  1. I understand the weaknesses of the article. The list of American mayors who were fine writers is short. But you're putting a lot on him that isn't there. We keep saying it's directed at "kids these days" and it's not. He cites "the last couple of generations" and doesn't exempt himself or his peers. To me, that's going back a ways. And you don't need to tell a black mayor about discrimination, but that's not what he's talking about. He certainly doesn't say all things were better, so we shouldn't be throwing that at him either. The issue to me isn't so much that Reyes walked out. It's that so many folks think that's OK. I'm sure Boggs and Williams got their share of grief. I just don't care, because they weren't representing me.
  2. logically that makes sense, but I'm tired of looking at contracts and saying "Well, that should go badly at the end of the contract"..we there yet? What about all those innings Halladay has thrown? can we get there already? Well, I don't care one way or another about Halladay. I intend to have my team beat the Phillies on the field. But I don't think I should have to enumerate the sour contracts the Yankees hold. Posada got $13.1 million to hit like Jason Bay this season without the defense. Jeter is a load nobody can acknowledge. As noted elsewhere, Feliciano has been and looks to be money down a well. Burnett drew $16.5 million and pitched like Pelfrey. Was that enough to sink the Yankees? Not quite, but it sure helped. I've got to look for more of that. Money the Yankees don't spend on Sabathia will only go toward another top flight pitcher who may be a better investment. The beast is going to eat. Are we there yet? Well, I'm watching a Yankee-free World Series right now. That's always nice.
  3. I understand the sentiment of the last sentence of that post. But I expect the best way to that end might be letting the Yankees tack on another 30-40% of that contract to retain him, and then watching Sabathia's career --- like Sabathia's body --- go all pear shaped.
  4. Tim Spooneybarger is a guy I never think about, except when I walk past a Booeymonger.
  5. Here you go: http://www.walb.com/story/1016256/braves-get-hampton-from-marlins?redirected=true
  6. Curves are typically in the high seventies. Yes, I know hampton never played for the Malins. I thought that was one of your criteria.
  7. I figure that was all required. The list of guys they need to add to the 40-man has to begin with Lagares, right? He may be a fringey prospect merely faking it in centerfield, but he's destroying AFL pitching right now --- and this would be the third straight league that has become his plaything.
  8. Yeah, any tears for Cashman end just about the time he decided to blame the Mets for doing what everybody knew had been done at the time the Yankees decided to outbid the field and sign away our pitcher. Caveat Yanquior!
  9. At 63? and 200 lbs. Fulmer has good size, and has gained anywhere from 5-7 mph on his fastball in the last calendar year, while growing an inch in height and putting on about 20 lbs. His heater is now in the mid 90?s with his fastball topping out at 97. He has a very promising secondary pitch he is now throwing at 83-85 mph, that is thrown with a tight rotation and comes in with a sharp downward break. The most impressive thing about his breaking pitch, is he can throw it for strikes, which makes it a potentially devastating out-pitch. His change-up, like most high school pitchers, is a work-in-progress at this time, and will be something he must refine to find success as a starter beyond the lowest levels of the minors. He has shown good stamina on the mound, and should develop into a pitcher who can throw deep into games. Why are they trying so hard to avoid the word "curve"?
  10. The Marlins paid something like $30 million to Mike Hampton, right?
  11. I would discourage any Canadian in Cuba from making inquiries about their ballplayers.
  12. I think the formula was that you could count on 60% of the box office of the prior film. But Superman Returns grossed something like $400 million, and yet they pulled the plug on the franchise. You can't make a sequel to that for under $240 million? Who are you? James Cameron?
  13. One of those things frequently lamented is the ongoing and seemingly everlasting leaking of new information about injury assessments and reasonable expectations and you start to wonder what's wrong with the Mets when a guy goes on the DL and soreness turns into strains, strains into sprains, bruises into fractures, rest into rehab, rehab into surgery, and you just wonder what the hell could be going wrong that their diagnoses and plans need to be continually (and negatively) reassessed. It's certainly with no degree of satisfaction that I read this recount of the Yankees' year with Pedro Dos, but maybe with an appreciation of the perspective it lends. Pedro, man, what a year.
  14. If I can make this an all-offseason action thread, the US ended 40 years of Cuban domination at the Pan-Am games, ending Cuba's run of 10 straight titles by beating them 12-10 in Monday's semifinals. And then promptly lost to Canada 2-1 in the final yesterday. Ernie Whitt managed the Canadians. And it was the fourth straight silver for the US. Met farmhand Jonathan Malo played shortstop for Canada. Former Met prospect Shawn Bowman also appeared for the Maple Leafs. No Mets played for the US.
  15. Cal Forever: The Afterlife of the Ryans and the Koonces.
  16. Could they? I'd imagine the Mets would have the right to block that move also.
  17. This plan is a few weeks old, and it seems shockingly shortsighted by the Yankees. What a miserable year its going to be for the AAA Yanks. Is it some kind of design to make them all hate the Mets. Why the heck can't they play at Penn State (Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, capacity 5406) or something?
  18. 19. This is Manny. He drives a Scion xB --- a car, I can tell you from experience, has about as much clearance as a dachshund. Seriously, don't run over any acorns. But Manny likes to represent. iVNqRTFCUvU The winning touch, I think, is the Rey Rey Ordez batting practice jersey beer holder that he's repurposed as a shifter grip. Good show, but still not for me. What's more my speed? Steve's '88 Celica, for starters. I'm sorry, it's an '88 Celica Turbo, the automotive equivelant of Kevin McReynolds.
  20. Every Sylvester Stallone movie anyhow. But some of them are built as the establishment of a series, with 75% of the content laid out as exposition, and the actors signed to three-picture deals and such. Many of them are even bankrolled with the idea that if they over-invest in the first film, they'll make up for it in the subsequent ones. And that's particularly sad, wasting all your jizz looking to the future, and not caring as much about the bird in hand.
  21. metirish wrote: That Oswalt trade didn't work out for the Phillies I guess, IIRC they gave up a few good to very good prospects and Happ? I don't know. I'm a fan of Happ, but the Oswalt trade sure looked good in 2010.
  22. Dave Eiland washes ashore with the Royals.
  23. Boy did I drop this thread. YOU ALL DIDN'T HELP!
  24. Theo Epstein as his introductory press conference. "It truly is an honor in a privilege to join such a special organization. To me, baseball is better with tradition. Baseball is better is with history. Baseball is better with fans who care. Baseball is better in ballparks like this. Baseball is better during the day. And baseball, best of all, is better when you win. And that, ultimately, is why I'm here today." Cub fans must be plotzing.
  25. It seems to be the other tiresome trend in TV. Sexy, stylish and morally ambiguous times in the sexy, stylish, morally ambiguous early-mid sixties. Women are exploited as mere sex things, but they push back within the narrow confines they are permitted to exist in. This makes them sexier and more exploitable. Tune in! They shouldn't have torn down Shea, but rather brought it back to it's early look and rented it out as a filming location. The mania for Mad Men fashionability recent led Target to re-launch a line of classic Missoni post-war looks on the middle class, segments of whom, you may or may not have noticed, have gone nuts and stormed the stores (and crashed the website). They've bought the stores out of --- and please feel free to disagree --- some questionable fashion choices.
