  1. The Marlins didn't have so bleak a short-term future as the Mets did when Reyes jumped. Except it was. It's real easy for rich men to bullshit about the future they are building.
  2. I think selling a vision of the future is probably easier than most sells. You offer me a guaranteed $30 million salary for eight years, I'm more than happy to believe that there will be ice skating on the moon.
  3. Maybe, I guess, and then Daniel Murphy becomes the anchor of your 2013 marketing campaign and you draw 3,643 fans to see you. I'm pretty sure that they'll go whole hog into re-signing both. If they fail, they'd sooner trade Dickey, hope they can get some big league-ready pieces, go into the season optimistic-if-things-break-right-they-can-contend, and trade Wright if he still remains unsigned near the deadline. But I'm pretty sure that they'll go whole hog into re-signing both.
  4. I think it's more than a little deceptive if you only count money awarded to free agents. Reyes may seem to be worth every penny he gets by that measure, but not necessarily when you see the productivity one can get out of a pre-arbitration player like Ruben Tejada for pennies on the dollar. Seawolf is arguing $40 million.
  5. What specifically about their articles do you object to?
  6. A Boy Named Seo wrote: metirish wrote: This type of thing doesn't meche with athletes that have guaranteed contracts . Well played. Totally missed that. I was thinking, "There's another Cranepoolio descending into homonym spelling. Very nice post indeed that draws ABN Seo out of exile.
  7. I always wonder what it does to a marriage between two actors when the crappy film they meet on becomes an embarrassing bomb that negatively affects their careers. Does it somehow doom the marriage (more than it already is, as a marriage between actors) to be associated with such a dog? Is their meetup story too embarrassing to speak of? They'd love to go on with the marriage and forget the film, but every article about them includes the phrase, "The couple, who met on the set of...." and so their relationship becomes for people a constant distasteful reminder of a movie they're desperately trying to put behind them.
  8. Young 4.91 ERamirez 1.97 RRamirez 1.86 Wright 1.26
  9. You'd be undermining your baseball-playing colleagues who would be pressured to do what the then-ascending more would suggest was the right thing if they didn't have a season that justifies their contracts. It's not like anybody insists teams have a moral obligation to pay the Mike Trouts of the world (or even the Jerry Hairstons) more when they outperform their salaries. If Jason Bay has qualms about the money he's earning (or failing to earn, but receiving anyhow), he could re-direct it to charity (I could suggest a few), but I'd hate to see it sent back to the Wilpons. Why should they or any owner be protected from risk?

  11. Back with the two dollar words. As for his summary of the season, he added: "Life doesn't always agree with your vision for it. Maybe never. Maybe rarely. In this particular year, it has superseded any expectation that I had. I certainly have a big imagination, and I dream big. But I couldn't even dream this narrative up. It's really kind of supernatural for me, and I'm just trying to be in the moment with it and really enjoy it, because I've also been on the other side of the coin. I got picked up off the scrap heap. So I've been there, too. I've been part of the scrap heap, too. That gives me a very unique perspective."
  12. Budda piitcher was a righty. They sent up another lefty for him --- a .150-hitting one.
  13. Why didn't Duda bat in the top of the ninth?
  14. Niese 3.07 Duda 3.02 Murphy 1.05 Parnell 0.87 Hampson 0.67 Davis 0.49 Valdespin 0.40 Acosta 0.37 Torres 0.05 Bay 0.02
  15. Niese, Duda, and Parnell. Really nice win if you want to believe the Mets have a future.
  16. Really nice to see Parnell come upstairs with two strikes. More importantly, it's really nice to see him do it successfully.
  17. Crying at the plate: Thinking about the quality of the surf: Carrying a hammer in his back pocket: Student of engineering: Looking for a whiffleball game: Throws like a girl: Thanks for giving us a dazzling action shot, you lazy shit:
  18. Wow, Terry's going to play matchups all the way home.
  19. Chipper, cut that shit out. Oh, now I get Brad Benson, that card.
  20. Josh Lewin is giving an assist to Dickey for kerfuffling their timing with the flutterball. Not a stretch of a case to make, I would guess.
  21. Great play, Wright. Down side of the Mets taking a seventh-inning lead is that Jones is now set up to become a late-inning hero on his own night.
  22. Substituting for Edgy because he hasn't started the Chipper Jones Night thread, presumably out of sadness for the loss of a great opponent (uh-huh). Sorry, but I was on the road. Wife DC: What did you say you needed a smart phone for? Edgy: I need to start In-Game Threads from the road. Wifey: Ummm...

  24. Come on, Dudy. Be my friend.
  25. Hairston, man, just make contact. Boo.
