1. Nimmo still doesn't look all that comfortable getting around.
2. Should have set Soto in moto when Alonso had them 3-2. I would feel confident that Alonso can put anything over the plate into play.
3. =Fman99 post_id=187994 time=1743101105 user_id=86] =roger_that post_id=187985 time=1743096132 user_id=128] Pleasantly surprised to see Acuna and Taylor listed.
4. He is the top Mets prospect and, with Christian Scott on the recovery shelf, one of the ripest ones on the pitching side too. He has a good chance to open as high as Syracuse, where he finished relatively meekly last season after strong partial campaigns through Brooklyn and Bingo. He only got four inning in big-league camp but that gave him a chance to show off his old-school backup slider and his older-school seventies appearance. Seriously, he looks like he should be driving a dirt bike through a Roger Corman movie. What his next act will be is the question on the table. 5. Mike Piazza.
6. David Wright.
7. Nice comeback by Kranick!
8. He's a veteran starter brought in to plug a hole until somebody else steps up, and overachiever that he is, he went and got out of the way immediately. His Scott Erickson comparison score is skyrocketing. But eventually, we will see this guy, right? May? July? September? What will happen then? Let us know, because these things matter. 9. Part I: 34 players hit .300 for the Mets Part II: They did it a total of 63 times among them. Part III: Twelve Mets have done it more than once.
10. This commercial is one of those that's ingrained in my memory, word for word, sound for sound, note for note. It was in heavy, heavy rotation on "Channel Nine" during Mets game in its time. I watched the youtube clip and was able to anticipate every single word of dialogue, right down to the "Sing. You better sing, boy" I know that there are many members here who are about my age, and thus, from the same generation. Youse probably remember this commercial very well, too, if you were watching the Mets, which I know youse were. The last guy to (sternly but sonorously) tell him to sing kind of looks like Lou Rawls, but almost certainly is not, as Rawls was already a big shot by 1972, and would go on to be a voice of Budweiser a few years later. BUT ... I am almost just as certain that the SHHH ... guy near the end is Paul Benedict.
11. It seems like a dumber idea than it did yesterday. The interesting part of it is that it clearly is a product of a strategy to aim for the whole city as a fanbase, rather than just a niche within it. I salute the mission, but not so much the execution (a slice of pizza racing a giraffe racing a skyscraper?). I also wonder if they looped Jeffrey Goldberg in on the strategy sessions.
12. Um ... 34 guys. If I understand the question correctly.
13. Tommie never took a bad picture. And he looked like a teenager in every shot. He also must've been a hell of an outfielder, because he played eight years in The Show without ever hitting a lick. Was a Kansas City A before the Mets and an Oakland A after.
14. Yeah, we have searched the World Wide Web for reports of the re-signing of either of Los Luíses Morenos, but the records we have show them both as free agents, which clearly isn't true, because one of them has been appearing in Spring Training games and kind of killing it. We will try to get to the bottom of of his status (and specific identity!), along with that of Mateo Gil in a coming update. are recovering from a torn UCL and the subsequent surgical procedure, but our staff did a deep dive, and every one we were able to get information on — even the lone outfielder among our pitchers — was indeed recovering from the same injury. The goodish news is that many (some) of these guys are already in the late stages of recovery, have participated in spring workouts, and are presumably raring to go, but the organization is having them sit out the early part of the season to protect them from the vagaries of spring weather. Getting released at the start of spring training sucks, but at least you can gripe that the team didn't give you a real chance after you spent the off-season getting healthy and fine-tuning your game and getting in the best shape of your life. But for Rocky, getting released at the end of spring training, he gets to go home knowing that the team took a long, hard look at his ****, and weren't impressed. His one season in the DSL backed that up. His batting average was low, but also, an alarmingly low number of his hits were for extra bases. He could maybe pad that number with a high walk rate, but that wasn't in his package either. Perhaps he was a speed demon, but when you rarely get on base, that isn't going to show up much, and nine stolen bases certainly weren't going to save him. You might say that he was the complete package. Get a good look at Troy Schreffler's last name. There is an R in there right after the CH that you might tend to gloss over, but it belongs there, as counter-intuitive as that may seem. He is probably pissed at this strange late-season trade for a mysterious bounty, as he is from Harrisburg, PA, and possibly grew up loving the Phightin' Phils, but Harrisburg is also the AAA Nats' home, so maybe allegiances are torn. We are speculating that he is somehow the return on the trade for Michael Hobbs and his mustache, and the Mariners have sent someone or something to Philadelphia to complete a three-way deal. Anyhow, Schreffy is a good speed and defense guy out of the University of Maryland, who has been working in hitting labs to stay back and turn on the ball. Look for him in Brooklyn.
