Is this gonna be the AI Cover Derby?

While Freeman's numbers in that situation are undeniable, it's hard to say that there's a right way to pitch through Ohtani, Betts, and Freeman with the game on the line and the winning run in scoring position. That said, intentionally walking Mookie to load the bases for Freeman probably isn't the way you should do it. You can at least try to be cute and perfect to Betts and if you lose him on a walk or a hit-batsman, you do. But just surrendering to him means you don't have that option with Freeman. You have to come right after him, and he knows it. And that's what Cortes did. I think part of the appeal of walking Betts there is psychological. You're one batter closer to running through the three-MVP gauntlet, so you fool yourself that you're that much safer. His limping through the Mets series aside, he probably scares me more now than he ever did as a Brave. I think part of that is that the Mets can't easily put in a lefthanded specialist to go after him with the game on the line.

And here is his head. Gotta say, extra innings can be fun without that stupid free runner.

We can all also agree that there should be a statue of Derek Bell in front of Citi Field.

Bird and May also shared a tenure setting up Rich Gossage with the comically unstable Howser/Michael/Lemon Yankees of 1980-81. I will henceforth refer to this as the MayBird Era.

What a weird Mets career. Appeared twice before March was even done, got suspended in game two of the opening series for allegedly throwing at (but not hitting) Rhys Hoskins in alleged retaliation for Hoskins coming in hard on Jeff McNeil when sliding in to second the day before, presumably despite barely knowing McNeil. Gets his manager suspended along with him, presumably making Mendoza the first Mets manager ever to garner his first suspension before his first win, or even his first road game. Appears in one game after his suspension and, despite supposedly taking a hit for his team and teammates, gets immediately DFA'd. Appears for three other big-league teams before the season is done, prospering for none. Possibly, if his teammates remember his loyalty (if not his success), he'll get piece of a postseason share. Also has the misfortune of being conflated (in my mind) with Jorge López, who expedited his exit by gifting a fan with a game-used baseball glove.

Perhaps the original Dark Horse: https://metsrostercentral.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/grote.jpg>

Sean Manea is listed among those under contract, but as you know, he has an opt-out, so he just as easily could be outside the circle of 2025 projections. We've elected to listen to Valter, who suggested we keep him around until he publicly expresses a desire to exercise his option. But if you want to imagine what the team looks like today without Manea, plug Tylor Megill (who amazingly still has an option) in there. If you don't believe Blackburn will be ready to answer the bell, you can mentally add Max Kranick or somebody. The three-true-outcome scorpion is sure biting our prospects in the AFL, with all three putting up tiny batting averages attached to otherwise semi-respectable OPSes. Drew Gilbert (.188 / .278 / .500 // .778) Jacob Reimer (.158 / .448 / .316 // .764) Jett Williams (.206 / .357 /.353 //.710) The same sort of productivity that got Dave Kingman ridiculed a generation ago is the norm. It's actually, like, the super-norm, with player after player racing to out-Kingman Kingman.

The difficult part of comparing the two cases is that they are about 15 years apart, and practices and policies have changed over time, specifically to combat this issue.

I'd kind of rather see a movie about the song. I'm sure there's a lot of excellent stuff in there, but I'm certain that there's going to be a lot of playing fast and loose with the facts. One thing if I'm not sure of (though I'm sure some reading could catch me up) is whether this should be read as a reminder of when the program was a truly subversive exercise, and therefore a call to arms, or an attempt to sell the notion that the show still is truly subversive. Side question: How inevitable was it that the show would become just another institution that won't die despite itself? Second side question that's already been asked: Is the first run of Saturday Night Live cocaine's greatest accomplishment?

I certainly thought I had him on my ballot, but got messed up switching guys around. My mistake and my apologies. 1) José Iglesias 2) Mark Vientos 3) Luís Torrens 4) Reed Garrett 5) Tyrone Taylor 6) Dedniel Nuñez 7) José Butto 8) Christian Scott 9) Sean Reid-Foley 10) David Peterson And there really is a strong argument that Torrens doesn't belong among the eligible at all, as he started the season outside the organization, and so not only wouldn't have been anybody's bet going in, but sort of couldn't have been.

