="metirish":2xopm25u]Tuesday's at 8PM Ken Burns "Baseball" documentary will be shown. 1st Inning will air January 6th with subsequent Innings each Tuesday at 8PM. I have never watched the complete series so I'm looking forward to this.[/quote:2xopm25u] Thanks - I just set my TiVo. I love this channel entirely too much... John Cougar Lunchbucket Jan 09 2009 08:25 PM They have Lincecum in the studio now and they're going to do a demonstration of his motion later. Weird teeth and pretentious wearing on a knit cap indoors, but I do love to watch him throw. Kong76 Jan 10 2009 11:05 AM 'irish: Ken Burns "Baseball" documentary will be shown <<< Of course they are, I got the dvd box set for xmas. I really enjoyed it, I watched the whole thing and I'm in the middle of the early 1900's one again. I vaguely remember watching some of these ep- isodes on Channel 13 years ago but this was the best xmas present I've gotten in years. Frayed Knot Jan 10 2009 12:30 PM One thing about the series on MLBN unlike on the disc-set or the original PBS showing ... it's no longer commercial-free! So enjoy your discs. G-Fafif Jan 10 2009 02:00 PM Tonight at 8:00 Eastern: Game Seven of the 2006 NLCS. I hear it's a real barnburner until about the middle of the sixth. Then there's probably a football game on. John Cougar Lunchbucket Jan 11 2009 09:55 PM I just watched the 1990 Pirates score six runs in the 11th to rally and beat the Cubs 13-12. Go Bucs! I'll tell ya, he was skinny but had mad batspeed and really stung his one hit: line drive to right. When he came home with the winning run they mobbed him and his helmet came off -- that's where the difference was the starkest. By the way, I had no idea why they were showing this game, which was on a rainy April day in Pittsburgh. When Andre Dawson hit a grand slam in the top of the 12th, I thought that was why. Thanks for the recap. metirish Jan 13 2009 05:10 PM Bobby Valentine on the Hot Stove right now. metsmarathon Jan 13 2009 05:32 PM the camera work on that show is unnecessarily jumpy. metirish Jan 13 2009 05:36 PM I hate to hear a guy like Barry Larkin call John Smoltz "Smoltzie". G-Fafif Jan 13 2009 05:56 PM MLBN's "Seasons" show highlights 1986 Wednesday night at 8:00. 1986...good season. metirish Jan 14 2009 06:58 PM A good show , I didn't know that Bruce Hurst had been voted series MVP when everyone thought they were going to win game six and the WS . Frayed Knot Feb 04 2009 06:50 AM MLBN gets Bob Costas on board -- a logical choice that brings tiny Bob out of his baseball-less world (he'll still work for NBC) but still a good "get" for them. As with most guys he's going to have his fans as well as his detractors (see FMan). But at least with Costas he's one of the few national sports voices who doesn't either look down at baseball with barely disguised contempt or ignore it until there's a negative story (steroids, contract disputes) to stomp on with both feet. IOW, rather than being a network grunt only doing baseball because some media giant is paying him big bucks and therefore feels obligated to give him something do during the summer, he actually likes and knows the game. I appreciate this thread as my online TV Guide still doesn't include the program names for the channel. Thank you. Kong76 Feb 21 2009 12:12 PM Seaver's 300th win going to ninth inning NOW!!! at Yankee Stadium. Lindsey Freakin' Nelson in the booth! Frayed Knot Feb 24 2009 08:47 AM The name of the nightly show on MLBN has morphed from 'Hot Stove' to 'MLB Tonight' - something that sounds like thier way of acknowledging that games (even meaningless ones) are starting on a daily basis. And their nightly preview feature '30 Teams/30 Days' visits Port St. Lucie for their Mets run-down tonight (and likely repeated 7 or 8 times over the next few days). bmfc1 Feb 24 2009 09:34 AM It looks like the MLB Network will have 2 or 3 ST games each day, using a local feed. Friday's game will be on live, w/the