Well, he's really currently one of three options for a lefthanded reserve outfielder. The two righthanded reserve outfielders — Tyrone Taylor and Vidal Brujan (who is also an infielder) are all on MLB contracts and have no options. The lefthanded guys — Tauchman (minor-league contract), MJ Melendez (one option), and Jared Young (one option) — are somewhat more fungible. Which one they like the most, I think, is an open question. Mets Roster Central has Young at the top currently, but I think things are swinging in a Melendezian direction.

Tauchman strikes me as mostly having no mobility left and so, any points he puts on the scoreboard will likely be as a DH. He sits just behind MJ Melendez at the top of the Syracuse "outfield" depth chart, and joins Melendez and Jared Young as interesting potential late-game matchup specialists, should one of them be needed. Apart from that, he provides one more hurdle for Carson Benge to clear, and he instantly becomes a candidate for Citi Field's Josh Satin Eyebrow Hall of Fame, opening this summer.

Also, the Mets got Drew from Tampa Bay for Lucas Duda, so this represents the end of a term of service that goes all the way back to 2007.

Long legacy for a guy without a complete big-league season. Or even a half-complete season, really. And two seasons missed entirely.

Yeah, but you see, famous is largely a disqualifier. When we speak of "roster churn," it is more typically associated with ephemeral tenures, mid-season add-ons that never really plugged in. The point of "Did that even happen?" should mean to suggest folks you actually have to actively dial up to confirm that it did happen — acquired in forgotten transactions, shed in forgotten transactions. Jim Fregosi and Mickey Lolich were quite famously Mets, even if you did not want them to be. Both played wire to wire over the course of a season and Fregosi even made a yearbook cover, but ... Jeff Conine. One more stretch-run acquisition that actively made the team worse at a time when any marginal help might have made the difference. Jeff Conine, Larry Bowa, and Darin Ruf should form a pop group. Made no sense mentally in a Mets uniform and proved it on the field, at least for those who bothered remembering.

I would invite you to think more about Trot Nixon. Did it actually happen? Are there eyewitnesses? DNA evidence? What was the motive?

Those totally happened. Well publicized, well documented, even celebrated unions with highly celebrated figures. Ender Inciarte, on the other hand, remains an open question.

Sure, I'll open. The Cannister made the Mets look brilliant in April. I remember him as their top starter then, and without checking everybody else, I see that he was 4-1 with a 2.61 ERA before May 1. But things even out. He leveled off in May, looked bad in June, and got hurt for the rest of the season. But somebody's gotta be Mr. April, and maybe it was him!!

Knocked out halfway through 2025 with a ruptured Achilles tendon, that was no certainty. The offensive makeover was so profound, that one indeed may be tempted to overlook Astacio, Estes, and D'Amico added to the heart of rotation, which certainly was a bigger chunk of the starting rotation than we swapped out this winter. Each of them had runs of success (of varying lengths) before running out of steam (and falling off a cliff) in the second half. It was like the rotation collapse of 2025, except it happened six weeks earlier. Astacio's last 10 starts that year — trying to log enough innings to trigger his option before shutting it down — were some of the most poorly anticipated starts I can imagine. The guy was clearly too damaged to be effective, and everybody knew it, but he and Valentine had some sort of secret agreement to pretend otherwise.
