Back to Adam and his David Wright interview -- I loved it. I loved what David had to say about his parents' attitude toward good grades. What can I say? I'm a sucker for that sort of thing.

I always liked the time when the Dodgers' Garvey - Lopes - Russell - Cey infield was finally broken up, and scribes asked them if there were any tears shed over the breakup of the longest running infield in baseball history. Their response was essentially, Why should there be? We never liked each other much.

What is the reasoning behind the notion that there are some guys who can pitch the 8th but not the 9th, and others who can pitch the 9th but not the 8th? -
I would think that smart baseball involves so much adjustment, an overall plan would be a relatively small part of it.

We did Banner Day once. My brother did this incredible painting, on a sheet, a pastiche of the Trumbull painting of the Signing of the Declaration of Independence, with members of the 69 Mets, captioned "The Founding Fathers of the American Revolution." We lost. The winning banner was a crudely lettered "LBJ Loves the Mets" with the LBJ spelled out in smaller letters as Larry, Bob and Joe.

There were also an amazing number of early-day Mets who became coaches -- Johnny Lewis, Galen Cisco, Larry Bearnarth, Al Jackson off the top of my head.