SNY crew. metirish Mar 03 2009 01:15 PM I caught Sever on the other night , he was interviewed in Studio 42. At times it was painful to watch as the host tried to engage Seaver in some banter and getting curt responses in return. Thanks Irish apmorris Mar 03 2009 07:18 PM I haven't seen Al Leiter, who's always good, on MLBN yet but I have seen most of the rest of the crew. Let me break it down for you. MLBN, The Best Damn On-Air Personalities Period! Matt Vasgersian Theater Major (like most ESPN Anchoroons), has all the smarminess of Costas and is easily a half inch taller. Harold Reynolds is feeling it. Free from all ass-grabbing accusations, cutting lose and taking over every panel they put him on. He's so comfortable up there. maybe he can start working getting off whatever meds he's taking. Hazel Mae has a great name if you're the Weather chick on WSTRPPR in Cincinnati. Too much lip gloss to be taken seriously, seriously. BTW, some of my best friends are Polynesian. Mitch Williams has a bad attitude, which is always a plus. Barry Larkin is a mannequin or Yul Brynner in Westworld resurrected. Jon Heyman Great to see Heyman has no real solid leads or news or opinions on TV also. Trenni Kusnierek Hope home girl is using sun block 180. Joe Magrane can trigger epilepsy episodes with his misplaced pregnant pauses. Sounds like a fully recovered stutterer. Has a great head of hair, which may or may not be his own. Dan Plesac Hey, remember Dan from the Brewers in the 90s? ... me either. The 80s?. Seems like a nice guy. Scored high on the Wonderlic. more later .... http://mlbnetwork.mlb.com/network/personalities/ John Cougar Lunchbucket Mar 03 2009 08:24 PM Vasgerian sounds like a treatment for that not-so-fresh feeling. Hazel Mae has nice pineapples. Gwreck Mar 03 2009 08:31 PM MLB Network is producing their own documentaries/features as well now: apparently there's one on the Young family (Dmitri and Delmon) and one on Josh Hamilton. Watched the Hamilton one (was ok, nothing special) except for the moment early on in the show when they're talking about Hamilton's various baseball skills and they mention his arm, and cut to a shot of him throwing out a runner at third. I mention I think we were there for the game...go quickly check the scorecard I kept, and yep, it was Hamilton throwing out Marco Scutaro, 9 to 5, top of the 6th inning on August 2nd of last year. All of this is mostly just a long way of saying that this channel is great and is my default "flip to" channel when whatever I'm watching goes to commercial, or is boring, or I can't find anything else to watch. Delgado Will Retire After 2008 (according to a confidant)
dgwphotography replied to Valadius's topic in New York Mets Talk
I would be pretty pissed if he announced his retirement now, after Teixeira signed with the Yankees... -
It didn't exactly work, since he was with the Mets in '85 and '87, and played with the Cardinals in '86. Quite the bad timing trifecta.
-
If I never hear the name Molina again, it won't be enough....

What hole in the lineup concerns your ass the most?
dgwphotography replied to a topic in New York Mets Talk
he he - Edgy put "ass" and "hole" in the subject... I would say that my most pressing concern is 2nd base - Castillo killed us in every possible way last year. -
="Edgy DC"]That honor still belongs to the late Joe Pepitone. I'm think Phil here would give Joe a run for his money:
-
Come on - You gotta believe - Tug McGraw.
-
I don't think he was the same after Yadier Molina. It seemed to me he had problems getting hitters after the first 2 strikes... That being said, I wish him the best - I hope the change of scenery spurs onto the career we all thought he should have. By all accounts, a good guy who never ducked questions, especially after a bad loss.
-
I saw him play in a DH in New Britain. He just didn't strike me as being that impressive... The thing that did strike me was his resemblance to Larry Bird.