I like awards that utilize the MVP voting system. Vote for up to 10 players with 14 points for #1, nine, points for #2, eight, seven, six, and so on. It creates more back-end action on the leaderboard, and that usually makes for more excitement. 1) José Iglesias 2) Luís Torrens 3) Reed Garrett 4) Tyrone Taylor 5) Dedniel Nuñez 6) José Butto 7) Christian Scott 8) Sean Reid-Foley 9) David Peterson 10) Danny Young

After just a few MLB starts had triggered Fernandomania, Ralph Kiner (I think) asked Mets catcher Alex Treviño if he had faced Valenzuela when the two were teenagers in Mexico. Treviño replied — to the best of my memory — that even though he was two years older than Fernando, he couldn't touch his stuff with his bat. "So, you think he's going to win Rookie of the Year?" Ralph asked. "No, I think he's going win Rookie of the Year, Cy Young, MVP, and whatever else there is," Treviño answered. (Waiting for G-FaFiF to set me straight on the details of this account.)

This is something all baseball fans can agree on. Tom Seaver's number deserves the correct font on his statue at Citi Field. Sign the petition!

Time can help decide what makes for appropriate statuary. If the presence is already casting a shadow across the decades, as the kids who watched him themselves grow up and make big decisions in the world, then that would probably get it done. I wouldn't complain, but if it were up to me, I'd say no. The guy was a MAGA jerk to me on Twitter.

Stamina is certainly one characteristic that supposedly tracks you into the starter or relief role. Another is diversity of offerings. There are plenty of starters who made good with two pitches (Seaver [mostly], Ryan [totally], deGrom [mostly], and Glavine, among others), but when development staffs are sorting them out in the minors, if you have one or two effective pitches they typically send you to the bullpen, and if you have three or four, they tend let you start. I tend to think, at the major league level, it's all luck. If there's an opening in the rotation, and you have one or two good starts, you get pigenholed as a starter. If there isn't, but there's a need in the bullpen, and you flourish there, good luck getting a chance to start. If you've started all through the minors, but you have the bad luck to not succeed immediately as a starter, and whoever you were subbing for returns from his injury, and you hang around the pen and get a few big outs, great, but you might as well tattoo "CAN ONLY RELIEVE" onto your forehead. It's unfortunate, but it's the nature of tracking.

I withdraw the characterization. They could even return to trying to establish him in the rotation, but I'm almost certain that they won't.

Maton doesn't necessarily need to be signed. The Mets hold an option on him. I disagree that it's really hard to sign effective relievers, so much as it is hard for relievers to maintain a consistent level of effectiveness from year to year — especially ones who have been around long enough to reach free agency. But yeah, the Mets have developed some terrific relievers. They haven't always stuck around, but Jason Isringhausen had 300 saves. It's just the nature of relieving that for many of the best arms, relieving is their second act. Sometimes, you don't catch on as a starter when you come up and transition to relieving with your next team. Isringhausen, Berenguer, and Dotel, among others fall into this category. The question is whether you're willing to stay with an arm through that transition. In a different world, the label on José Butto might be "failed starter," traded to the Cardinals this offseason for a player-to-be-named-later. Instead, they've taken a different tack, and he may well develop into somebody terrific out of the pen.

Yeah, R.A. Dickey is probably the darkest horse to come the furthest.

Despite his hefty physique, he was a terrific athlete, who could hit, run, and field with grace. In emergencies, the Dodgers used him in left and right and at first. I think he got opportunities to pinch-run and pinch-hit too. His family was part of his story. It was supposedly a baseball-crazy clan in which his older brothers recognized early that he was the true talent, and they took it upon themselves to carefully portion out how much they'd allow him to pitch. Tommy Lasorda had no such scruples and, even in his rookie year, h was showing signs over over-work. As noted, he was driven into the ground by 26. The screwball is a brutal pitch on the arm for a reliever. For a starter logging 250+ innings per season, it was crippling. You'd think he was MLB's first Mexican-born player the way his story exploded onto the scene, but he was immediately a national phenomenon in a sport known for regional followings. His tale and Vin Scully as the tale-teller were just too irresistible a take on the American dream, and while much of it was undoubtedly mythologized, a big part of him felt true. Great hair, too. Also, when the Mets traded middle reliever Carlos Diaz and utility infielder Bob Bailor for Sid Fernandez after only six September Dodger innings for El Sid in 1983, it felt like we were getting Fernandomania II on the cheap, and we kind of did.

This is good. I had a series of post-season awards I wanted to put to a vote after the World Series, but I didn't have this one cued. Related Question: Who should the Dark Horse Met Award be named for? José Valentin? Benny Agbayani?
