  1. The general memory is what a definitive side of the plus ledger for the Stearns era this guy was. His success as a starter was gradual, but it sure smashes the notion that once a pitcher is thrown down the reliever chute, he is done as a starter for his career. Too bad the Mets learned that lesson too late to do right by the likes of Seth Lugo, Aaron Heilman, and no doubt many more. The specific memory is the ball going clang off his leg, and him still pursuing it. He looked better with the beard.
  2. Sorry to post that. That damn song has been in my head all day and I had to shake it. The good news here is we will still get value from Tobias Myers!
  3. I understand, but this thread is about evaluating the deals, not evaluating the situation that put the situation that has led up to the deals. Maybe I should just crawl in the closet and weep.
  4. Fastball Freddy told me "Hey good bye" Off to Tampa, I asked, "Why? Why?" Tampa's ass, Tampa's cruel Au revoir, mon ami. S'agit-il d'un coup? But he don't stop, for no shortstop He went out to the parking lot And he got in his car and he drove real far And you cry all night, till you see a light And it comes right down, and it lands on the ground And out come some wannabe stars One can run, one's got a gun But you read the thread, and you shit your bed! And read about these wannabe stars You go out at night, egging cars You egg Cadillacs, a Coupe deVille 'Cause of Aidan Smith, and Gary Gill Hill And you don't stop, you keep on egging cars Then, when there's no more cars, you go out at night And egg some bars where Met fans meet Emelien Pitre, what the fuck? Canadian shortstop, gotta suck! He broke his toe, he moves too slow And Uncle Steve, I'm through with cars I'm egging bars, yeah, hall to hall Citi Field, wall to wall I'm gonna egg 'em all Rapture, be pure! David Stearns? still a Brewer? Don't strain your brain, take the Seven Train You'll be singin' through the pain Said, don't stop! Do punk rock
  5. Fate: You've had a nice run, but this is the 2024 Dodgers, and the dream is coming to a conclusion. You'd do well to accept that. Tyrone Taylor: No.
  6. We knew it had come to this a month ago and probably more. So of course we all knew he was going to trading off parts, and there would of course be outrage if he didn't. I know I hate trading players, but I just don't like damning a guy if he does and damning him if he doesn't. That leaves a lot to be desired, as far as analysis goes.
  7. Luis Robert — tough guy to find the right deal for and they would have had eat some money, but one would have thought some hopeful team would want an everyday centerfielder even with a question mark on his bat. The Mets went for Cedric Mullins last year. Is it too much to think some other team is as naïve as the 2025 Mets? Bo Bichette — it barely feels like he's been here for long stretches this season, but he's still here. Yeah, his opt-out seemingly makes him effectively a player in his walk year, but any team taking him on might end up holding a pretty heavy bag if he doesn't opt out. Francisco Alvarez — there was a market for Adley Rutschman, so there probably was for him, but he's always got that mystery over whether he's hurt, and his lack of productivity with runners on base would make me shy. Luis Torrens — I can't imagine teams weren't after him, but the Mets held. Devin Williams — signed through 2028, and has a Bobby Bonilla thingy in his contract where he gets big ol' deferred payments until 2045. Francisco Lindor — did anybody think there were really talks about him? He's signed through 2031, and depending on his angle of decline going forward, the money isn't that bad, but that's a lot to take on by a team just trying to navigate the next 2+ months. Kodai Senga — mmmm ... that would have been a lot of salary they would have been asked to eat. For that money, they might as well keep him home and keep trying to get him right.
  8. I'm not with Radar. Nobody in the world calls David Stearns "Boy Genius." And expecting that the team was to use the deadline to improve their 2026 prospects is a false and moving standard. The greater point, that the Mets management bringing the organization to this point is a demonstration of failure is point that is an obvious and uncontested observation that does not need straw man arguments and false standards to represent.
  9. "We can agree to disagree" is always a good way of saying one has no intention of backing up what they claim.
  10. This contest was a non-starter either way. Not only did the Mets not find a deal for Robert they liked, but with Taylor going as part of a package along with Clay Holmes, it is hard to peg down what the ultimate market value was that the Mets discovered for him. Something like 20-25% of Jefferson Rojas?
  11. Un-noted in this deal is that the Mets claimed catcher Shawn Ross off waivers from the Pirates yesterday, taking him out of the picture as a potential Dodger backup, and pre-replacing Rortvedt. Rortvedt himself had previously been claimed off waivers from the Dodgers back in February, so he's probably the guy the Dodgers wanted, as he and the staff know each other and stuff, but cornering the market on waiver wire catchers is strategery!
  12. Indifferently swiping through social media, I was fed a trailer for a film called American Summer. I don't know how I made it as far as I did. It had a baseball theme, and those are almost invariably bad. It had Steve Gutenberg, and he has a lower batting average than baseball movies. It had Christie Brinkley, the weird digital pristineness and perfect hair and family themes of a "faith" movie without being an explicit faith movie so far as I could see. These are all indications of general badness, and the story as unfolding in the trailer was even worse than the sum of the parts listed above. I didn't know what besides inertia was making me keep watching and suddenly ... holy shit! That's Lee Mazzilli in this turkey! The Mets Hall of Fame and a Steve Gutenberg film all in one year. Lee Mazzilli can't be stopped!
  13. And as demonstrated by that catch, he was — and will presumably be into perpetuity — the last Met to take the field in #15.
  14. Glorious. Concrete and specific memories are the best memories. Why nobody had mentioned The Tyrone Taylor Game until you did is embarrassing. It really shows why we are a fifth-place forum. Thanks for picking us up. Also, Lourdes Gurriel's worst nightmare:
  15. I don't need an apology, and I nothing I wrote suggested agreement or disagreement.
  16. Do you really think there is a trade to be had that is going to cause Radar to flip?
  17. Orioles and Tigers are each 2 1/2 games out of the Wild Card race, and each watching their management fold the tent around them. Pirates, however, are 3 1/2 games out and making their play.
  18. Gave a full-range of outcomes. Good enough for an MLB reserve outfielder on a winning team in 2024. Not good enough for an MLB reserve outfielder on a winning team in 2025. Really good for an MLB reserve outfielder on a winning team in 2026. That last one kind of guaranteed he was going to be traded to a winning team. It was, like, The Three Faces of Tommy Pham, except he wasn't Tommy Pham. The most indelible memory is that he slammed a homer in what should have been his last game*, and the blast went so far that it felt like he was going to be traded before the ball landed, or at least before he crossed home plate. A solid pro. Brought a positive but professional demeanor to the park whether he was going good or going poorly. I'm not an Instagram user, but his is all full of shots of him interacting with his daughter and it's adorbs. Part of a rapidly diminishing club of Mets veterans of the 2024 post-season. Probably saw more time in that run than was good for the team, but his strong September helped get them there. * He pinch ran in the ninth inning last night, in a situation that was so non-competitive that I'm not sure the booth noted his appearance.
  19. Some of the guys we're going to see down the stretch will be guys we already know, but have been hurt all year — like Dedniel Núñez and the like. Other bullpenners will be be guys that have been on the shuttle but maybe will get a longer looksee. But yeah, I look forward to some prospecty prospects.
  20. As much as the kids from Poverty Valley hated me and the kids from Working Class Gardens, God, we all hated the kids from Rich Hill.
  21. Jacob deGrom and Pete Alonso have entered the chat.
  22. Holy fuckinfrass. It's like that pocket-universe episode of Star Trek: TNG. Guys are disappearing every time you turn around.
  23. That Rutschman deal is still pretty much a kick in the head. I guess it kind of puts a target on Francisco Alvarez' back also.
