  1. Amazingly enough, only two. Don't forget Jesse Orosco was in the league before that.
  2. Years in which the oldest player in the league was under 40: NL: 1975 -- Bob Gibson 39 1967 --Ruben Gomez 39 1966 - Robin Roberts 39 1938 - Kiki Cuyler 39 1920 - Gavvy Cravath 39 1919 - Gavvy Cravath 38 1912 - Bob Ewing 39 1905 - Kid Gleason 38 1900- Chief Zimmer 39 AL: 1978 Ron Fairly 39 1973 Orlando Pena 39 1970 Dick Hall 39 1902 Jimmy Ryan 39 1901 Dummy Hoy 39 And they call the AL the Junior Circuit? Of course, in a few years the AL's numbers were skewed by ringers -- Minnie Minoso, Satchel Paige and Nick Altrock, who had a few dueling years with Jimmy Austin as propped-up oldest player in the league. Most consecutive years as oldest player in his league -- Hoyt Wilhelm, who went 1966-69 in the AL, then was traded over to the NL and went 69-72. If you count 1969 twice, which I think you have to, that's 8 consecutive league leaderships as geezer.
  3. Yeah, that was basically my question. If you;'re trying to shore up the bottom of your rotation, and you have a number 5 starter who has, let's say, 1 QS out of 3, is it reasonable to suppose you're going to upgrade that, or is that the norm?
  4. How will the Braves finish ahead of the Marlins with 4 fewer wins? I knew they were evil.
  5. I'd still love it if someone could research my quality starts ratio question. I'd do it myself, but I can't find complete QS stats anywhere. How much strength is it reasonable to expect from bottom of rotation vs. top of rotation?
  6. OHernandez - 5 Reyes - 1 Sanchez - 1 LoDuca - 1 Valentin - 2
  7. Soler to Norfolk is necessary. Maybe he'll pull it back together. I wouldn't give up on Maine just yet.
  8. We can use him.
  9. OK, a little comic relief here. Lord knows we need it. Joe Morgan says of Alay Soler (on CC for the hearing impaired): "Any time a pitcher is afraid of cocaine, he's not going to be giving you Long Beach." Anyone want to take a shot at what he was really saying? I think I know the first part, can't figure out the second.
  10. I'll be seeing the 'Gades play the Cyclones on the 4th of July. I'll be torn -- root for the home team, or the Mets' farm? The home team wins out, but I'll secretly be rooting for both sides.
  11. Yanks have completely given up hitting the cutoff man.
  12. I woulda put Eckstein and Roleh higher. Like second.
  13. Let me know when you're coming.
  14. Surprises on the list as compared to what you might have predicted preseason? That Reyes is that high, and Wagner is that low. That Sanchez is above Wagner.
  15. I spent some time at your Nikon gallery. Wonderful work.
  16. When Schilling walked Woody, the guys in booth replayed it, saying "Watch Schilling's reaction." Schilling's reaction was "FUCK!"
  17. I think "an historic" may be correct.
  18. Here are some numbers from Diamomd Mind that establish benchmarks for the top or the rotation...still looking for bottom-of-the-rotation benchmarks.[/url] on edit: Sorry -- I see Dreamer gave us the same link.
  19. The reason why I chose it as a stat is -- you have to choose something. And it seemed relevant to my question. A quality start means the guy pitched far enough into the game to get to your short relief men, and when he left, your team was still in the game. And I know there's not much difference between a 1 and a 2 -- you should probably expect some consistency of quality from your top 2 guys. But there's presumably a difference between a 1/2 and a 4/5. So when you say, as everyone does, "We need more pitching," how does the more pitching you're likely to get compare with the pitching you have? If an Alay Soler, for example, gives you one quality start out of every three outings (just picking numbers out of thin air), should you figure that this is way below average, and that you can reasonably expect to go out and find a bottom-of-the-rotation guy who'll give you two out of five? And how much is it worth to you to give up, in order to boost the bottom of your rotation from 33% efficiency to 40% efficiency?
  20. So back to my initial question, which I think is a good one...
