Howie-like (genuine) or Leiter-like (when the MFYs or Phillies weren't on)? It's an open question, but that comment about WFAN gives me pause.

  3. Gwreck wrote: Ceetar wrote: "It's a lock for the Mets to finish last" comments out there are dumb things to say. I'd agree to this. It's not a lock. That being said, it's far more likely that the Mets finish in last than that they make the playoffs, and it would be dumb to suggest otherwise. I'm seriously suggesting it.
  4. Starting pitching prospects coming along fast is like the fourth KEY TO THE SEASON: 1) Johan Santana being a good starting pitcher, if not an excellent one. 2) Jason Bay being Jason Bay, instead of a drain in the middle of our lineup. 3) General improvement in health. 4) A starting pitching prospect or two coming along. In general, I love the O. It doesn't have a leadoff hitter, but it's versatility is enviable. The defense? Well, replacing Ken Oberkfell with Tim Teufel is pro-active, but it doesn't knock my socks off. Still, I have no problem believing, and no problem with Sandy celebrating the chance to find reinvigorated health. If Ike Davis isn't lying to us about the state of his ankle, he has a chance to redecorate the park. And hey, check out the five more homers Lucas Duda might've hit if CitiField had this year's dimensions last year.
  5. I believe the Mets will be better in 2012 than they were in 2011.
  6. I wouldn't short-sell the Pirates so.
  7. I don't know about adding the most --- Washington is adding that Strassberg guy under the same logic --- but that's the tune I'm dancing to. It ignores, of course, that a lot of those guys were available to the team for much of last season, and that they have to be measured against the losses of the partial seasons of Reyes and Beltran and Rodriguez and Capuano. I'm still dancing.
  8. How about this one: As my wife beings home a DVD of the already-seen Moneyball --- wanting to again delight, along with countless filmgoing indifferent baseball fans, in how Billy Beane stuck it to the mythmongering scouting industry by instead building his team scientifically through objective data rather than subjective guesswork... Billy Beane makes perhaps his riskiest move ever based mostly on... scouting!
  9. It happens sometimes. Happened with Tejada, for instance. Nobody gets buried on the bench anymore. There's plenty of PT for everybody. They could call him up to replace some backup to Torres, but give him a chance to steal Torres' job. Trying to give prospects a chance to play every day is a useful value, but it's not so pre-eminent as all that.
  10. Torres may not but his backup might.
  11. I'm certainly not arguing for Niuewy, but I also see no reason why he couldn't come up in six weeks if the more veteran guys weren't doing the job and he was.
  12. There's also Adam Loewen and Kirk Nieuwenhuis competing for that role, or at least the role of outstanding compound vowel Met.
  13. "Last tweet, folks. Jeffy just told me to cut it da fuk out. #fucktheman"
  14. Keh could do a better job underscoring the wins, though. He mentions those guys in passing, but now as wins.
  15. I think they have a star witness, and if she's got the paper to back herself up, the trustee's case is strengthened. I've been dubious that they could meet the burden of proof. "Knew or should have known"? Well all the investors that Picard represents knew or should have known. But the reports of earnings dazzled them to the point where their wisdom failed them. THAT'S THE SCAM. The Wilkatzes fell for it. Everybody fell for it. Shame on them all, but that's human frailty right there, not criminal negligence or deceit. And then I read this report and... well I'm not so much seeing it that way right now.

  17. The good news, I guess, is that minor league ball is slowly returning to Canada.
  18. It's a lot of things. But it's not irrelevant.
  19. Amazin' Avenue has Jean Shepherd on the Mets and the banners. I can't afford the time to listen now, but def later.
  20. I liked Bingo when I visited, just in the sense of the-town-is-dead-thank-God-we-at-least-have-a-ballclub sense. I think they would make a great indy league town. I think everybody would.
  21. I just love the account of the patronizing backslapping dude-on-dude environment she must swim in every day, making fools out of a bunch of jockstraps. Which is to say, yeah, she could prove very damaging.
  22. "You don't get it, do you? This is a privilege. You don't get to ask questions. This tack has has always worked for me with the chicks.
  23. It's all very complex. If a team doesn't hold the contract on any players or staff, and it doesn't own the stadium, and its lease on the stadium is up, and its affiliation with the parent club is up, just what is it you're purchasing when you buy? A license to compete in the Eastern League?
  24. Rob Carson is following me? Really? Knock yourself out, kid.
