1. Look out, Red Sox, here come the O's.
2. Watch out for an opportunity to advance on the bouncing breaking pitch.
3. That's an all-time best 415th career GiDP by Pujols. KEEP THE BALL!!!!
4. I remember The San Diego Chicken chasing Torre out of the dugout and around the park before finally nabbing him in centerfield, followed by the scoreboard reading, "Chicken Catch-a-Torre!" Red Buttons was an influencer!
5. Frayed Knot wrote: Top of the order coming up: Pick out your hero It would take two outs and the bases loaded to get to him, but I'm rooting for Escobooty.
6. Diaz is gassed. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but probably is.
7. The 0-2 breaking pitch was a perfect stealing opportunity for Bader. Shoulda climbed the ladder.
8. Dinky hit for Bader, but that was too much plate for an 0-2 pitch.
9. Lefty Specialist wrote: Man, I thought Pujols had gotten that one. I don't see much of a career for that guy. Warning track power.
10. And he hasn't slugged any teammates once ... as far as we know!!
11. If you guys lobby the Mets into trading Mark Vientos for Johnny Cueto, I'm going to throw something.
12. Pallante was pummeled that inning, and not just literally. That he got out of it with nothing scored is living lucky.
13. Goldy came up around the same time as Ike Davis, and for a short time, looked like the lesser player. Twelve years later, he's been a constant All-Star/MVP candidate, and Ike is a trivia question. McNeil, on the other hand, is a gift that keeps giving.
14. In the July 2, 1978 episode of The Dean Martin Celebrity Roast, Red Buttons, roasting Frank Sinatra in a shlocky-but-spirited routine, laments all the great Italians through history who, in his words, "never got a dinner." "Firstbaseman Joe Torre," he bemoans, "who was too chicken to play catcher, because, he said, 'Who wants to be known as Chicken Catcher Torre?' ... [never got a dinner]." It's a lot funnier if you were there, and, like, really plastered. Jump ahead to 3:30 below to witness this national tribute to the then-Mets manager.
15. You certainly can't sleep on the confidence in the Scherzer and deGrom (or even Megill) coming back and performing at full capacity, but I like how their starting depth looks right now. I think a few times through the rotation may help them suss out where they are, and what's available. I like how they played their outfield emergency last season, avoiding overpaying for the quick fix and ultimately grabbing McKinney. But obviously this thread is more about the organization being willing to overpay in terms of taking on a bloated contract, rather than overpaying in talent. I wouldn't pull away from the terminal and leave Zack Greinke behind. But his contract ain't so big. There's Madison Bumgarny, but I think the Backs are a few weeks from tossing in the towel. A couple of Peterson starts, and maybe even a Szapucki sighting or two, would clarify. If Megill is as ready as he seemed to be in cementing a spot as a big league starter, maybe one or both of them are also. They both came up with better pedigree papers than Tylor had.
16. Yeah, Wayward Heyward, last I read, was on the Injured List for unspecified reasons. I would guess that means Covid or Covid-exposure, but they should have a separate list for that. I don't think it's clear what the Mets are missing if anything, right now, unless the catcher market is opening up. There are always upgrades everywhere if you see an opportunity to go big, I guess. More will become clear as they approach the deadline and either injuries come or perhapas Escobars or Lugos don't return to their baselines, but after catcher, it isn't easy to identify obvious chinks for a team that was able to toss Robinson Canó on the scrapheap. Canó, by the way, has two singles in nine trips to the plate as a Padre, which — small sample size aside — is beneath his 2022 Metly output.
17. I always hear Dakota Hudson's name and I conflate Dakota Johnson and Kate Hudson into some weirdly conceived MLB pitching offspring of Melanie Griffith and Goldie Hawn.
18. Dom stopped off in Annapolis for some chowder and then got off the interstate there with a .203 average! https://s3-media0.fl.yelpcdn.com/bphoto/Vpgm2o7qOg8wXU4xvR6Bhg/l.jpg> James McCann and his wounded hamate are next.
19. I'm werried that they seem reluctant to deploy their Joely missile in May as frequently as they did in April. Yankees getting the batter of that challenge trade so far.
20. I'm not pitching a deal, but if one were to go down, I think the return would be more Matz-like.
