1. Neither Francisco nor Looper really represented a lot of money, relatively. Billy Wagner, who had led the league in games finished in 2005, with a 1.51 ERA with 38 saves (and had 284 on his career), certainly represented elite. As additionally did Francisco Rodriguez, who had led the league in saves three of the previous four years, and had set the all-time record the previous year. I agree generally on not committing limited funds to the pen, but not with those characterizations.
2. Reported as a "bruised left knee."
3. No IGT today, but I fell asleep with a 4-0 lead and awoke to a 5-4 deficit (now 6-4). More importantly to this thread, Kirk Nieuwenhuis just got carted off after hurting his knee stealing second.
4. Yeah, the film does really well on Rotten Tomatoes. I'm guessing folks who like his act project the Q-rating he earned there onto his fictionalized self in this movie. Cuz independently, which is how I'm seeing this film, I'm not with him.
5. Damn shame if true --- and it sure seems to be, with the agent more or less copping on his behalf. Always seemed to be pretty attentive to his condition to me.
6. I think I know what you mean. That was a great exchange between Cohen and Hernandez on Hank Aaron and Ducky Medwick as instructors.
7. This has been an uninspiring page one.
8. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Mick Jones gets big gigs after Mets games. The Lou Gramm Band is playing honkey-tonks in Reno. And eating all the Foreigner drummers, looks like. That clip should seriously be the new RickRoll.
9. Two innings and two runs so far for R.A. One walk and no strikeouts.
10. Grounder-filled ninth for Parnell. David Wright traded to America after the game.
11. Mets making a middle inning statement against a fine Detroit squad, up 6-2 in the eighth. Former bison and cousin-of-Teo-tormenter Matt Tuiasosopo at first for Detroit.
12. Yabbut... he's gonna be a runaway train of productivity. And David Wright and Daniel Murphy will be on base for all his homers. Maybe Nieuwenhuis once or twice too! Sometime around week four, Kirk Gibson will walk him to instead pitch to Duda. Oh, mercy, will Kirk regret that.
13. Is the Fever thing done? I don't know, but I like to think he's negotiated with it and knows how to pace himself through the season. .286 / 41 / 124.
14. Standing up for bad hats.
15. If he isn't Johnny Bench, there's going to be a lynch mob after Sandy Alderson, isn't there?
16. Because rockin' out after a baseball game is baseball-related. Seger, I'm buying.
17. The Mets had an asset (curbside retail space), needed a tenant, the money was right, and they'll be gone by winter. Fiscal crisis makes for strange bedfellows.
18. And you're perfectly welcome to convene the committee and review the entries, my friend.
19. And nothing says that rumored Led Zeppelin reunion tour just ain't happenin' like Jason Bonham going on tour with bloody Foreigner for half a decade.
20. Selling a penny's worth of meat for a dollar to a monopolizingly captive marketplace, I would hope they make money hand over fist.
21. Yes, that's sort of exactly what I'm saying.
22. I see it the same but different. I think if he pitches as well as Feliciano, Felciiano gets it. Carson stares up as his autographed Bobby Myrick poster and waits for sporadic opportunities in between injuries to Feliciano, Byrdak, and Edgin. Fifteen games and 4.44 ERA. One or two big moments. Makes Utley look silly but maybe Howard makes him pay in July. Shortly after a big strikeout during a Sunday night game against Atlanta, he comes out as gay. Most Met brass and some teammates voice support but his opportunities don't exactly improve. John Franco says something dumb to the media which the Mets rush to disown, but it's clear that a fissure in the clubhouse is festering. And a fester is fissuring, the full extention of this won't be known until after the season. Michelle Obama gives him a celebrated call of support shortly after the season. His career beyond that is shrouded to me.
23. Well, the trick then would be for the actual musicians to tour, but I imagine the frontmen/brand owners have little great motivation to welcome back the old bandmates who bring relatively little brand association in exchange for the bigger paycheck. The friggen Eagles kicked out Don Felder after a million years as recently as 2002 when they decided he wasn't needed to sell the brand. "Let them eat residuals," says Don. The real retirement plan is to get your damn back catalog into car commercials or Joseph Gordon-Levitt movies.
24. It's definitely not spring training?
25. The Foreigner Crimeline: Boring but necessary factoid to know: The band chose the name "Foeigner" because the band had both multiple Brits and some Americans. Looks like it became the Mick and Lou Show pretty early on. I'm curious about that Jack Allen Smith era.
