the unique configuration of the outfield wall. Not knowing whether a ball was a HR for six minutes? Absolute blast! CF hit this post out of the park. Though it bounced off a sign and I had to review it for five minutes before making that determination.

Thanks to some CPF generosity, I have made arrangements to attend the Thursday June 25th matinee against the Cards. I will be taking Fboy along. My plan right now is to not tell him until that morning, then wake him up, put his hat and jersey on and drive down to the game. Should be a nice surprise for him.

="Edgy DC"]Ben Shpigel of the Times does a profile of the last MEt off the bench. Journeyman Gives Mets Insurance at Shortstop By BEN SHPIGEL Published: May 27, 2009 As a slick-fielding 15-year-old, Wilson Valdez reminded his friends of another smooth shortstop from the Dominican Republic: Felix Fermin, whose nickname was El Gato, Spanish for the Cat. A nickname was born for Valdez: El Gatito the Kitten. Wilson Valdez was hitting .198 for the Indians Class AAA affiliate when the Mets obtained him.Im proud of it, Valdez said. That moniker has followed Valdez from stop to stop over a long and, for the most part, undistinguished professional career, which has taken him to the Mets after a trade with Cleveland on Tuesday. Playing in 111 games for four teams he has been a member of 10 organizations Valdez has a lifetime .211 batting average with one home run. He has not played in the major leagues since 2007. But he has relished the role of El Gatito throughout, filling in capably for the injured Rafael Furcal in 2007. The Mets acquired Valdez, who was hitting .198 for the Indians Class AAA affiliate, for a similar reason. I know my strength is defense, and I know they needed a middle infielder, the 31-year-old Valdez said before Wednesdays game against the Washington Nationals. Im just happy to do whatever I can for the team. How long Valdez remains with the Mets is linked to the returns of Alex Cora (thumb ligament) and Jose Reyes (tendinitis behind the right calf) from the disabled list. The Mets are optimistic that both players will return as soon their stays are scheduled to end: June 2 for Cora and June 5 for Reyes. As it happens, the Mets need for a capable middle infielder is far less dire than it was just last Friday, when Ramon Martinez had his second two-error game in two starts. Martinez and Luis Castillo have developed continuity up the middle, and Manager Jerry Manuel said he probably will not start Valdez until Saturday afternoon against the Florida Marlins. Those guys are now playing very well in the middle, and Id like to keep them out there, Manuel said. I dont feel as if we have to find out at this point about Valdez. Manuel added: From what I understand, hes a very good defensive player. Looking at his bio, he has some history of hitting a little bit, and theres been some history where he hasnt hit. That bio includes playing in South Korea and Japan in 2008. Much to his dismay, in January 2008 the Los Angeles Dodgers sold him to the Kia Tigers, and he played four months in Korea before joining the Yakult Swallows. His wife, Kamie, and son, Wilson, spent much of the year at their home in Albuquerque. It was uncomfortable going so far away when it wasnt my choice, Valdez said. Im much happier back here playing in the United States.Your contract can be sold overseas without your approval? If I was a woman I would use Yakult Swallows as my porn star name.

="Frayed Knot"]="soupcan"]'Fuck tubs'. Love it. Had no idea there was an actual term for those... If there wasn't there is now. Side note on sex pills commercials: I love how the guy is always the good-looking and seemingly in great shape middle-aged type. And while I'm sure there are some E.D. patients who fit that mold you know that 90+% of those who need the stuff are likely much older, vastly overweight, alcoholic, diabetic, or, quite likely, some combination of all of the above. But they certainly don't want to put those faces on the product. Advertising is great that way. Compare the crowd eating at McDonald's or Burger King in their TV commercials with the actual people going to those places and you'll see the same thing. Big fat messes of people aren't allowed on TV unless it's a Dateline special and their shot from the neck down. And I love that, by the way. A bunch of giant headless "things" walking around American cities.

