  1. WOR 710? I'm getting Rush.
  2. Bitter Bill's slight gets more offensive every time I think about it. Here's what I wrote on "John wants to talk sports with you" on Facebook, and it covers my feeling: RIP Jeff McKnight. You were a Big Leaguer.
  3. Anyone who makes it to the big leagues and contributes - as McKnight did, over a a few years -- cannot be described as lousy.
  4. And as always, I'm good with actually matching pitchers to situations. I'm not locked into the idea that there has to be one closer with a capital C, or the idea that if a guy comes in and gets lights out in the 8th inning, you automatically have to lift him for the 9th.
  5. I went with Grandy.
  6. Like Gil McDougald? Does he throw like a girl?
  7. You're right. 80 RBIs.
  8. Is on the roster more of the season than not. Does a decent job, nothing to brag about. If you have a 12-man pitching staff, there will be times, and some of those times will matter, when you're relying on your 12th-best pitcher.
  9. MetMichiganGuy pretty much nailed what I was going to say.
  10. Hits .280. drives in 50 runs, makes the routine plays at shortstop and every now and then surprises you by turning a nifty DP, ends up with a solidly positive WAR. I believe that the Mets' choice not to go for another shortstop was not based on can't afford, but no better options without sacrificing too much.
  11. And while I'm wasting breath, from the article -- Harvey is a headliner, a star, and that is why they are, in part, finally relevant again. Does that mean that Harvey's star quality is part of the reason they're finally relevant again, or that Harvey's star quality makes them partly relevant again?
  12. I know it's a waste of breath to complain about the Times coverage, but I've got plenty of breath, so... Today's Times online. First three baseball stories, Yankee stories. An ex-Yankee pitcher is trying to make a comeback. A current Yankee pitcher has them dreaming of big things, even though last year he was shit. C. C. Sabathia is trying to make a comeback, even though last year he was shit. And farther down the page, if you scroll far enough, the fourth story: Matt Harveys Return Brings Rare Buzz to Mets Camp As opposed to the hot Yankee buzz about pitchers who were shit but now might not be.
  13. Starts the season, doesn't finish.
  14. Can someone explain to me why, if there's more than one guy who's capable of pitching the 9 th inning, it suddenly becomes "bullpen by committee," and everyone is so contemptuous of it? Why, if a guy can pitch in the 8th inning, is he incapable of pitching in the 9th inning. If you're leading 4-2 going into the top of the 9th, and the first two batters due up are guys that Vic Black has always had a lot of success with, what's so wrong with bringing Vic Black in? Because you're afraid that will bring about the dreaded bullpen by committee? Why, if Bobby Parnell is your best pitcher and the score is tied in the 8th and the other team gets two men on base, can you not bring him in just because it's not a save situation? Why, if Jeurys Familia comes in and retires the side on 6 pitches in the 8th, are you so sure he's going to fall apart in the 9th because he's not The Closer?
  15. Edgin the chalk, Alvarez the longshot.
  16. Not exactly new, but I just ran across it. From a profile of Alger Hiss: I had never met with such a breadth of intelligence. He could converse knowledgably on any subject from the Mets' continual need for a third baseman to the State Department's response to the Holocaust.
  17. K/BB ratio is impressive, and it's a key indicator. Lefties mature late.
  18. I could upload it to my web page, but not that easy with the limited equipment I have in Mexico.
  19. How do you upload a picture? I know how to use the Img command to connect to a picture from the internet, but how do you upload from a file? Oh...duh. Once I'd put it on Facebook, it had a URL, and I could have just linked to it there.
  20. .330 OBP, 50+ RBIs. You heard it here first.
  21. ]I'm really glad to see this thread. That "Willie was an embarrassment" meme has always made my blood boil. I was living in the Santa Cruz mountains in '72, and my daughters were visiting me for the summer. We went to see the Mets at Candlestick for Willie's first game back. My oldest wanted to sit in the left field bleachers to catch a Willie Mays home run. I said nah, we'll get better seats. What are the chances of him hitting a home run into the left field bleachers?
  22. I would have posted it here, but couldn't figure out how to upload it. Thanks for the repost.
  23. My problem is accepting the idea that any editor would allow a title that cliched.
