  1. Thole's arm is our salvation tonight.
  2. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: I'd be a little more confident in our chances, I think, if we had a skipper who were less panicky than I am. Alas. (And now we've got 6 innings to fill with that wonderful, wonderful 'pen.) I'm OK with the bailout as long as they use the long man as a long man and are committed to try and get three innings (or more!) out of him.
  3. I keep hearing about Brian Bogusevic and thinking he must be the son of former Cosmos star Vladislav Bogi?evi?, but no. Mike Nickeas remains the only NASL offspring in the park.
  4. Tying run, up, babies.
  5. I'll say it Howie. I'm OK with the hill staying in centerfield into perpetuity.
  6. Steve, considering how high the stakes and tensions have risen, instead of gently and jokingly playing the part of unwelcoming asshole, I'd cut right past that and play the part of welcoming prince. Seriously: "You must be from Atlanta! Welcome to New York! Are you having a good time?! I hope everybody's been hospitable! My name's Steve and I just want you to know that... Wait, let me get that cotton candy! No, I insist! Folks do no less for me when I'm down in Georgia!"
  7. I'm Justin Turner. It hasn't been worth their while to start me for nine days, and now I'm suddenly the number-three hitter. How do you do?

Did Megdal copy my post again -- 11 minutes ago? By the way, you ever invite Howard to post here?
  9. Well, there's the sample size thing. It's early.
  10. So, the Mets are home on Friday night. Should they hoist the 2000 championship flag then or wait until the Sunday matinee?
  11. Andy Pettitte: American. (Of course, he's helping Roger set up his steroids-didn't-make-me-great-I-just-used-them-as-medicine-the-way-you-or-I-would-use-an-aspirin-so-we-could-go-to-work-and-feed-our-kids defense.)
  12. The Mets' minor league affiliates are a collective 60-36 --- best winning percentage of any organization (.625).
  13. Looking worse than I expected.
  14. > "Hey, kid! Pack your stuff! You've been called up to the bigs." > "Holy crap! YEAH! I'm finally gonna..." > "Oh, and it's Gay Cowboy Day or something. Go talk to the clubby. He has your pink chaps."
  15. Scott Hairston's cycle hopefully put the 2011 interstate comfortably behind him. He's at .244 and presumably didn't use up all his awesomeness in one game. A trip through Colorado and Houston may mean Hitsvile USA for some, but for Mike Nickeas, it's been Pukesville. A lousy time for a hitter to be out of commission, and his average sits at .188. A hit his next time up gets him up to an even .200. Ike Davis has been really getting it together of late and stringing together two-hit games. He's up .185 after bottoming out somewhere gross (around .126, I think). Hits in his next two at-bats will deliver him from the endless asphalt. Andres Torres, welcome back... to your nightmare. Somebody else has been doing your job and doing it well, while you have a batting average starting with a one. Six at-bats aren't much of a sample size, so get a knock your next time up, raise your average to a perfectly sing-songy .286, and we aren't having this conversation. And hey, 2-7 is exactly the goal we're looking to reach for the currently 0-5 Jordany Valdespin. That's two hits, JV! Or else it's back to the JV! Speaking of which, Zack Lutz headed back to Buffalo with a .125 average. One-for-one gets you out of the Club of Shame, Zack. Get back soon and straighten that mess out. That's within reach for all y'all.
  16. You're a 12-year veteran with a $30 million salary and a one-way ticket to the Hall of Fame. The hitting coach shouldn't even be bothering you. And if you're slumping and actually want to talk to him and his advice isn't working, any hitting coach in the country would be happy to do some private consulting free of charge. It's your slump, Albert. Own it.
  17. Duda still looks uncomfortable.
  18. Marlins home attendance, April 2011: 17,694.
  19. You're risking augmenting the sample size to a volume approaching a dangerous state of actual relevancy.
  20. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Justin Turner... June 2011? Wow. First guess. May 2011, but close enough for me. I would have guessed Jae Weong Seo. It would be fun if they qualified the term "rookie" for the purposes of that award, to mean, rather than players who have garnered no more than X appearances prior to that season, but players who have garnered no more than X appearances prior to that month. So as you can only qualify for and win the Rookie of the Year award in one season, so you could only qualify for and win the Rookie of the Month award in a single month. They'd have some spectacularly obscure winners.
  21. Kirk Niuwenhuis has a damn good chance to win the coveted National League Rookie of the Month Award. OK, it's not very coveted... or even... known, but it's apparently been around for 11 years, but has decorated the rsum of only one Met. Name that lone Met who Kirk may perhaps join. Bonus points for naming the month and year.
  22. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Mike Baxter's total of 0.02 points averaged down to zero, so he does not appear in the results. Yeah, but GOD knows.
  23. Looks like we have a team that can beat any team in the league if they make their plays and avoid errors and base-running mistakes and such, and can lose to any team in the league if they don't. And they look like they're going to be challenged for the time being to avoid such mistakes. 1) I'm still trying to wrap my head around the notion of a poor infielder like Teufel hired to be the infield coach. I realize history is filled with poor pitchers and poor hitters going on to do an excellent job as coaches. I guess I have to decide whether I believe Teufel lacked any skill whatsoever and filled in the gap with knowledge or lacked knowledge as well. I don't know, but he did set a record for the fewest doubleplays by a secondbaseman with over 145 games, or something. 2) When you're 6-for-12 in stolen bases, stop running. (I would have guessed they were more like 3-for-18.) Anyhow, Tim Teufel and Tom Goodwin: I'm countin' on you; you can carry me through.
