    My daughter texted me last light from Santa Fe. She'd just seen Thor pitch in Albuquerque, thrilled that he's coming up to the Show. Delighted with the Mets win last night, but she said it almost didn't feel like a real win because she came in right near the end of the game, turned on the radio, and didn't hear Howie say "Put it in the books!" So she wanted to know if someone was subbing for Howie last night. She didn't hear enough of the game to be able to focus on the voice.

    Offense is always streaky, and the Mets have always had a penchant for everyone slumping at the same time. How often did we hear Bob Murphy say "When the Mets start hitting...and they will..."? And not meaning to be too much of a Pollyanna, because right now Flores' defense is alarming, but people have learned to play defense after arriving at the major league level. Graig Nettles comes to mind - a terrible fielder who became a Gold Glover.

    I really don't know what a good number is, but doesn't it make sense that your batting average is going to be higher than your overall average on balls in play? How much are you going to fatten the average on balls that you don't put in play?
