  1. Yes, but the offseason argument floated by more than one columnist was that Citifield and it's dimension, as a home park, has been and would remain a liability to the shortsighted team, when evidence so far suggests the opposite is true.
  2. Benjamin Grimm wrote: It was a good movie; I enjoyed it. I particularly liked that it didn't provide the ending that, I suspect, most moviegoers were probably expecting. Yeah, but, maybe I'm thick, but it didn't provide much of an ending at all. He was on a little bit different track from where he started, but not all that much. His loyalty to his protege was pretty over-the-top considering she fucked up everything, and the denoument was lifted right out of The Devil Wears Prada, of all movies.
  3. I'd guess he's Brooklyn bound, but he's not on the extended spring training roster either.
  4. I recommend WonderBoys for whatever ails you, and I actually consider disregarding Michaeld Douglas to be somethign of a hobby. The point holds though. Downey is another smuggie in that.
  5. Why is he cooking for himself in A-Ball? He should have some shiny happy family cooking for him.
  6. 1972 is one of the seasons that is analagous to the injury bug of last year. The casuality list was so long that Bill James' Win Shares has Duffy Dyer as the team's MVP. (We don't.)
  7. Was it his 2 2/3 of winning scoreless relief over Lexington last night that inspired me to gobble this guy up? Not quite. Is it his awsome Burnitz-like chin-and-sideburns combination? No. Do I have a soft spot for 23rd-round draft choices with an undistinguished debut season under their belts? No I do not. What moves my heart is that, playing in the Sally League, they have their shit so not together, that --- rather than keep their files carefully so they know which photo goes to which player --- they make the player hold up a name plate so as to make clear who he is for the team's press office and, when the player makes the news, the newspaper's photo editor. So when said photo editor is too lazy or disengaged to crop out that name plate, his parents see their son in the paper posing for what looks like a Mudville mugshot. Anybody who endures that sort of indignity in pursuit of his dream is OK with me. Let's go, Juan Iglesia.
  8. Both performances, though, are infused with smugness.
  9. Really, can that possibly be bad? Is there anything that adds more to a movie than rock 'n' roll file footage of bellbottom 70s debauchery?
  10. Frayed Knot wrote: Certainly the actor was hired - at least in part - for his youthful and non-worldly look. Only other time I've seen him was as an extra in a 'House' episode, he played a dork. He was a pretty dorky priest.
  11. Just relax. The remake of Ice Castles is coming out this year.
  12. I hear you. I've never seen anything that ranked above modestly awful on a bus, but I think at least part of that has to do with the viewing experience.
  13. Sounds like the kid of comprehension one gets watching a movie on a bus. Dad wasn't a football coach but rather owned a string of fast food restaruants. She was an interior designer. The Theisman play in the prologue was to explain the defintiion of "the blind side" in a Tim McCarvery "assume the viewer is completely unfamilar with the sport" kind of way.
  14. Game six, son. What the hell was wrong with you?
  15. Watching this NOW!!!! Nobody told me Tim McGraw was in it. I don't know country superstars too well, and couldn't recognize Tim without the goatee, the hat, and/or maybe some spikes in his hair, but he doesn't look like him, he looks like Tug. Like a lot.
  16. It's an automatic. Tries to get you in as well as the younger kid hip to that whole eighties vibe, if often only ironically. I mean, what defined the eighties more than Harry Hamlin/Burgess Meredith action movies? Really, I'm certain all they think about in Hollywood is "How can we can this market segment and that market segment behind the same piece of shit?" The original CotT was Ray Harryhausen's last film, but the guy is still above ground thirty years later.
  17. I just thought he wasn't much of an actor. I like how he just walks right up during funerals and starts homilizing. Cut through all that liturigical mumbojumbo. Who does that?
  18. I think about this movie all the time. My wife was sickened by it --- she can't stand any film with a rape in it. There are certainly noticeable gaps in the script. But Eastwood says things with the actors and the camera that the script cannot. What did you think of the priest? He seemed kind of ham-handed to me. Maybe he was hired for his face and not his performance skills. On the other hand, you can read any awkwardness in his delviery as an expression of his struggling un-genuineness as a person.
  19. Besides experimenting with Sha Na Na, I'm not sure.
  20. That would be very bad from my point of view.
  21. I was 11 once, and I've got to imagine that he noticed the boob. Cherie Currie was in the original cut of This Is Spinal Tap, playing the lead singer of a band called The Dose that opens a few gigs for the Tappers and infects them all with VD.
  22. Valdespin has snuck into a couple of spring training games and has just gotten a hit and a stolen base. Showed some range earlier, too. Wearing 87.
  23. Damn. Exploded. And it's altogether possible (probable? probable) that the ushers are playing the part of the umps in my memory.
  24. Two things from the Henderson walkoff that my memory insists on that I need confirmed or exploded. 1) That the umpires participated in the curtain call. They may have been groundskeepers, but I remember seeing the backs of the crew clustered around home clapping as Henderson re-emerged. 2) That Henderson had already begun undressing, and came out of the dugout with his jersey already shed, and wearing suspenders over his three-quarter-sleeve undershirt.
