Both teams have being emptying the bench. Cory Vaughn's in the house. Darrell Cecliani. Tovar's back. Some guy named Richard Lucas has taken over first base for Ike. We are the Lucasiest team in the business, you know that?
Oh, and with both teams fielding cromulent squads, the Mets led 3-1 on an Ike Davis homer in the third. Dillon Gee has held the mighty Bombers to a single run through five, on four hits, one walk, and five strikeouts. Sign him to an extension.
Because that's what always happens. Sew dissent and use arbitrary cultural identifiers to break down solidarity. It's in the textbook. Anti-Union Tactics 101. No Latino will sign a card without having to wrestle with the unstated but still strongly implied (and perhaps very real) threat that he will lose his livelihood and his residency. I don't think it will happen. I know it will. For I have seen the future.
I do know what would happen if minor leaguers began organizing: threats, intimidation, assertions that the industry couldn't possibly survive, players derided as cynical and greedy with no regards for the sport, and Latinos pitted against US-born players. The MLBPA would respond with quiet complicity while scheming in the background how to take over this new union's business once all their heavy lifting had brought the organizing to a tipping point.
