  1. Well, nothing was out of reach for Marlin outfielders in the ninth.
  2. Special thanks to Keith endorsing spectacularly rich guys hiding their money from the tax man.
  3. =Centerfield post_id=189258 time=1744220445 user_id=65] I think small sample size is only part of the reason win percentages are higher.
  4. You are moving the goalposts here. I return the thread to its creator.
  5. As for "lower-round gems," that reinforces the point that highly rated prospects are less reliable bets to succeed in baseball. It does not dispute it.
  6. It has something to do with it.
  7. That is why you play the games. A lot of good players will not prosper at the big-level, mostly because a lot of other good players are dead set on stopping them. If one guy fails, you hopefully wish him well as you root that the next guy does not, all the while knowing that it is better than even money that you are going to be disappointed. The very best teams in football win about 80% of the time. The very best teams in basketball, about 70%. But the best teams in baseball win about 60% of the time. The likelihood that a top prospect becomes a top player is similarly skewed. It is a game with frustration wired into the framework.

Against the Braves!! Both could save the Mets some minor embarrassment by joining the MLB roster by 4/15, as they currently don't seem to have any US-born African American players on their roster. MRC could very well be wrong about this. One might figure that experience would get him a AAA assignment, but the Mets have been stockpiling a lot of relievers with MLB experience. Even still, while Mets Roster Central could only fit him on the Binghamton roster with his profile, we suspected the Mets might keep him at extended spring training and not activate him until there was an opening in Syracuse. But nope, Bingo it is. No such shame for Jon Singleton, who really does single a ton. Andinson Ferrer, we suspect, got caught tampering with a parking meter, or possibly using loaded dice in a game of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons. Yeah, I'm wondering if the reports that Henry Blanco was among those present have him confused or conflated with Tony. Henry may well have been there, but (a) he's Venezuelan, ( he is an active big-league coach, and © there is a season going on. Hank, in fact, currently works for the Nationals, but there are no stories of his reported presence and survival on the Nats' site.
  10. Shoot me a message when you come to Baltimore.
  11. That is disappointing, but here is Clem catching some rays at The Trop. [fimg=500]https://metsrostercentral.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/clem.jpg[/fimg]
  12. Yeah, working with five infielders means that once you make one strategic substitution, you're in a spot if you have to make an injury substitution. And that's an issue with the roster, and they are a lot more screwed if one of the other guys gets hurt mid game than Pete. But when it comes to firstbasemen, the short answer is that everybody is the backup. Luis Torrens has played over there (as well as second and third) as a big-leaguer. Jesse Winker and Hayden Senger both have some minor-league experience.
  13. Braves: hate the culture, hate the chop, hate them fleeing a perfectly good and perfectly young ballpark for the suburbs of Cobb County. I hate how I can't figure out what the deal is with their right field seats, but they https://www.rateyourseats.com/shared/suntrustpark-chophouseterracedeck-20180227_6784.jpglook like some sort of giant galvanized metal press box. Phils: hate the hostility, hate the racial hangups that always seems to follow them around, hate the lionization of the ridiculous 1993 team. Nats: hate the unis, hate the suburban Virginia bandwagon jumping fans copying their hostility from studied hostility the Phils fans brought to their park, hate the flyovers and empty patriotism, hate the crappy contemporary country music. Marlins: hate their unwillingness to just be what they're going to be, constantly churning through uniforms, parks, affiliations, managers and rosters. Mostly I just want the Mets to win. There is a lot to like in most teams, and most of them have at least a little bit of Octavio Dotel in their story.
  14. Was the subject of a classick MoFo thread that we had saved here for a while. Joined Kenny Rogers as an unfortunate resident of the back end of the pen in those marathon 1999 playoff games against the Braves. Between extra innings and Al Leiter's early exit in the decider, every reliever was seemingly forced into use every game.
  15. https://www.newsweek.com/sports/mlb/3-mlb-players-among-survivors-jet-set-night-club-collapse-dominican-republic-report-2056833A nightclub collapse in The Dominican Republic has apparently led to 15 deaths, along with hundreds escaping from the collapse and the rubble. Among the survivors are a handful of baseball figures including former Mets Ocatavio Dotel and Henry Blanco. Dotel reportedly had to be dug out, and was badly injured. Nelson Cruz very sadly lost his sister. She had been the sitting governor of Montecristi Province. 16. Clem Burke in the right foreground of the shot, going for a swim at The Tropicana with his Blondie bandmates.
  17. Big money to spend to commit to the team that just got swept by the Mets.
  18. Footloose Observation #12: When the daughter goes to the drive-in diner and gets the whole place moving by putting a cassette recording of Cameo's "Dancing in the Sheets" on her boombox, she is presented as a champion of resistance and free spirits, but in fact, when her father shows up shortly after and hits the boombox' STOP button, he is the real hero. Footloose Observation #13: The probably unintentional joke at the center of this movie is that these teens have spent their lives in a town that has banned dancing at least since they were five or six, but when they are finally allowed to dance, they are initially shy, but then turn into professional-quality breakdancers like a switch has been thrown, laying down The Worm and The Moonwalk like they invented them.
  19. Having rewatched, it is worth pointing out that this film features a brief, unbilled performance by Tiajuan Walker.
  20. Earl was a smart guy, running a terrific team and running it well, but his people skills were something else. I took my suitcase and my baseball bag, and started walking down the hallway. Just before I got to the door, there was another office on the left-hand side. I looked up and it said, “manager's office.” The door was open about six to eight inches, and I could see Earl Weaver sitting at his desk. I set my stuff down. I kinda pushed open the door a little bit and just kinda stood there in the doorway. He was writing something down at his desk and he looked up. He said, “What do you want?!” I was shocked and taken aback. I'm just trying to catch my breath basically, and went, “I just wanna let you know I'm here.” He looked at me with a blank stare and he said, “Is that all?” I said, “Yeah, that's all.” That was June 29, 1970. I don't think he talked to me again 'til like 1972. He was not a man of many words to his players. He kinda stayed aloof. It was shocking to me. I thought that he would get up and shake my hand, congratulate me, welcome me in the big leagues, ask if I got a place to stay. You know, something warm and welcoming. It was a real shock to me. I was really taken aback to be very honest with you. I was very uncomfortable from that point on for the next two years being in a Baltimore Orioles uniform, as long as the manager was concerned. It was the strangest thing. This was the first time in my life, of all the sports I had ever played, that a coach didn't immediately warm up to me or immediately welcome me. I had no experience with that. It was the most uncomfortable thing that I had experienced in my life until that point. I didn't know how to handle it. — Bobby Grich
  21. Edgy MD wrote: Weaver would best be described as something less than a mentor to Davey. Not according to Davey. He says his first manager, Hank Bauer, was a nincompoop (who won in 1966 due to dumb luck), and then he praises at length Weaver's attitude in managing players and confronting umpires and manipulating lineups and rotations, and then (after a stay with the Braves which he glosses over, other than noting his freaky HR mark a few times) he was gone from MLB, so I don't know who you'd pick as his mentor. Maybe no one? Being impressed by some aspects of somebody's work does not make them your mentor. Being un-impressed by somebody else isn't particularly relevant.
  22. Somehow, Kranick bailed the Mets manager, coach, and trainer out.
