  1. Five-zip and still rallying in the third. The Yanks may not have sent much of a big-league team to face the Mets, but they did send a big-league pitcher in Nova, and the Mets are sending him to an early shower.
  2. Vic Sage wrote: hoping a man prospers is also not the same as expecting him to prosper. Which doesn't characterize what I wrote.
  3. I missed the fantasizing part.
  4. My Dad remembered this game. I used to pepper him all the time with dumb philosophical questions about baseball. "Could three teams play a baseball game against each other?" "Well, there was this one time...."
  5. You were expecting a last-minute pickup of somebody?
  6. Two different beat men report getting on the wrong side of Frank Francisco today. Mikey Puma wrote: Frank Francisco (who isn't headed to DL) just chastised me for laughing after he declared: "We will win a lot of ... David Lennon wrote: Francisco asked how his bullpen looked. I replied, "Good." He stared at me and said, "It was great."
  7. So, it looks like Byrdak and Torres are going to be ready for opening day, if not as ready to go as some others. That leaves us with, after all that drama, only two guys likely for the DL at the start of the season --- Beato and Mejia, and Mejia we knew about coming in. We also need to clear two spots on the roster. I wonder if they can do one by putting Jenrry on the 60-day DL. 9. You've got to make COLA calculations, but yeah, it's been a bomb thus far. But you've got to weigh the contracts of guys generally performing poorly also against those of guys generally performing well, but too frequently hurt --- Pedro Martinez and Johan Santana, f'rinstance --- and look at their relative return on investment. It's a depressing exercise, I warn you. It's opening day coming, after all.
  10. I don't really want to come across as unreasonable, because I love you and I hope for your happiness. I long for it. But if you're going to take some time to write, to pass on information without attribution --- essentially backing it with no authority but your own --- you can and should take the time to fact-check. And in fairness, no baseball fan or educated American of any depth should have to take much more than a moment's reflection to recall that (1) the Yankees won a pile of championships in the 1950s, (2) the president then was Dwight D. Eisenhower, and (3) Ike was a Republican. Twitter is making us insane.
  11. Hmmmm... Anybody else?
  12. If a psychological barrier is the issue, I imagine it is lessened due to the fact that the contract is not on this regime's ledger. I don't think it's worth their consideration until it's clear that they have 25 guys better/more useful than him and the pattern suggests it's going to stay that way.
  13. Ceetar wrote: Edgy DC wrote: sharpie wrote: Yankees won plenty of times with Eisenhower in office. Witnesses say Ike was always standing at the time. Lol. well, it's a Yankee story so I didn't care enough to fact check. It's amazing how much incorrect info gets around. Apparently it's something like the last 8 or so titles, and it may have been prompted by an op-ed in the Times by Ari Fletcher. It gets around because we don't care enough to fact check.

  16. Definitely. Red hot groupie action.
  17. In the end, though, it's not that surprising. Secondary colors are frequently the ideal complement to the primary color, or it's numerical opposite. Spring training unis generally graduate secondary colors to the primary position and... voila. Not far off from some of the misbegotten spring getups of years past.
  18. I wasn't likening them. Only saying that a contract like that moves the whole marketplace. And decisions on Wright are more pending, though not as pending as the current buzz might suggest.
  19. Marlins in Negativeland.
  20. Frayed Knot wrote: Nice target for Ike to shoot at. Sugarpants comes first, though. I don't reckon the recession is like to come to baseball as long as they have a legal monopoly.
  21. Ten years, $225 million dollars. Contract like that deserves it's own thread. Yikey. You can buy a chunk of the Mets with money like that. Get your own business cards and a piece of Mr. Met and everything.
  22. I can't imagine why they wouldn't. Go, Puma.
  23. According to several sources, Frank Francisco was to have an MRI this afternoon, despite his insistence that his right knee felt fine subsequent to a draining.
  24. It's an interesting challenge to Pelfrey too.
  25. Big rally with small sticks. Even Ramon Ramirez picks up a ribbie. Eight-one, guys-wearing-Met-uniforms lead.
