I would recommend just being persistent — try, err, and learn!

Carson Benge, who would have been a rock-solid choice to take over #8, has been outfitted in #3, inheriting the digit from Jesse Winker. As Mets by the Numbers has noted, one overlooked part of the Mets' offseason housecleaning is how many single-digit numbers were freed up, as 1, 2, 3, 6, and 9 were all sent packing. You can add the retirement of #5 in July and you can argue that a form of arithmophobia consumed the team.

I guess putting a number on a memorial patch when it is retired in the rafters in honor of another figure was seen to be a bad look. I tend to think memorial patches featuring numbers are silly, and the notion that the default way to honor someone is through veneration of the number is lazy and way out of hand. All that said, this patch shows about one half a second of thoughtfulness, and I don't know why the Mets don't call me about these things.

A year ago, I was your Opening Day starting thirdbaseman and cleanup hitter. I was coming off a breakthrough season, and the future was filled with green horizons. But now ... now I'm none of that. It appears I am to open this new season as (checks notes) DH against lefties. I get that I had a falloff, but I didn't kill a guy or anything. But the Mets are ambitious, and their patience must have limits, so here am I, looking to prove myself all over again. And I look at all the guys not here at all, and realize it could be worse. I imagine he is only there until he isn't. Joey Lucchesi, meanwhile, has been released by the Giants, and at least one guy I saw out there speculated that he should get Bryan Hudson's spot in the pen.

The Mets have a veteran relief staff, and any competition was going to be for a spot opened due to an injury that did not arise. Any room for Craig Kimbrel would have likely come at the expense of Bryan Hudson. Hudson had performed pretty poorly in spring games, but he is out of options and is one of two lefty relief options in the pen. While there has not been a transaction regarding Kimbrel, the veteran (and quite possibly future Hall-of-Famer) has been informed he is not making the squad. Alejandro Urias is 24 and has never played in affiliated ball or even in the stateside indy leagues, having spent his whole career in the Mexican summer and winter leagues. Judging from his productivity, he has clearly been dazzling them with his glove south of the border. Look for him to get one or two relief appearances and then go back to the starting grind. If injury does not make a decision for them, the Mets could continue with swinging the last two spots in the rotation back and forth to the bullpen, as their belief seems to be that Kodai Senga needs something like the once-a-week appearance rate he enjoyed in Japan. Barnes' release likely comes at his request, probably based on an agreement the Mets made when bringing him on board. Getting jettisoned a few days before the start of the season gives him a fighting hope at catching on with some team, that finds themselves at loose ends for reserve catchers, and we can't help but hope that the such team might be the Dodgers (as indirectly unkind as that might be to the hopes of Barnes and current Dodger catchers Will Smith and Dalton Rushing). And while an old-fashioned Ron Hodges Special of a career may not be laced through and through with glory, it is undeniably elegant. So while Barnes's presence in Mets camp was mostly insurance against a cascade breakdown in catcher health on the Mets roster, Mets Roster Central is pleased for more than one reason that this did not come to pass. Barnes' release likely comes at his request, probably based on an agreement the Mets made when bringing him on board. Getting jettisoned a few days before the start of the season gives him a fighting hope at catching on with some team, that finds themselves at loose ends for reserve catchers, and we can't help but hope that the such team might be the Dodgers (as indirectly unkind as that might be to the hopes of Barnes and current Dodger catchers Will Smith and Dalton Rushing). The Barnes release leaves four non-roster players hanging around as the Mets mop up camp, but as Craig Kimbrel has been told he has not made the roster, and Mike Tauchman is confronting surgery on his torn meniscus, for practical purposes, only Carson Benge and Cristian Pache remain as the Mets weigh their outfield options. Daniel Robert, Phillies reliever (he appeared against the Mets last year) just suffered the second cardiac arrest of his career today, during what was his first bullpen session after signing a minor-league deal in February. He first collapsed during a session back in October, which — after lifesaving medical care — he was fitted with an internal defibrillation device. He is reported to be stable and conscious (and out of the hospital!), but man.

MJ has already been farmed out. Pache and Young remain.

Oh, Vidal is in. He is very in. Pache vs. Young vs. Benge is another thing.

Miami walks it off against Parker Carlson, who was signed in January and has yet to throw a regular season professional pitch. That is the way things go in the spring, but a tough break for David, Son of Peter, who is our xPotG.

The Marlins score one a fielder's choice groundout, but the force play eliminated Dub Gleed on the basepaths, so even though the Fish are still up, you can all breathe a little easier now. And ... that's the inning. No Dub, no troub.

The Mets have a veteran relief staff and any competition was going to be for a spot opened due to an injury that did not arise. Any room for Craig Kimbrel would have likely come at the expense of Bryan Hudson. Hudson had performed pretty poorly in spring games, but he is out of options and is but one of two lefty relief options in the pen. While there has not been a transaction regarding Kimbrel, the veteran (and quite possibly future Hall-of-Famer) has been informed he is not making the squad. Alejandro Urias is 24 and has never played in affiliated ball or even in the state-side indy leagues, having spent his whole career in the Mexican summer and winter leagues, and to judge from his productivity, he has clearly been dazzling them with his glove south of the border. Whatever virtues he brings to the organization, Mets Roster Central has never seen that baseball cap he is wearing in his profile pic and we are utterly beguiled by it. His competition in this role is Ben Rortvedt, and Rorgasm remaining in big-league camp while Hayden is shipped out must feel like bad news, but maybe the Mets are just showcasing Rortvedt for a potential trade to a team looking to shore up at the end of camp. Teams rarely keep four catchers on the 40-Player Roster and things are crowded right now at catcher in the upper minors. A lot has been written about the Mets announcing their scheduled starters for the first five days of the schedule, and Sean Manaea's name not appearing there. Don't make too much of that. Look for him to get one or two relief appearances and then back to the starting grind. If injury does not make a decision for them, the Mets could continue with swinging the last two spots in the rotation back and forth to the bullpen, as their belief seems to be that Kodai Senga needs something like the once-a-week appearance rate he enjoyed in Japan. Carson Benge, Christian Pache, and Mike Tauchman remain in camp trying to elbow out stubborn Canadian Jared Young for the fifth outfield spot. As of publishing time, though, Tauchman appears to be getting bad news about a torn meniscus, so that looks like a three-man battle.