15. I have never heard the phrase deployed to denigrate women, though I have seen it deployed with a sexual connotation. Please forgive any unintended meaning. I first encountered it from the 1981 Cure song "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpgNx89B8Y4 ," and later a 1966 collection of short stories, https://www.enotes.com/topics/patrick-boyle/criticism/martin-levinAt Night, All Cats Are Grey by Patrick Boyle. Neither the song nor the book are what you might call "cheery," but they got me interested in the French idiom from which both titles were sourced. It seemingly has many nuanced meanings.
16. The camera does not see the ball very well at all in throws across the diamond. It is far easier to pick up a fast-moving ball when it is being thrown directly at the camera or directly away from it, which is why those angles are used to show us pitcher/batter confrontations. So most of what we see to judge when the ball arrives is the response of the fielder receiving the ball, which is always going to be a beat behind. To me, it (almost) always looks like the firstbaseman's foot comes off the bag before the ball is received, but I have long since accepted that this is an illusion and have adapted my understanding of my perception accordingly.
17. You don't have to suppose. Tom Seaver's ninth-inning ERA is readily available, and it was 2.81, but he'll have a lot of vehement supporters here even as he continues to make us shake our heads.
18. La nuit, tous les chats sont gris.
19. Retired longtime Yankee Brett Gardner and his wife Jessica have announced the passing of their 14-year-old son Miller following an unspecified illness that several family members contracted during a vacation.
20. It is a distinct flaw, it seems to me that, in the WAR formulations, that all innings are treated the same. Thus relief specialists produce universally low numbers relative to their teammates, no matter what situations they are deployed in. This is also a reality in the ZIPS projections of FWAR. Therefore Mets ninth-inning specialist Edwin Diaz finds his thriving reviewed after third-string catchers, and seventh-starters, and whatever Wyatt Young is. He is a fascinating guy to look at. Untouchable in 2022. Injured in 2023. Mostly indifferent in 2024, but he sure had a few big moments, as closers are set up to do. What is next could be fire or ice. Nobody knows better than you do. 21. The Nick Madrigal thread was only going to generate a limited amount of gambling due to his extended outage, but the next guy down the list is sure to be ... Christian Scott? Damn, man has HWHTi25? moved into the training room or what? But this is the price of being comprehensive. CS threw for the first time last week after UCL surgery on September 18, 2024, so he's more than likely done for the season, but ... maybe there is the Fallacy of the Round Number at work in scheduling the recovery time following this surgery. Maybe the same poor logic that has made 100 pitches the target number for a pitcher to throw in a game has made one calendar year the target return time for UCL surgery. It's a thought, right? Anyhow, I guess things are worth speculating about Christian Scott's season. Beard or no beard? Chipotle or Qdoba? Will he finally read Moby Dick? 22. They throw over José Iglesias for this guy and then he almost immediately fractures his shoulder on a non-contact play. Putin has got to be behind this, somehow, right? Will he get back on the field? Will he pull a Jed Lowrie and make but a token appearance before his contract expires, just so he can tell his grandkids he was a Met? Will the only shots of him in true Mets togs be digital manipulations and AI-generated abominations? I imagine you have knowledge in this area.