John Cougar Lunchbucket May 27 2009 09:20 PM Pagan actually looks like a player every now and then, doesn't he? He made a fairly competent run on a drive to RCF tonight too. Elster88 May 27 2009 09:32 PM His stats from last April weren't as good as I thought they were. Lots of doubles. Still a nice player. Gwreck May 27 2009 09:34 PM ="John Cougar Lunchbucket":271x43es]Pagan actually looks like a player every now and then, doesn't he? He made a fairly competent run on a drive to RCF tonight too.[/quote:271x43es] 2x tonight, I think. Hopefully his good play continues -- I see him as likely trade bait come July, after Delgado returns. Elster88 May 27 2009 09:40 PM Trade bait for what? A starter I guess. If all those guys come back healthy we don't need much. Bullpen is sound. Gwreck May 27 2009 09:42 PM You don't figure we'll have some other injury somewhere along the line? I assume Pagan is the odd man out once Delgado returns, but maybe he outplays Murphy. Elster88 May 27 2009 09:43 PM If we have some other injury down the line then we need to keep Pagan and play him, no? John Cougar Lunchbucket May 27 2009 09:45 PM I figure the injury we'll get next IS Pagan. Yes, he started off great last year and cooled in a hurry. That's why I say he looks like a real player sometimes, not always. Edgy DC May 27 2009 09:47 PM I don't think we're worried right now about the relatively far-off return of Delgado. The eggs will be scrambled a half a dozen different ways by then. Frayed Knot May 28 2009 07:09 AM Pagan is also much faster than I remembered. He beat out by a stride what I thought was going to be a close play on an infield roller yesterday. He just flew down the basepath like ... well, like an Angel. Reed is the guy with the most Pagan-redundant skills -- both can play CF when needed, spell Sheff/Murph in late innings, PH to get on base, not a lot of power -- so things might eventually come down to a choice there. Pagan has the advantage of switch-hitting. Edgy DC May 28 2009 07:29 AM ="John Cougar Lunchbucket"]Terrific addition, really from the start. Who wouldn't want a bench guy who can also step in and be the cleanup hitter. Sheff, Livan, Santos, FMart, RMart, even Pagan -- guys making contributions we couldn't have dreamed would have only 2 months ago. It was tough to dream of RMart ("RMart"?) contributing a week ago. Frayed Knot May 28 2009 07:49 AM ="LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr"]Does a genially stupid rant count? GS: "It shouldn't be against the law to take the picture, but to post it and say something negative I think should be against the law. It's like an invasion of privacy." I'll cut Sheff some slack on that one because one could say that he had libel/slander kind of stuff on his mind when saying that. Not that I'd suspect he knows the difference, or would care to make a distinction between what's illegal and what simply annoys him. But on the list of stupid things said by Gary Sheffield this one doesn't even make the first cut. It's just too outnumbered. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr May 28 2009 09:19 AM I just meant that it was his first such comment since putting on the pinstripes of good. Even if he weren't our asshole, this would rate maybe a 2 out of 10 on the "Whaaaaaa?" scale. Also, if you believe the scuttlebutt from beat guys, the boys in the clubhouse kind of love the guy. (I like to imagine his clubhouse persona as "unintentionally funny Wilford Brimley" or "Fred Sanford with wrist strength".) John Cougar Lunchbucket May 28 2009 09:25 AM ="LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr":2wbj8s9d]"Fred Sanford with wrist strength"[/quote:2wbj8s9d] dying Benjamin Grimm May 28 2009 09:26 AM Gary Cohen was saying something similar last night. He implied that the young players on the team are in awe of Sheffield and his accomplishments. Sheffield was a shot in the dark for the Mets that has paid off very well so far. Just a few weeks ago I remember some of us were calling for the Mets to end the Sheffield experiment when he was hitting around .150. (I wasn't one of those people, but I must admit that I didn't disagree with them either.) Hi, my name is Fman99 and I am a jerkface. "Hi, Fman!" I am guilty of railing, repeatedly and stoidly, against the unbalanced schedule and the 19 games apiece against the division foes. But the old schedule wouldn't get us 19 games against this woeful bunch of has-beens and never-was'es that wear the uniform of the Washington Nationals. It's got me just giddy, especially with me having tickets to next Sunday's Mets/Nats tilt in D.C.

I heart Sheff and whatever he's using that's gotten him his mojo back. He is CARRYING this offense.

Dibs is the worst. He's a smear. Unearned run, now 7-4 and Dunn on deck as the potential tying run. Which gives me the fear.