(Merged from Sabathia (Split from AP Hot Stove), 12/10/2008) Vince Coleman Firecracker Dec 10 2008 07:59 AM If this deal is finalized, I think the Yanks just got a lot better in the short-term, but might be dealing with an albatross of a contract in a few years. CC is a big dude who has thrown a lot of innings as a young pitcher, and 23 million a year is a heavy millstone, even for the Steinbrennies, to carry if his production falls off. Last year, PECOTA gave him a 22% collapse rate and a 14% attrition rate. Those numbers will improve after last season is factored in, but they won't approach Santana's 15% collapse, 3% attrition rate. Last year, the Yanks reportedly refused to seriously enter the Santana bidding because of a commitment to pitching prospects. Going outside of the organization to sign Sabathia, while not a complete surrender of that commitment, is an admission they don't have the same faith in their prospects they had last year. As a result of this, they now have committed more money to a pitcher that's about equivalent in talent, a little younger and a lot riskier. I guess I'm really saying that I like Santana a lot more than Sabathia, and I'm soooo glad the Mets, rather than the MFYs, wound up with him. Now it's $60mil above. Yanqui fans yesterday were pretty funny. Egged on by Francesa, who was ready to throw in the towel on CC, the minions were in full 'Fuck Him' mode, deciding that if he really wanted to pitch for them he'd have already grabbed the offer. And the reasoning was classic MFY: - we're the Yanquis, we shouldn't be chasing him, he should be chasing us!! - this proves that he's just another Randy Johnson, Kevin Brown, Ed Whitson, etc. who can't handle NYC - anyone who doesn't prefer to live in NY is wrong Edgy DC Dec 10 2008 09:21 AM Randy Johnson can't handle being a Yankee. He can only handle kicking their asses to the tune of 3-0, 1.04 and ending their championship run, perhaps forever. Centerfield Dec 10 2008 09:21 AM I figured he'd go there all along, but now that he's signed, that rotation is going to be pretty sick. Sabathia, Wang, Joba, and either AJ Burnett or Derek Lowe (from what I hear, they're not nearly done). It's a good thing they still have A-Rod, who doesn't have what it takes to win, or else they might be pretty dangerous next year. Frayed Knot Dec 10 2008 09:31 AM ="Iubitul"]I thought I read an article somewhere saying that ESPN was working on changing its morning lineup, and working on providing live reports in the morning in order to prevent this. I think they go to a live SportsCenter at 9AM or something but their early morning telecast is still basically the same stuff they've been running since late night. So when stuff happens at 3AM (KRod) or 4AM (CC) their reports are not wrong but sometimes in direct contradiction to the up-to-date crawl across the bottom of the screen and when the two sync-up it's pretty funny. P.S. ESPN's usual tactic after that is to get one of their own guys to confirm the story and thereafter present it as; "as reported by ESPN" -- like they were the source all along. ESPN's usual tactic after that is to get one of their own guys to confirm the story and thereafter present it as; "as reported by ESPN" -- like they were the source all along. This is standard operating procedure for the television types out here. People I've talked to for a story tell me that TV people will call after a story has been in print and say, "Is everything in the paper correct?" and that's the only question they ask. Then, they use all the details from the story on the air and drop in the "as we told you at noon" or "We have learned..." or some other weasel phrase. We usually end up throwing things at the newsroom television. But back to Sabbathia. An over-worked West Coast guy with a weight problem does not seem like a good $23 mill a year investment for seven years. Meanwhile, the Santana deal keeps looking better and better and better and better... Centerfield Dec 10 2008 10:38 AM Sabathia won't exercise that opt-out clause if he truly wants to be a Yankee. And if he does, management won't take well to that. Going outside of the organization to sign Sabathia, while not a complete surrender of that commitment, is an admission they don't have the same faith in their prospects they had last year. As a result of this, they now have committed more money to a pitcher that's about equivalent in talent, a little younger and a lot riskier. Frayed Knot Dec 10 2008 12:01 PM Neither one (Santana or Sabathia) has had any significant injuries to date. CC is a year yonger but also has more mileage on his arm (about 200 IPs) due to Johan's Rule 5 history which kept him on the back of the bench for a while. CC signed thru 2015, Johan thru 2013 w/an option for 2014 -- meaning that if the option kicks in the contracts go through the same age. So any speculation about longevity and injury comes down to usage - Sabathia logging more innings more often and if one wants to draw a conclusion about body type. btw, that "In case I hate NY" opt-out clause for CC after 3 years/$69mil is apparently accurate metsguyinmichigan Dec 10 2008 02:52 PM ="Gwreck":d6umr4hw]="Edgy DC":d6umr4hw]While I agree, I have to say that, while the Yankees have the classickest looking uniform[/quote:d6umr4hw] Detroit home whites?