  1. Vic is apparently very big on that pulse quality.
  2. Wonder how many other restaurants served their last meal this week. They may have gotten out while the gettin' was good.
  3. The Mets now have two alums from Avernia University on their 40-man roster ---- Recker and Zach Lutz.
  4. Also this day, Randy Jones' impressive innings load (or, more likely a one-point victory in the win column) helps him edge out not one, not two, but three superlative seasons from Met starters in garnering perhaps the least strikey-outey Cy Young Award in baseball history. That sort of workload will damage a pitcher's future. But no worries, Padre fans, that ugly future would come with the Mets, while those other three guys continued to pile up wins
  5. November 2 is Millan Day, as the Mets in 1972 trade Danny Frisella and Gary Gentry for Felix Millan, George Stone, and his pretty wife Diane.

"Hey Mike, congratulations on the move. We can now crank up the volume and hear you snoring in hi-fidelity. No static at all, baby."
  7. I think that was a cat. His dog of that period was a poodle named Slider. He had a friend who was a failed pitcher and became a baseball writer instead --- O'Brien or somebody --- who told him if he had another dog named Curveball, he'd have won 400 games.
  8. While remembering Pascual's wonderful pitching and enigmatic and often self-defeating personality, we must pay tribute to his outstanding contributions he made to eighties pop-funk-soul outfit Cameo. RIP, Pascual.
  9. He's not that far from five-and-dime status, I guess.
  10. The Mets want to proceed expeditiously, but plan on keeping things private, with no information leaking out, says a well placed source with intimate knowledge of proceedings who asked to remain nameless. Nice.
  11. How has Nolan Ryan thus far resisted political office? He's perfect. He's famous, famously married, ambitious, Texan, and people are dying to give him money.
  12. I'd never in all my baseball loving days guess that anybody would get the jump on Pascual Perez. That guy was one scary mean pitcher. Volcanic temper too. Everything was cool and then BAM!, Pascual wanted to kill somebody and four guys would be holding him back. There were three Perez brothers in the big leagues --- the less ill-tempered (but still intimidating) Melido and Carlos joining Pascual. Yorkis was a cousin. There was a fourth brother, in the Mets system, named Vladimir. My boss at the time took a trip up to Little Falls to see the baby Mets play. I asked him how it went and he said it didn't go so good, as Vladimir started and got tossed in the second inning for headhunting. Pascual was also known for missing his first home start for the Braves after getting lost trying to find the ballpark, circling the city for hours. Don't know how angry Joe Torre got, but he started Pascual the next night against the Mets and he went 9 2/3 innings in the Braves' extra innng win.
  13. Yeah, well, all I care about is that they all collect true Yankee paychecks.
  14. Ah, don't indulge Yankee fatalism. It's not that guys in decline suddenly get good when the Yankees sign them (cough! Pedro Feliciano, cough!), but rather that they have the resources to quickly bury folks when they don't.
  15. Man, did Spike jump the shark halfway through his delivery of that line or what?
  16. Oh, I think a set-up man leaving $14 million on the table is a break for the Yankees. Is the difference between him and, say, Bobby Parnell that vast?
  17. Ooh, too tempting! Terms: For High School and College students only. Like they wouldn't be most prone to be mischievous.
  18. Ooh, too tempting!
  19. The engagement and perspective that only Twitter can give you.
  20. Rescheduled for November 26.
  21. If defensive metrics aren't winning your confidence regarding which guys are getting to balls that might elude other guys, they should be able to tell by now, with some accuracy, how effective an outfielder's arm is --- not only regarding the guys you nail but the guys you freeze because they'd never run on you. Jay Bruce, for instance, had eight assists, an unimpressive number. Is he chilling the opposition from taking the extra base or failing to nail them when they do? The truth is out there.
  22. smg58 wrote: Paulino minus steroids turned out to be overvalued (at least by the Mets), and calling Quintanilla undervalued would require believing he ever had value in the first place. If they're looking for a market inefficiency, that's a dead end. I don't think that's conclusive. Colorado, for instance, has done pretty well getting production out of post-disgrace Jason Giambi for pennies on the dollar.
  23. Great year with the glove for Wright, but Keith will be very happy to see Headley get his.
