  1. Butch Metzger was born to be a Met. Or named to be one, anyhow.
  2. Ryan's mad, son.
  3. Sources have Papelbon signing with Phillie, pending the physical.
  4. New Angel GM Jerry DiPoto and his angelic wife Tamie, with daughters Taylor, left, and Jordan, and son Jonah, at right Taylor's first word: "Nolan" Jonah's middle name: "Seaver"
  5. Agreed. But maybe they made the old pre-emptive offer, and that three-year stuff was crap. And maybe he does want to be a Marlin --- live in a Dominican clime and such. Maybe.
  6. A Marlins source returning from the Cespedes workout relayed to Marlins broadcaster that Reyes is "almost a done deal."
  7. For 9.99 total? I'm pretty sure Hudgens already beat us to it.
  8. Come on, folks. I'm in for $5. I mean, yeah, there's little reason I should be getting gifts for people wealthier than me who don't know me. But I admit it: I'm lured irresistibly to the glamour. And there's no glamour that's so alluring to me AAAA glamour. Someday, probably on a particularly tough day, I'll be digging a ditch, fighting with people who love me, maybe suffering from a nasty skin irritation, and a beatific smile will cross my face. The guy next to me in the ditch will wipe his brow, snort, and ask me, "What the hell are you smiling at?" I'll shrug, turn over another shovelful of earth and reply, "Maybe he's giving her a smoothie from my blender right now."

  13. I've tended to think that MLB had a Blackwater-type security firm looking after the players during the winter league season, and that the the real vulnerability has been during the MLB season to players' extended families or to former players. Yup. Bud's got his own muscle: The Department of Investigations, or DOI, was created at the recommendation of George Mitchell and his Mitchell Report of Dec. 2007. A month later, commissioner Bud Selig announced the formation of the DOI and installed former New York policeman Dan Mullin as its head. Mullin is the cousin of NBA Hall of Famer Chris Mullin. The DOI has full-time agents in place in the Dominican Republic and Venezuela, just as it does in the United States. The agency worked closely with Venezuelan officials during the separate 2009 kidnappings of Victor Zambranos mother and Yorvit Torrealbas(notes) son, and routinely monitors the day-to-day security concerns in those nations. A baseball source said Thursday morning that Ramos would be best served if the league said little on the very delicate matter. MLB's vice president and DOI head Dan Mullin.

  16. As I said, me too.
  17. Don't you have to release a player and expose him to waivers in order to remove him from the 40 man roster? No. If not, what is the process? Exposing a player to waivers is not the same as releasing him. The article says he has been removed from the 40 man, so your roster should not have him on it. I was providing you the information so you could update it. I know. You've done it over and over. For years. it's petty and tiresome. My favorite was when there was a transaction that hadn't taken place yet but you just had to feel that power so you went and announced that it was going to take place and you wanted to help me find the thread for when it happened. Come on. I'm not your puppet. 18. Removed from the roster isn't the same as being released.
  19. How about you stop being circumspect?
  20. Me too. But even if you don't have all that going for you, you can watch the video of that play over and over and Mookie's head appears rounding first so fast that you tend to believe Buckner wouldn't have made that play at all. The Mets had the momentum, and the Mookie, and the Sox were playing on their heels and the Mets on their toes. Also underplayed: the heroism of Mookie fouling those pitches off. I'd watched Mookie enough to know that staying alive with two strikes wasn't a typical part of his game.
  21. Steve, you got a blanket point you're trying to make about everybody but you?
  22. Bat head. Keeping the bat head back. Yeah.
  23. To grossly generalize, I'm really kind of frustrated with the amount of moving parts in the batting and pitching motions that veteran Japanese players arrive here with, hurting them with regards to making adjustments. I like that he ---- like Ichiro, KMatsui, and Shinjo --- is so adept at keeping the [crossout:27jeg8gp]back[/crossout:27jeg8gp] bat head back until late, but for Matsui, that just meant more bouncers to short.
