In 2019, [brenley] said that “it might be easier to run the bases if he didn't have that bike chain around his neck,” about Fernando Tatis Jr. Shyeeet, I've said that a ton of times about multiple players over the years. Not racist. More like something people who have the need to find racism everywhere or people grasping at straws to show a pattern of behaviour would point to. You don't need jewelry flying around. My high school coach made me take the watch (remember watches? They told time before cell phones) off on day one. Thanks for lending us your definitive, informed opinion. Now do du-rags. And after that, tackle the fact that Brenly's been doing this nudge-nudge-wink-wink shit for years (about chains, blond hair on Hispanic players, tattoos), with a marked lean toward people darker than coffee ice cream.
  2. Just noticing now how much like an Easter Island/Rapa Nui statue Diaz's mug looks like, especially when he gets all scowly.
  3. Castro-- helped by a nice DP to end the 8th-- turns in a solid two innings of work. Lindor-- who started it-- gets a hustle double to start the next one.
  4. So now Villar's hurt. (Tight hamstring, as per Wayne Randazzo.)
  5. Rehab weight, y'know?
  6. cal sharpie wrote: You Tube baseball = unwatchable. If MLB wanted to create an alternate broadcast for kids or gamblers that would be fine. The NFL did that in the playoffs with a separate broadcast on Nickelodeon and it was great. This is an exclusive telecast and it's not for anyone: Mets fans, both AZ fans, gamblers, kids, baseball lovers, no one will love this and no casual viewer will seek it out despite it being "free". It's just a money-grab by MLB (which also angers cable and mlb.tv subscribers as you're paying to watch your team and not getting anything in return today). I feel like I MIGHT be enjoying Franco's commentary a little more if he just eschewed baseball insight and just went full Al Michaels with gambling discussion.
  7. I have the sound turned down while I do other stuff. Can someone explain what a guy in a ref shirt doing martial arts poses was all about? =roger_that post_id=66485 time=1622666395 user_id=128] Did they just say it's 4-4, so they're close to beating the over/under of 8.5 runs? What do they think is going to happen, a tie? And a 5th run promptly comes in.
  8. He's BEEN hitting the last three games or so. Meanwhile, I don't think I'm ready for James McCann to be the answer to "Who's our best hitter?"
  9. Keep in mind... this is against an offense that's been worse than OURS over the last 30 days
  10. Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: Very Matzy 1st inning here for Petey BEYOND Matzy. Matzier than Matz. Matz gave us a good two innings or so in HIS shit starts.
  11. Amateur day on the pitcher's mound, too, apparently
  12. Lord, even the damn commercial breaks are more annoying. If you're going to take time out for ads, show some ads.
  13. Ayyyyyup. Du-rags are NOT bandannas. It was essentially a fried chicken joke in old-people-make-fun-of-the-styles-of-today drag.
  14. That would be a DAMN delight. But honestly, fuck a Brenly apology. He IS that guy; I would bet a kidney wasn't sitting on that for at least an inning or two, waiting to drop it at whenever he had the "right moment." If he ever does reflect on it, it won't be overnight after a Twitter storm; the best you'll get from him is something mealy-mouthed.
  15. I mean, so do a lot of guys. And FWIW, though Stroman didn't talk about it postgame, D-Back Rojas admitted he initiated whatever there was, y'know, because Stroman LOOKED AT HIM, something a totally normal person often does. The thing that gets me about Stroman is that his stuff and location is excellent... but if he's off, it gets HAMMERED. He was off on maybe 4 pitches last night, three in that inning, and one of them was... well. If it wouldn't fuck up his timing too much, I actually think he might be well served to bring back a lot of that Johnny Cueto windup weirdness every now and again, just to put one more thought in hitters' heads.
  16. To hear NL West fans tell it online last night, it's a pretty constant just-between-us-old-white-guys racially-tinged 'joke' parade-- not just Tatis, but Machado, Puig, and a number of others getting offhand, apropos-of-nothing comments about cultural-coded style or behavior tidbits-- in that booth in recent years.
  17. Edgy MD wrote: McKinney's fumbly defense was the Diamondbacks' secret weapon tonight. Was thinking the same thing at the time... but that was Drury in for the last play. (I suppose that's why they didn't pinch-run him for Dom in left in the ninth.) How do you NOT have a camera positioned for the down-the-line shot?
  18. Alarmingly SLOW "Blister." My specific deGrom-removal gripe-- outside of the ones already here expressed-- was, if we're doing the half-injury-rehab/half-game management thing, then wouldn't the 7th have been the perfect time for a 2-inning Lugo outing? Low leverage, relaxed environs, conspiracy-nut-dotted crowd.
  19. =Fman99 post_id=66104 time=1622514442 user_id=86] It was a particularly hard hit single to right and Reddick came up gunning. Peraza would have been dead to rights had he been sent. It was a smart call.
  20. Wait... not watching, but following idly on Gameday for the time being (while waiting for the young'un to finish her movie). It ended up being moot, thankfully, but was there any earthly reason why Peraza wasn't sent on a hit to the outfield with two outs?
  21. Benjamin Grimm wrote: . http://phpbb3.leaptoad.com/mets/archives/2300/f1_t2382.shtmlNickname Methodology! Wow! That Bret guy ( before my time) was pretty mean. OTOH, those nicknames really were lame. Yeah, I've seen a few of those from Bret in other archive posts. Didn't know him, don't know him, don't care to. As to the nickname... it's okay, but not super evocative. For something to really hit my sweet spot on that tip, I need a picture painted.

Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: I'd consider making momentary loss of contact with the bag--after arriving safely--a non-reviewable call, unless in cases where in the umpire's judgment, a slide goes beyond the bag or into the baselines. It'd be a grey area for sure but they already use interpretations in rule at plays at the bases wrt contact and obstruction This is the answer. That could work. Those of you who like a little human-judgement-uncertainty mixed into your replay might prefer a FIFA-ish system, whereby you let the umps call the game, and when something needs to be looked at (any close scoring-related play; any egregious/obviously visible error, as determined by a replay official), replay umps signal the umps. No challenges. (Of course, if y'all like this petifogging fun... wait'll you see what the Premier League has done with offsides calls this season!)
  23. "That's an E-3 if you're scoring at home, and if you are... your loneliness saddens me." -Vin Scully-type announcer on The Simpsons Used to, especially as a kid/young adult. But as I started attending in mixed company-- some non-fans, some folks who wanted to walk concourses-- I started doing it less and less. This was mostly due to a psychological quirk-- if I couldn't score the game in its entirety, uninterrupted, I wouldn't want to start. (Call it lazy perfectionism.)
  24. We've got tickets! We've also got indoor backup plans!
