Welcome to your first peek at the 2024 Mets — a looksee at how they kind of project on opening day, but clearly won't be at all. A few notes. 1. Traditionally, a guy out of options gets favoritism over a guy who ain't, even if the guy who ain't has the higher profile, at least until the former guy gets shed from the roster. But it takes too much suspension of disbelief to suggest that Michael Perez is ahead of Francisco Álvarez on any depth chart in the multiverse, so we'll save time on that. With bullpen backenders, though, the guys out of options, for now, get a bump over guys with a modestly higher profile. 2. The profile is calculated based on a proprietary formula measuring their performance to date. 3. Peyton Battenfield, calculations show, has the higher profile over Tylor Megill. Obviously, the Mets depth chart since Batty joined the organization has not reflected that. But with a new president and new manager, the choice between the two may revert to what the data says. So we're giving the edge to Peyton until (a) he's removed from the roster, or ( somebody new joins the team that bumps him, and would have bumped Megill. Either way, it's likely the most temporary of assignments. 4. The Mets have a very small free agency group this year. And Ottavino could exit it at any time by triggering his player option — something we believed was extremely unlikely until this past week. 5. The team is over their roster limit due to 60-Man Injured List assignments. That's gonna be an ugly crunch when the off-season officially begins and there is no Injured List. 6. All injured folk are assumped to be healthy on April 1 until otherwise noted. For now, the only guy explicitly reported as being unlikely to be ready to open the season is Bryce Montes de Oca. Quit chasing that velocity, kids. It'll lead you to a dark place. That's a big promise with the monkeys.

Maybe they'll resume play in the spring.

wOw! Guess he's not positioning himself for the Yankees job.

=smg58 post_id=138706 time=1696276487 user_id=62]Remind me to copy and paste this post sometime later in the week when it's Eppler's turn.

Yes, the schedule is out. No, I don't know what you mean.

Minasian made wealthy men of Noah Syndergaard and Matt Harvey, kindly rewarding them for what they had done as Mets. Actually, check that. Minasian made a wealthy man of Noah Syndergaard. Matt Harvey was enriched by ... Billy Eppler!

The [FIMG=35]https://1000logos.net/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/Font-Mets-500x294.jpg[/FIMG] chest plate is hidden behind Stoins' shoulder, for whatever that's worth. They have five alternating logos — Mets, mets.com, SNY, Citi, and Citi Field, but somehow the camera angle on Stoins makes the most important one nearly invisible. The logo is plainly there when the camera is on Cohen — again, for whatever that's worth.

A lot to digest. I'm still at 8:21 and he just threw some thanks to John Ricco and Omar Minaya.

The thing is ... you'd be a fool to make promises about an unsigned player, as it puts you in an awful bargaining position.

The two-year-max shelf-life on Mets managers in latter days is less than encouraging.

"Buck, what was going through your mind today, during your last game." "Trying to win. Hoping Butto had a good outing." You'd have to be under a very different kind of spell to identify that sort of answer as characteristic of a manager who throws his players under the bus. Later: "I was kidding Lindor. He kinda messed up by gettin' two RBIs yesterday, and I kept him in, and all of a sudden, he's hittin' fourth in the last inning. I really wanted ... I was hoping to send him out to shortstop and in the middle of the inning, take him out, so everybody can acknowledge the year he's had, but I couldn't take the chance of him not getting an opportunity [to reach 100 RBI]. I was really hoping that ball that Pete hit would fall, so's he'd have a pop at it. He still had a[n] ... unbelievable year. And, uh ... he's runnin' on fumes. He's been ... that way for about a week. Also everybody here appreciates what he does and brings. He's a special young man." Such a bus-toss. There's a lot you can disagree with Buck about, and I do, but it's hard to watch that and not see the guy as being very thoughtful about taking accountability upon himself.

¿Quien es Kate Feldman?

Thanks. I need to leave my poverty behind and get my Athletic subscription.

The Mets folded like a cheap tent in 2022 and were worse, much worse this season No, they didn't. They lost. I don't know how that isn't clear. I never understood this analogy anyhow. What is it about tents that cheap ones supposedly fold more effectively than pricey ones? It also gets crossed with the "folded like a cheap suit" cliché. Which product is it whose least expensive and/or most poorly made versions have become the standard for folding? Can anyone really blame the Mets for canning their manager? Plenty of people can, if they are of a mind to. You can too, if you want. Or not. It's a decision that many teams have gone in different directions on. Many of these team have been shown to have been right. Many of them have been shown to have been perfectly wrong. And wrong-headed too. For most, it's a cruel and stubborn mystery, which doesn't stop folks from having positions. If you have a position, I'd like to read about it, but I hope it has more substance than that "folded like a cheap tent" stuff. You know that's just late-night, AM talk-radio jive.

My wife hunted this down again tonight. Terrific to stumble back into it.

I'll happily bet against that.

I wouldn't think that. Buck's been through sub-.500 seasons. He's been through a 115-loss season. That's baseball.

Is Phillie's pitcher actually "Nelson," or did Casey Stengel forget his name?

I was ready to clap Francisco Álvarez off but look at him staying in there.

No there wasn't. And Wakefield pitching to Varitek after having Mirabelli catch for him all year. Made me poo my pants every time the Yankees got a runner on.

Pretty cool that Darling remembers that Dwight Gooden wore number 64 to Spring Training in 1984.

Centerfield Facebooking that his kid was one of today's official National Anthem singers.
