  1. I spoke to Ronny and he's OK with that.
  2. Called up for a one-start tryout Made it to the airport in time to fly out Pitched against Houston, made them look futile But the pen took over and our pen is bru-tile And the skip said, "McHugh, well send you back down unda Where the bats can hit and the gloves dont blunda You've some lightning heat; you got a curve like thunda If you dont come back, youre gonna be a one game wonda." Checking in back in Buflo Up come Zack Lutz, Oswaldo Navarro They asked, "Is Sandy a man which Rewards a shutout with a demotion sandwich?" And I said, "No! Said they just had to send me back down unda Said they needed Schwinie for a start on Sunda My career ain't been torn asunda Though come September I might start to wonda." Next start in Triple-A Five frames and gone, just a short day I said to Wally, "Are you trying to screw me? Because our pen gives no confidence to me?" And he said, "FUCK! Welcome back to the team down unda! Where we FUCKing suck too much to wear a Mets numba! FUCK! FUCK! FUCK! FUCK! Weve been sucky all summa! And if you dont like it, you can give me a humma!" Yeah! Pitchin' for a team down unda Where the women flirt if they think youre a comer You get booed by an underpaid plumba Please call me back at the end of the summa! Pitchin' for a team down unda Where the women flirt if they think youre a comer You get booed by an underpaid plumba Please call me back at the end of the summa!
  3. Zero in 1980. John Stearns hurt his elbow, and only got a half year in, and in the games he did get into, he didn't get any loft on the ball. Alex Trevio, Ron Hodges, and Butch Benton, given a chance to pick him up, didn't. All that would have been awful on it's own, but what really sealed it was that they didn't get any homers from any of their shorstops or secondbasemen that year either. They totaled a Marisesque 61 --- almost all of those coming from the outfield.
  4. Homers by a Mets Catcher, 2012 1) Kelly Shoppach: 2 2) Mike Nickeas: 1 3) Josh Thole: 1 4) Rob Johnson: 0
  5. Six shutty outy innings from the bullpen. Just got to get them a nice hole to pitch out of. That's when they're at their best.
  6. Brown back in the lineup tonight.
  7. Really, if I was a mind to view this trade with covetousness, I'd be jealous of the Sox fans, not those of the Dodgers. Their GM really made a name for himself here, packaging contracts people might want (Gonzalez) with those that are less attractive (Crawford, Lester). A the deadline, the Mets had one of the most attractive contracts in baseball (Dickey) and one of the least (Bay). Could the team have found a way to stitch them together and make a team take both in a deal? I'm not advocating, but if wheeling and dealing gives you a good feeling, that's the sort of play that might have worked strategically.
  8. This is way too complicated. The Mets lack production. The place they could probably use more of it is in the outfield, particularly left, where it's lack has been most acute.
  9. Great artwork doesn't need a reason. It just is.
  10. The battle for third is serious.
  11. Brown's missed the last two games with a sore left knee. More importantly, Calos Ruiz remains on the shelf with a strained oblique and (more importantly) a foot injury. Considering how their whole lineup got old all at once, and they're far from the race, they're in no hurry to rush their All-Star catcher back. Catching and hitting well is a guy named Erik Kratz. He's got a rep as an instigator and wears number 31. Unclear whether that's a Mike Piazza tribute.
  12. They've made pretty clear that they intend to go after Wright and Dickey this off-season. I went down this road with Ashie, but I think you one place too much stock in the notion that a player won't sign a big contract because he isn't seeing other money being thrown around.
  13. Los Angeles Red Sox, Big Shot Boston Dudes from the Last Decade Who Ended up in Dodger Blue: Nomar Garciaparra Shea Hillenbrand Grady Little Mark Loretta Derek Lowe Doug Mienkewicz Mill Mueller Manny Ramirez David Wells and now... Josh Beckett Carl Crawford Adrian Gonzalez Nick Punto
  14. I'd say that, of the first fifty Mets I every pulled out of a pack of baseball cards, I got 15 Harry Parkers and 15 George Stones --- Mets virtually unknown to me except that they had square names that made them sound like senior citizens. How I resented them. Years later, I looked at the yearbooks and realized 1973 wouldn't have happened without the two of them, and I made them retroactive favorites. Can you do that? I mean, I was a kid.
  15. Harry wasn't a bad pitcher. At least, he certainly wasn't in 1973, and that's as good a time as any and a better time than most to have your best season. It'd be a shame if his time passed unmarked.
  16. Welcome back, Mex. The distinction between the Mets and Dodgers that I recall being made by MLB is that the Mets re-invested money liberally into the team while the Dodgers' owners pocketed revenue. At any rate, I'm certainly not asking the Mets to behave like the Dodgers.
  17. I think that's certainly true. I think the downside of that is times like this, when a team is struggling to find answers and the front office is --- as per their plan --- silent. Such times are when a manager can show his quality --- staving off a morale crisis by keeping the parts moving, and keeping guys on task and focused, even when success is completely elusive.
  18. There have been too many times in my life where, if I was a betting man, I wouldn't have bet on myself. But I just spent 3 of the best/craziest/most exhilarating days of my life pitching for the New York Mets. Which just goes to show you, betting against anyone in this game is the real gamble. All that and more at A Day Older, A Day Wiser.

  21. Are Murphy and Tejada refusing to play ball? What exactly is Collins saying?
  22. Defensive replacement does his job and it don't matter where he hits. That gif ceetar posted looks like Davis brought his fists down on top of Murphy's head and the plate was too crowded for Murph to get out of the way.