[/quote:d6umr4hw] You're both kidding me, right? Frayed Knot Nov 29 2008 04:41 AM ="DocTee"]]Not on the radar at all, it seems: Kerry Wood. I'm disappointed by the Mets' apparent lack of interest in any other than Fuentes or K-Rod. My preference is for Wood, or Arizona's Brandon Lyon (who'd come much, much cheaper than any of the aforementioned). An article in today's NYTimes suggests just the opposite. Citing the always popular "people in baseball with knowledge of their stategy" they say that the Mets are persuing any and all options to fill their spot - or spots - in the pen. Specifically they mention not only the already held discussions with agents for Rodriguez & Fuentes but also those with other teams concerning Putz, Valverde, Street, and Jenks, as well as "evaluating" the situations with Wood & Hoffman (sounds like more as a fallback). Lyons isn't mentioned although I have no idea about his availability. MFS62 Nov 29 2008 04:31 PM On ESPN2 during the BC-Maryland game the tickert just said: "Mets believe they can sign free agent P Francisco Rodriguez to a 3-year deal because there are no other takers, ESPN's Peter Gammons reports" No link. Two comments: 1) It was Gammons 2) Don't count your chickens, etc. etc. Later Benjamin Grimm Nov 29 2008 05:05 PM As of now, my hunch is that the Mets will end up signing Rodriguez to a four-year deal. Kong76 Nov 29 2008 05:31 PM I agree. Or three years at really sick money per year. Gwreck Dec 05 2008 12:10 PM Some thoughts on this today from Buster Olney's blog at ESPN: ] The Mets' front office believes, rightly, that it is in the driver's seat in the closers market, and part of their internal discussion has been about making offers to some relievers while informing them that the first one to jump at their proposal will be signed, and the others will be out of luck. The reason why this could be such an effective strategy for the Mets is they are the only team that appears willing to spend relatively big money on a multi-year deal for a closer. For example: It is not known exactly what the Mets intend to offer to the top-flight closers, but let's say they proposed a three-year, $36 million deal to Francisco Rodriguez; a three-year, $30 million offer to Brian Fuentes; and a two-year, $18 million offer to Kerry Wood. And then they could tell all three that the first to bite gets the contract. The Cardinals, Brewers, Indians and other teams are looking for closers, but probably won't spend at the same level as the Mets. The Indians, in fact, are willing to let the market play out, and at some point, some closer will be available at a good price, whether it be one of the free agents (like Trevor Hoffman) or perhaps a trade for J.J. Putz or Huston Street. Benjamin Grimm Dec 05 2008 12:24 PM What do we think of the speculation that the Mets could get Street from the Rockies for Heilman? If I'm Omar, I'd do that in a heartbeat. (I don't know if Street would be the answer for the ninth inning, but he'd be an upgrade for the eighth inning.) I just don't see the reason why the Rockies would do this, other than the idea that some teams see Heilman as a more viable starter than the Mets do. smg58 Dec 05 2008 12:58 PM Heilman won't be enough, but apparently the Rockies would bite if we threw in Feliciano. That still seems like a good offer to me, but I don't see the harm in waiting for a bit and seeing what our other options are. Frayed Knot Dec 06 2008 06:42 AM Read something in the last day or two (I forget where at this point) that Omar may try the 'first-come/first-served' approach with the group of FA closers. IOW, put out more or less simultaneous (though not identical) offers to Rodriguez, Fuentes & Wood and inform tham all that the first one to accept gets the job while those who snooze, lose. So maybe KRod gets offered 3x$14, Fuentes 2x12, and Wood 1+option in an attempt to snag a closer on what the Mets consider reasonable terms. Now this is a similar tact he tried with FA catchers Ramon Hernandez and (Benjy Molina?) a few years back although neither bit. That, in turn, caused Omar to trade for LoDuca instead. So maybe the trade route involving the Putz/Street/Valverde crowd is on the back burner in case the FA gambit falls through. I think I'm one of the one's in real pain over this that TMF is referring to. The thing is not once has the countdown, the ceremonies, or anything that the Mets did or didn't do play a role in it. It is simply the fact that a place that has been a desired destination for me for over 35 years is no longer there. Shea is a place that I dreamed about visiting since my aunt gave me my first yearbook in 1972. It's the knowledge that I will never feel the attachment to the new place that I do to the old place. It's the fact that it was a home away from home of sorts - a place where I knew ever nook and cranny, where I knew where to get the best knishes, or the best dogs. A place that is home to so many memories. Whatever the Mets did or didn't do to mark this occasion plays no role in how I feel about it.
